Jason Momoa raves about Game of Thrones’ final season and Tom Wlaschiha “knows nothing” about it

khal

Jason Momoa is every bit as hyped for the Game of Thrones final season as we are. He returned from a set visit in Belfast with huge expectations and enthusiastic, albeit vague, praise. Conversely, Tom Wlaschiha admits total ignorance about season 8 but shared his thoughts on Arya’s character development.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jason Momoa said that the conclusion to Game of Thrones is “going to be the greatest thing that’s ever aired on TV. It’s going to be unbelievable. It’s going to f*** up a lot of people. And it was a bummer because I’m a huge fan and I didn’t want to know what’s going on. I was like, ‘Damn, I didn’t want to know that!”

To clarify, Momoa was only on set to catch up with his old cast mates, not to film a Gandalf-esque return for Khal Drogo. But Momoa seemed tickled by how Rises in the West theorists reacted to reports of his presence on set.

“I haven’t been over there in a long time,” he said. “You just want to see your friends and you end up make headlines going, ‘Drogo’s back!’ and I’m like, ‘He’s dead! He can’t come back, it wouldn’t work.’”

In the six seasons since Momoa left left the show, of course, many, many new actors have joined the cast and it was a treat for Momoa to finally get to chat with some of them.

“I’ve always wanted to meet Kristofer Hivju” Momoa said. “He’s just awesome.”

Though Momoa is far from bored these days, with his starring roles in the Netflix show, Frontier and the Justice League and Aquaman franchises, he admitted to feeling some envy watching the Dothraki in action in the Field of Fire battle in season 7.

“Seeing the Dothraki riding over the hill, going into battle surfing their horses, it was unbelievable. It was such a cool scene,” he said. “It’s also a bummer moment: Why couldn’t [Drogo] have died there! I could have died in battle. We never got to see Drogo going into battle.”

Tom Wlaschiha was recently in Singapore to celebrate HBO Asia’s 25th anniversary and spoke with a regional outlet about season 8.

“A man knows nothing,” he said … but then added that, “That’s my standard answer to (avoid giving away spoilers).”

He chatted about his perpetual amazement at getting recognized on the street by fans and briefly discussed Arya’s evolution, noting that she’s has lots of “different teacher characters and they’ve all been very important in making her what she is now.”

And then for the big fan question: who does he think will be seated on the Iron Throne at the end of season 8 episode 6?

“My personal theory is that no one will sit on the iron throne,” Wlaschiha said.

Stunning ‘Game of Thrones’ paper art released by Lovepop!

Caption

The Night King rides a resurrected Viserion in one of five deetailed pop-up cards released by paper company Lovepop.

The world of Game of Thrones is rich with detail, from the high-flying dragons to the elaborate costuming to the hundreds of blades that form the Iron Throne. Paper company Lovepop has recreated some of that detail with stunning handiwork, releasing a collection of their signature pop-up cards that depict Thrones characters and scenery.

The five cards include “Daenerys and Drogon,” “The Night King and Viserion,” “The Iron Throne,” “Weirwood” and “Euron’s Ship.” Lovepop creates the elements of these characters and scenery down to the smallest detail, including the red kraken’s eye on Euron’s menacing ship Silence to the leaves of the weirwood tree, Daenerys’ flowing blonde hair and the outlines of the melted swords that make up the Iron Throne. The inclusion of the Silence was a forgone conclusion for the company; both co-founders also are trained shipbuilders.

Euron Grejoy's ship Silence rides the waves of a Lovepop card, one of five released by the paper company.

Lovepop uses a form of origami known as kirigami, in which the paper is cut instead of merely folded. The result is a stunning 3-D creation rich with detail.

Game of Thrones Receives First Ever Grammy Nomination for Season 7 Score

Ramin Djawadi, Film Composer, Santa Monica, Calif. 6.21.10

Awards season is in full swing as we hurtle towards the end of 2017, preparing for the upcoming Golden Globes, Oscars, and, Grammys. While Game of Thrones is not exactly eligible for Oscar consideration, we know that HBO intends to submit Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke for lead acting nominations at the upcoming Golden Globes. Although we have no further word on other submittals, good news has begun to role in for GoT season 7, in its first of what we hope are many major award nominations. Not only that, but with the announcement of the 2018 Grammy Nominations, GoT can officially count itself a Grammy nominee!

Ramin Djawadi, who has been the sole composer of the iconic Game of Thrones score since day 1, is long overdue for a nomination, with the incredible work he’s done…but better late than never! Shockingly, Djawadi has only even been nominated for one Emmy, when in 2014 he was recognized for his work on season 4. It is truly a shame that the GoT theme, seemingly one of the most well-recognized theme songs in all of pop culture of the last 7 years (perhaps all time?) is no longer eligible. There are many excellent selections from the season 7 score, among which my favorites include ‘Dragonstone,’ ‘The Queen’s Justice,’ and ‘Ironborn.’

The full category title is: Best Score Soundtrack For Visual Media, which translates to:

“(Award to Composer(s) for an original score created specifically for, or as a companion to, a current legitimate motion picture, television show or series, video games or other visual media.)”

And with this, season 7 faces some tough competition, being the sole representative of the small screen going against three Oscar nominated movies, and an upcoming Oscar hopeful. Scores frequently make or break a movie for me, and I happen to have seen every other nominee in this category: Dunkirk (Hans Zimmer), La La Land (Justin Hurwitz), Arrival (Jóhann Jóhannsson), and Hidden Figures (Benjamin Wallfisch, Pharrell Williams & Hans Zimmer). All have exceptional scores befitting their film, and Djawadi faces some stiff competition from some pretty recognizable names. Zimmer, of The Dark Knight, Inception, and Pirates of the Caribbean fame (among many others) is nominated for two, and Hurwitz won the Oscar for La La Land earlier this year. Keep your fingers crossed for Game of Thrones!!!

Can’t get enough of [potential Grammy winner!] Ramin Djawadi? That’s what we’re here for. You can check WOTW’s own Petra’s excellent video essay on Djawadi’s use of leitmotifs, an episode of HBO’s Inside Game of Thrones devoted to Djawadi’s musical creation and evolutionary process, or you can hopefully check him out on tour at the 2nd Game of Thrones Live Concert Experience if you are lucky enough to be able to attend!

What’s your favorite selection from the season 7 score? How do you stack season 7 up against the other nominees? Let us know in the comments below!

A Song of Twists and Fate: the Little Moments that Changed Everything

707 - Dorne - Rhaegar, Lyanna 1

In Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire, we are accustomed with seeing enormous, flashy moments that drastically change the plot. Miracle dragons hatching from stone eggs, huge landslides from surprise attacks led by dead men, violent dinners, murderous weddings. However, these events are often the payoff for a meticulous and well-thought-out series of smaller but vital moments that lead logically to the headline moments. Today we’ll talk about a few more of these stepping stones that lead into the twist and turns we love.

Arguably the most important single event in the story is when Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark run away from their marriages together. Their actions start a war that topples the Targaryen dynasty and leads to a top-down reforming of the traditional power structures in Westeros, as well as the deaths of tens, maybe hundreds of thousands, and an untold amount of suffering. The two first met at the Tourney at Harrenhal and their paths converging there is built on coincidence and oddity. Long before that moment and even before his marriage to Elia Martell, the coincidences begin stacking up.

oberyn-1024

The first, and my favorite, is the story of Elia and her brother Oberyn Martell’s travels around Westeros looking for marriage alliances.

“Do you recall the tale I told you of our first meeting, Imp?” Prince Oberyn asked, as the Bastard of Godsgrace knelt before him to fasten his greaves. “It was not for your tail alone that my sister and I came to Casterly Rock. We were on a quest of sorts. A quest that took us to Starfall, the Arbor, Oldtown, the Shield Islands, Crakehall, and finally Casterly Rock . . . but our true destination was marriage. Doran was betrothed to Lady Mellario of Norvos, so he had been left behind as castellan of Sunspear. My sister and I were yet unpromised.

– A Storm of Swords, Tyrion X

The most promising suitor Elia met was the young, handsome, and of splendid repute heir to Oldtown, Baelor “Brightsmile” Hightower. After his introduction to Oberyn and Elia, Baelor received a very different nickname.

The only one who was even halfway presentable was young Baelor Hightower. A pretty lad, and my sister was half in love with him until he had the misfortune to fart once in our presence. I promptly named him Baelor Breakwind, and after that Elia couldn’t look at him without laughing.  – ASOS, Tyrion X

A fart derailed a union between Elia and Baelor and sent the two on their way. As Tyrion remarks to himself:

Had Elia wed him in place of Rhaegar Targaryen, she might be in Oldtown with her children growing tall around her. He wondered how many lives had been snuffed out by that fart.  – ASOS, Tyrion X

Imagine how much would’ve changed if young Baelor had held it in. Elia, from her reaction to him, may have ended up marrying and living in Oldtown for the rest of her life. Without Elia, Rhaegar marries someone else and could be less motivated to run with Lyanna. Also, Aerys has nothing to hold over Dorne and any rebellion against Aerys’ madness is probably far more successful. Aerys held Elia and her children hostages for the good behavior of Prince Llewyn Martell and the spears of Dorne. Without their support, the royal army likely folds against Robert and Ned’s forces. And even if Baelor wasn’t Elia and Oberyn’s first choice, he would’ve been an acceptable back up plan for the Martells’ first choice: Casterly Rock.

In their youth, the Princess of Dorne and Joanna Lannister were ladies in waiting to Queen Rhaella Targaryen, forging a close-knit friendship. After they left Rhaella’s service and began having their own children,  the friends tried like many do to get their children to marry and make their friends part of their family. The princess of Dorne had her two unmarried children, Oberyn and Elia. Joanna had two unmarried children, Jaime and Cersei. The marriage pacts for a joining of the Rock and Sunspear seemed ready-made. And we are told explicitly by Oberyn that was the plan :

Just so. It was my belief that the mothers had cooked up this plot between them. Squire Squishlips and his ilk and the various pimply young maidens who’d been paraded before me were the almonds before the feast, meant only to whet our appetites. The main course was to be served at Casterly Rock.”

“Cersei and Jaime.”

“Such a clever dwarf. Elia and I were older, to be sure. Your brother and sister could not have been more than eight or nine. Still, a difference of five or six years is little enough. And there was an empty cabin on our ship, a very nice cabin, such as might be kept for a person of high birth. As if it were intended that we take someone back to Sunspear. A young page, perhaps. Or a companion for Elia. Your lady mother meant to betroth Jaime to my sister, or Cersei to me. Perhaps both.”  – A Storm of Swords, Tyrion X

However, during the Martell siblings’ travels to Casterly Rock, Joanna Lannister unexpectedly dies and Lord Tywin has no intention on following through on the plan. Tywin has only one acceptable match in mind for his daughter Cersei: the crown prince Rhaegar.

When she was just a little girl, her father had promised her that she would marry Rhaegar. She could not have been more than six or seven. “Never speak of it, child,” he had told her, smiling his secret smile that only Cersei ever saw. “Not until His Grace agrees to the betrothal. It must remain our secret for now.” – A Feast for Crows, Cersei V

Again, one of these small footnotes in history that will be lost to time when people tell the tale of Rhaegar and his lady Lyanna. Joanna Lannister’s death blew up the carefully laid plans for the children of two old friends joining their houses and instead leads into the eventual marriage between Elia and Rhaegar. As with Baelor’s unfortunate rip, the death of Joanna continued the chain of events that lead towards the eventual doomed marriage of Rhaegar and Elia.

This didn’t just happen on Rhaegar’s side of R+L=J either. Lyanna has her own turning points in the narrative. Ned and Robert were best friends in a similar situation as Joanna and the Princess of Dorne, being raised in a lordly court. Robert and Ned hatched a scheme that they could finally become brothers if Robert married Ned’s little sister, a proposal that Lord Rickard Stark accepted against the wishes of his daughter.

“Robert will never keep to one bed,” Lyanna had told him at Winterfell, on the night long ago when their father had promised her hand to the young Lord of Storm’s End. “I hear he has gotten a child on some girl in the Vale.” Ned had held the babe in his arms; he could scarcely deny her, nor would he lie to his sister, but he had assured her that what Robert did before their betrothal was of no matter, that he was a good man and true who would love her with all his heart. Lyanna had only smiled. “Love is sweet, dearest Ned, but it cannot change a man’s nature.” – A Game of Thrones, Eddard IX

Had Ned spoken up for Lyanna, or if Rickard had consulted Lyanna on what she really thought of the impulsive stranger she was now betrothed to, her eventual flight could have been averted. Lyanna didn’t just run away with Rhaegar in love, she ran from the unhappy future Robert was offering. This situation falls squarely on Ned’s shoulders as he ignored all the warning signs for Robert and Lyanna’s betrothal because he was so excited that Robert would be joining his pack.

From Game of Thrones Season 6 Histories & Lore, “The Great Tourney at Harrenhal”

Another moment that history pivoted on was, of all people, the crannogman Howland Reed. Howland spent a year on the Isle of Faces next to Harrenhal communing with the Old Gods, and finally emerged for the great tourney held at the fortress. It was at this tournament Rhaegar and Lyanna met for the first time; however most forget that the chain of events that lead to their meeting started with the young Reed.

“Sometimes the knights are the monsters, Bran. The little crannogman was walking across the field, enjoying the warm spring day and harming none, when he was set upon by three squires. They were none older than fifteen, yet even so they were bigger than him, all three. This was their world, as they saw it, and he had no right to be there. They snatched away his spear and knocked him to the ground, cursing him for a frogeater.”

“None offered a name, but he marked their faces well so he could revenge himself upon them later. They shoved him down every time he tried to rise, and kicked him when he curled up on the ground. But then they heard a roar. ‘That’s my father’s man you’re kicking,’ howled the she-wolf.” A Storm of Swords, Bran II

To get revenge for Howland, it is widely thought Lyanna dressed up as the Knight of the Laughing Tree and entered the lists. This mystery knight aroused Mad King Aerys’ suspicions and he ordered his son to investigate. Rhaegar did as he was bid and discovered that beneath the armor was not Jaime Lannister, an enemy, or an ambitious squire but the she-wolf Lyanna Stark. None of that happens if Howland doesn’t walk in front of those three specific squires, a coincidence that makes some fans wonder if he did it intentionally. He specifically needed to be beaten up by squires in front of Lyanna Stark or else she never sees it happen and goes on with the Tourney and her life.

A last R+L=J turning point is Brandon Stark the Wild Wolf. After Rhaegar and Lyanna ran away together, a minor scandal turned into a war when somehow her brother Brandon is informed that Lyanna has been kidnapped.

“He was on his way to Riverrun when . . .” Strange, how telling it still made her throat grow tight, after all these years. “. . . when he heard about Lyanna, and went to King’s Landing instead. It was a rash thing to do.” She remembered how her own father had raged when the news had been brought to Riverrun. The gallant fool, was what he called Brandon.

Jaime poured the last half cup of wine. “He rode into the Red Keep with a few companions, shouting for Prince Rhaegar to come out and die. But Rhaegar wasn’t there. Aerys sent his guards to arrest them all for plotting his son’s murder. The others were lords’ sons too, it seems to me.” – A Clash of Kings, Catelyn VII

By threatening the crown prince’s life in front of his unstable and violent father, Brandon lit the fire that made the whole realm burn. King Aerys executed all of Brandon’s companions, save one, who were heirs and sons of highlords across Westeros. Later he tortured and executed Brandon and his father Rickard. Aerys then called for the heads of Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark, which was the last straw and caused the rebellion to rise against the crown. It’s a common misunderstanding that the mere act of Rhaegar and Lyanna eloping caused a war. Specifically, the conduct of Aerys in response to Brandon started the war.

It is unknown how Brandon arrived at the conclusion that Lyanna was kidnapped. Was he told by somebody it was a kidnapping? Did a messenger get the message wrong? Did Brandon just assume it was a kidnapping? Whatever caused this misunderstanding in Brandon caused the war that followed. The realm may never forget how the Wild Wolf charged into the Red Keep yelling for blood, but they will forget what set him off on his rage.

Jon Snow Ygritte season 2

To turn away from R+L=J for a moment, let’s look at the eponymous J himself, Jon Snow. If Jon’s life continues on its epic trajectory, his many deeds will be recorded and analyzed for generations to come. But there’s one moment that won’t be recorded, yet had an enormous impact on his life. That is the moment when he holds his sword against the wildling Ygritte.

Jon lowered his sword. “Go,” he muttered.

Ygritte stared.

“Now,” he said, “before my wits return. Go.”

– A Clash of Kings, Jon VI

In this moment, Jon accepts the humanity of his enemy and lets his future love escape. Had he not done so, there is no one that can speak up for him when Rattleshirt’s hunting party catches Jon and Qhorin Halfhand. No one that will vouch for Jon in front of Mance and Tormund. Without Ygritte, Jon is another Waymar Royce- just another cocky lordling slain beyond the Wall.

And even if he survived, his romance with Ygritte is a primary motivator for his character. He carries her like a torch inside him, the fire to his ice. A Jon that has never known love and lost it is not the Lord Commander we know. He’d still be a boy playing at the grown-up game. The loss of his love matured and hardened his heart to do what Maester Aemon tells Jon he must do,

Kill the boy and let the man be born.

– A Dance with Dragons, Jon II

History, in real life and the fantasy world, is often told in terms of massive battles and huge moments. With the American Civil War, people can rattle off the names of battles and large turning points, and yet, like with Game of Thrones, the small moments are often forgotten. For instance, Special Order 191 was a set of orders from General Robert E. Lee detailing his upcoming strategy- and accidentally left behind in a Confederate camp. The Union got a hold of these orders and by chance, Brigadier General Alpheus Williams verified the orders as being legitimate because they were written by a former colleague whose penmanship he recognized. The Union acted on these orders and were finally able to find Lee’s army, leading to the bloody Battle of Antietam and the Confederates fleeing back into Virginia. This was an enormous turning point in the war that would’ve never happened if that set of orders wasn’t found, and if a general didn’t recognize the penmanship.

This event is such a clear turning point that it has been used to create alternate timelines and fiction of what happens if the orders aren’t discovered in television series, stories, comic books, and even video games. And yet, not many people know or are taught about it, much like these examples from ASOIAF. George R.R. Martin is a noted student and lover of history, and it’s unsurprising that he chose to insert these kinds of innocuous yet world-changing events into his narrative. And also given that his world is one of magic, prophecy, and limited time travel, it creates a question for us whether or not these events were manufactured or random.

The dominoes that fall, leading to war and devastation, are often unassuming in their time. Yet when seen from a longer view, they are great chains going backwards from flash points, fuses lit and sparking across time. Entire wars have been started or won on small individual decisions. Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire are no different. Nothing just happens; there’s cause and effect in the places we least expect. As we watch the final season of the show and the books come to a close, we should continue looking for these kinds of pivotal moments. They are the building blocks that the moments we cheer and cry for are built on.

Filming at Winterfell Begins; Plus A Batch of New Names for Season 8!

Winterfell white raven

As always, Game of Thrones has been busy in Moneyglass, Northern Ireland of late! And based on the newest pics, after months of preparations, it looks like cameras are finally rolling at the set that serves as Winterfell each year.

In addition to the filming news, we have a few small casting updates for you all this weekend, so keep on scrolling and get stoked because the final filming season of Game of Thrones is still getting revved up.

If you take a closer look at this image, you can see the lights in action and the white trucks indicating that the whole cavalry’s in town now.

Photo: twitter.com/alinaastark

Photo: twitter.com/alinaastark

As for who and what they’re filming, it’s unconfirmed. However, we have had reports about filming in nearby Toome, and this may be connected to the Moneyglass set. Visit our Toome report for more details!

Along with the above photos, @alinaastark also scored pics of the mammoth set in progress in the Titanic Quarter. It doesn’t look like the set has changed too much in the past few days, so speculation is still wide open when it comes to these sets. The huge and sprawling creation may serve for multiple Westerosi sites, or ultimately one castle. It’s unclear, though multiple seems more likely, given the show’s knack for using and re-using the heck out of locations for maximum effect.

In other news, we have a few casting notes this weekend!

According to her resume, Danielle Galligan will be playing a character named “Sarra” in a season 8 episode directed by David Nutter. The only instance of the name Sarra appearing in A Song of Ice and Fire is Sarra Frey, one of Walder Frey’s countless granddaughters. Will the Frey girls be making an appearance in season 8, after Arya annihilated the male line of the clan? That’s up for debate. It’s entirely possible that Game of Thrones is simply once again borrowing a name from the books to use for another minor and unrelated character.

Another new addition this season is Emer McDaid. Her Spotlight CV notes that she just wrapped for season 8, but it doesn’t specify a role name or any other details.

Galligan and McDaid posed together for a photo at the Crown Bar in Belfast on November 12th and shared it on Instagram. It’s captioned, “Aaaaaand that’s a wrap,” leaving no doubt that the actresses were filming. The third actress in the photo is Alice Nokes.

3

So far there’s no confirmation of Nokes appearing on Thrones, but it seems very likely.

As far as other potential roles, we did see a casting notice for a sassy and attractive girl, a “Northern girl playing a good, memorable one-scene part in one episode, playing opposite leading cast.” That part was set to shoot the week starting November 6th. Timewise it works out, but that’s just one role.

Another thing worth mentioning: Independent Agency, based in Northern Ireland, states on their website, “Thomas Finnegan, Conor Maguire, Emer McDaid, Eileen McCloskey and Katie Tumelty join the cast of a major TV series.” Agency sites often avoid mentioning GoT by name, to avoid HBO’s wrath, so it’s possible that the other names on this list might have bagged roles on the show too.

Review: Winter is Here with Brewery Ommegang’s newest gift pack!

Ommegang Winter is Here gift pack
Brewery Ommegang would like to wish you all a happy holidays with a new gift pack to toast the holiday season. This season has two different brews: “Winter is Here” double white ale, which is a new addition, and the previously released “Fire and Blood.” Many thanks to Brewery Ommegang for providing the beers reviewed below!

Like with other Game of Thrones Ommegang packs, there are two 750ml beers in gleaming mahogany-hued bottles with a lovely glass bearing the title of the show in gold. From great scientific research (I’ve drunk a lot of these), the beers always taste better when you use one of the included glasses. Plus they make your Belgian-style beers from idyllic Cooperstown, NY look super fancy.

Starting with “Winter is Here,” the latest beer in the Game of Thrones lineup, the label bears the face of the dreaded Night King who, keeping it real, has sort of a sassy expression. The Night King’s sass may be warranted because as a Brewery Ommegang enthusiast, “Winter is Here” is unlike any Ommegang beer I’ve tried before. My first thought after tasting was “Wow! That’s really different!”

I love comparing Ommegang beers to each other, so “Winter is Here” would be the rowdy cousin to Witte, with a bold, flourishing sip that ends smooth with a hint of sweetness.

Winter is Here OmmegangAs described by Ommegang:

We’ve developed a fortifying double wheat ale with a warming spice, sure to outlast the endless cold. If anything can stand against the Night King, surely it must be beer!

It is forever canon for me that the people of Westeros prevailed against the army of the Night King drunk on Ommegang beer. Make it so, D&D.

More on the beer:

Brewed with pilsner malt, white wheat malt and soft red flakes. Hopping with Saaz hops. spiced with white pepper, sea salt, coriander and sweet orange peel. Fermented with our house house Belgian yeast.

One of Ommegang’s strengths is their ability to infuse their beers with flavors you can taste individually, but which blend together the longer you savor them. This beer has got a KICK, not unlike some of the other ones, but there is spiciness followed by a really surprising smoothness; pepper chased by a whisper of honey. It’s aggressively delicious.

Between the bold flavor and the 8.3% ABV (that’s high, y’all), this is not a chuggable beer so please park yourself somewhere and enjoy sipping it because you’re wasting the flavor (and getting legitimately buzzed) if you guzzle it. Respect the beer!

“Fire and Blood” comes to us again this season, and was the third beer in the Game of Thrones/Ommegang collaboration in 2014.

According to the Brewery:

It’s brewed with pilsner, spelt, rye, and other specialty malts, hopped with Styrian Golding and German Tettnang hops, and spiced with ancho chilies for additional complexity. The hue is deep, dark red with a persistent, creamy, off-white head. The flavor of sweet malt gives way to faint dryness and is balanced by spicy rye and hop flavors with underlying raisin and prune notes. The finish offers balanced malt and spicy characteristics from hop and rye.

Thirsty yet?

It’s an interesting pairing because I had a similar reaction when I first drank “Fire and Blood”: “Wow, this is different from anything I’ve had from Ommegang!” It’s similarly spicy with a swirl of flavors that present separately, then blend into something awesome. This one is 6.8% ABV with cool artwork on the label depicting Drogon. If you had to break up the set, this might be a better beer to gift purely on visual grounds, because dragon > Sass King, infrastructure destroyer and sedate javelin-throwing enthusiast. Taste-wise, if you’re looking to give something lively in an unusual away, part ways with “Winter is Here.”

As the beer correspondent of Watchers on the Wall (Editor’s Note: that’s not a real thing), I rule this a perfect present for beer lovers and Game of Thrones fans you know, and a great White Elephant present if you like your coworkers. Or one could just buy it and drink it by themselves, no judgment here. Plus, at less than $25 suggested retail, it’s inexpensive! Win.

Based on the comments for these, the Game of Thrones Brewery Ommegang beers are a commodity that can be hard to find. Pro-tip: the website has a feature to locate Ommegang near you. Happy hunting, and more importantly, happy drinking!

Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington to be Submitted in 2018 Golden Globes’ Lead Acting Categories for Game of Thrones

All aboard, whether you like it or not.

Gold Derby reports that Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) and Kit Harington (Jon Snow) are to be submitted by HBO as lead acting contenders for Game of Thrones at the 2018 Golden Globes, an unusual move on HBO’s part. We remember back when HBO submitted Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister) and Sean Bean (Eddard Stark – RIP) for season 1 at the 2011 Emmys, but with the show not reaching the worldwide popularity and pop culture dominance it now holds, they did not clinch the nominations. Hopefully, Harington and Clarke will fare better, but they have not even been submitted yet, let alone nominated, so hold your direwolves before celebrating!

Historically, HBO has done its best to spread the wealth instead of putting all their eggs in one basket. Clearly the runaway success has been Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister), who won the only Golden Globe for which he was nominated (season 1), and has been nominated for Emmys for all 6 years of GoT, having won two (seasons 1 and 5). However, since season 3, people not named Peter Dinklage have begun to pick up steam amidst the increasingly stiff Emmy competition; Dame Diana Rigg (Olenna Tyrell) was nominated for guest actress in seasons 3, 4, and 5, Headey finally broke through at the Emmys with nominations for the past three seasons (4-6), and Maisie Williams (Arya) finally cracked an Emmy nomination for season 6. Even Max von Sydow (Three-Eyed Raven) got in on the action for season 6 with a one-shot guest actor nomination.

Like Williams, Harington received his first Emmy nomination for season 6, but Clarke has already received three Emmy nominations, ever since Daenerys began her freedom-tour of Essos (seasons 3, 4, and 6). However, all the major players have largely been competing in the supporting or guest categories in either awards show. Should either Harington or Clarke emerge victorious at the reading of the ballots, it would be multiple firsts for either of them, as GoT acting nominations have not been as prominent at the Golden Globes as they have been at the Emmys, nor has either of them been nominated before as a lead in either awards show.

Another reason to get excited is that Seth Meyers was just recently announced as the Golden Globes 2018 host. A well-documented fanboy of Game of Thrones, Meyers has invited Kit Harington to a dinner party, brought Melisandre to a baby shower, and thrilled us all with the continued adventures of Leslie Jones’ “Game of Jones” here and here. We will hopefully see a good dose of GoT-related humor at the telecast.

The Golden Globe nominations will be read on December 11th. What do you think their odds are? What competition do you think they’ll face? Any other Golden Globe predictions you’d like to share? Please do so in the comments below!

Watchers on the Wall Awards Season 7: Funniest Quote – Preliminary Round

WotW season7-awards

We’ve covered the All-Around Best Quote of the year already in our preliminary round, but we love to celebrate the humorous side of Game of Thrones here. The wit and snarky back-and-forth of the show is a delight that balances out the darkness and drama. With so many funny bits, it’s tough to choose, but that’s a good problem to have. We’re voting on the Funniest Quote of Season 7, and it’s time to narrow it down to five!

The standard rules: Select up to FIVE nominees from the poll. You can choose fewer if you like, but you cannot choose more than 5. (Visit the initial WotW Awards post for a complete explanation of the rules and process.)

At the end of 72 hours (Saturday 11/25/17 at 1PM Eastern Time), whichever five quotes have the most votes will continue on to the finals. The results of the poll will be revealed when it’s time to choose the final winner in a couple weeks.

Emilia Clarke graces Harper’s Bazaar’s cover, talks love, life, and sex on Game of Thrones

The Mother of Dragons (Emilia Clarke) is featured as the cover story and photo shoot for the December/January edition of Harper's Bazaar.

The Mother of Dragons (Emilia Clarke) is featured as the cover story and photo shoot for the December/January edition of Harper’s Bazaar.

Don’t misunderstand: Emilia Clarke adores her role as Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones. But she’s also sick of hearing people talk about the show’s dragons and nudity instead of its rich story and complex characters.

“I’m starting to get really annoyed about this stuff now because people say, ‘Oh, yeah, all the porn sites went down when Game of Thrones came back on.’ I’m like, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale?’ I fucking love that show, and I cried when it ended because I couldn’t handle not seeing it. That is all sex and nudity. There are so many shows centered around this very true fact that people reproduce,” she tells Harper’s Bazaar, in which she is not only featured on the cover of the December/January edition but also the focus of a gorgeously photographed centerpiece story. “People fuck for pleasure—it’s part of life.”

It’s a very frank answer, but one that fans of Clarke are used to, given her direct way of answering interview questions and never shying away from colorful language. That refreshing style is on full display in the Bazaar article, in which she discusses everything from dating and finding true love to her frustration at finding herself when her career began.

As to the former, being one of the most well-known actors in the world doesn’t mean that love falls into Clarke’s lap. Relationships change as we get older, she says, and the romantic notion of finding “the one” is something on which her perspective has shifted as well.

“There is ‘the one’ for particular parts of your life … So when I was in my teens, there was ‘the one’ for my teens, for sure, and then, you know, there’s ‘the one’ for the next time of your life,” she says.

Clarke also talks about how her career itself has changed, transforming into the worldwide fame she enjoys as a strong female leader from a beginning in which she wasn’t sure she had the “right look” for roles she was interested in.

“It got me angry. Well, no, not angry. … But it pushed me into another casting type; forced me to be an actor,” she says. “Instead of … the light, airy stuff, I would be the granny who cracks wise, or a down-and-out hooker who has seen better days.”

The article is peppered with other interesting tidbits, ranging from her family history — she’s one-eighth Indian — to her love of Italian people. “People in Italy let you know how they feel,” she says. “I like that I don’t need to guess.” Obscenities are still sprinkled here and there, letting readers know for sure — as if they had any doubt — that this is authentic Clarke, regardless of the sumptuous, high-fashion shoots that accompany the article.

Hacker to Be Charged for HBO Server Attack and Attempted Extortion

Littlefinger2

They say all publicity is good publicity, but I’m pretty sure this mantra quickly dissipates once you’re sitting on the other side of a jail cell. Such might soon be the fate for the alleged thief who hacked the HBO database and leaked data on HBO’s Game of Thrones. Variety reports that Behzad Mesri, an Iranian citizen will be charged by federal authorities for breaking into HBO computers and stealing data. During the airing of season 7 in summer 2017, we talked about this quite a bit here, and here, and even here! But the adrenaline rush a hacker must get by stealing the content of the world’s most popular television show surely isn’t worth the price paid at the other end of it…

“In July, HBO confirmed that its computer systems had been breached, resulting in what it said was “the compromise of proprietary information.” The hacker, who called himself “Mr. Smith” in some communiques, reportedly made off with a trove of 1.5 terabytes of data and demanded millions in ransom payments from HBO in Bitcoin.”

Looks like ‘Mr. Smith’ has finally met his match – just how devastating the consequences will be is something we’ll soon find out, as the U.S. Attorney’s Office in New York has scheduled an upcoming press conference to detail the charges. But Game of Thrones wasn’t the only HBO program safe from the hacker who fashions himself a Brad Pitt wannabe. They also released:

“…episodes of HBO shows including “Ballers” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” HBO offered a $250,000 payoff to the hacker as a so-called “bug bounty,” but that move was in fact was a stall tactic by HBO as it assessed the situation.

Listen, Game of Thrones is one thing, but when you mess with Dwayne Johnson and Larry David, there will be hell to pay!!! We’ll see what happens after details emerge from the press conference…

Game of Threads: A Lady’s Armor – Sansa Stark

SansaCover

In this edition of “Game of Threads,” we take an in-depth look at Sansa Stark, a character that for the majority of her trajectory uses fashion to adapt or remain under the radar. This is in contrast to characters like Cersei, Daenerys, and Margaery who use the way they dress to exact their station in subtle power plays. This does change, however, in more recent seasons, as she finally comes into her own and begins to use her clothing to show that she is no longer a pawn in another person’s game, but her own person who is now thriving in a position of power. It should be noted that her strongest motif early on is the dragonfly, a symbol of fragility and beauty, but also a creature that goes through many stages of life on the way to its final form. The same can be said for Sansa’s wardrobe.

SansaSeason1

Sansa begins her story in her ancestral home of Winterfell, wearing garments that any high-born lady of the North would, but dreams of becoming queen and dressing in all the finery that comes with it. It is noted that Sansa is a skilled stitcher and makes much of her own clothing. It is evident, however, that because she is young, there is room for improvement, as the dresses she wears are a bit ill-fitting and simple. Still, she delights at the prospect of wedding Prince Joffrey and creates a new dress with a far less Northern influence, replacing high collars and cloaks with knotted roses and other warmer-climate motifs.

SansaSeason1detail

When her father Ned is called to King’s Landing to be King Robert Baratheon’s Hand, she relocates to the Red Keep with him and her sister Arya. There, Sansa slowly begins dressing with a more Southern influence, taking note of the elements of the dress of the current queen, Cersei Lannister. By mid- season, she is regularly sporting the elaborate up-dos of the other ladies of court, and eschews her simpler Northern gowns for Cersei’s robe-like wrapped dresses with detailed embroidery, secured with metal belts, in an attempt to fit in with her new companions. Her signature blue color is still evident in her robes until she is manipulated by the Lannisters and eventually forced to watch the beheading of her father. Afterwards, she begins wearing muted pinks and mauves to try to fade into the background and endure her still-standing engagement to the monster that ordered her father killed.

SansaSeason2

Throughout Season 2, Sansa’s finery and clothing details become less and less a priority for her, as she continues to navigate her way around her psychotic betrothed and her imprisonment to his family. The embroidery becomes less intricate and the delicate pinks and blues give way to heavier purples. In fact, the last time we see her in the Northern pale blue she began the story in is when she begins menstruating, signaling to her captors that she can now bear children, thus belonging fully to them.

When King’s Landing is attacked at Blackwater Bay, Sansa is forced to take refuge with the other women and children of the court. Before this, however, she sees Joffrey off to battle with veiled sarcasm, wearing what will become her new signature wardrobe for the foreseeable future- a dusty mauve colored robe in a heavy damask, with a muted purple scarf under the neckline. Once the city is made safe with the alliance of Houses Lannister and Tyrell, Sansa appears at court wearing the same mauve tones, to watch Joffrey dole out awards and subsequently be replaced by Margaery Tyrell as the future queen, much to her relief.

SansaSeason3

Sansa’s storyline in Season 3 is spent in three variations on the same theme. The purple-on-purple damask robe from the previous season, a more brownish purple with a series of interlocking shapes, and a light mauve with a bolder golden woven pattern. She is no longer the queen to be, but still a ward of the Lannisters so she believes that her best bet is to keep a low profile and remain “muted.” When Margaery and Sansa begin spending time together, Sansa starts to take note of a few of Margaery’s style choices, as well as her influence as a kind-hearted politician and friend. Once marriage is proposed between Sansa and Loras Tyrell, Sansa starts to implement a few Tyrell touches to her look- notably, she begins styling her hair off the face like Margaery for the first time when she meets with Loras following the proposal, quickly adapting to her happy prospect. But keeping Margaery’s influence only to her hair ensures that it isn’t too obvious that there is a plan happening behind the Lannisters’ backs. Still, had she successfully married Loras and left for Highgarden, it would have been nice to see Sansa’s take on the fashions of the Reach.

SansaWeddingDress1

Unfortunately, the plot is quickly put to an end and, to her dismay, Sansa is wed to Tyrion Lannister. Her wedding gown is a culmination of the many elements that were beyond her control that lead her to this point, as well and the many strong women she’s been tutored by, for better or for worse. It is rendered in her muted purple but it has been overtaken with a Lannister-gold woven damask. The cap-sleeves are influenced by Margaery’s own cap-sleeves, the metal hip pieces call to mind Cersei’s armored gowns, and the embroidered piece that wraps from her neck and across her chest calls to mind the embroidered collars of her mother, Catelyn Stark.

SansaWeddingDress1detail

The embroidery, itself, has elements of Stark direwolves and Tully fish, but as the embroidery winds upwards, the direwolves are tangled with lions, leading to the highest point of the piece at the back of her neck features a crowned Lannister lion, her new family by law. Embroiderer Michele Carragher stated that she and designer Michele Clapton wanted the embroidery to look as if Cersei had a hand in designing it, hence the lion ending up on top. Her hair is also back to the full Lannister court updo that she last sported in the Season 2 finale.

SansaSeason4

Season 4 begins with the aftermath of her family’s slaughter at the Red Wedding.  Sansa returns to her mauves in hopes that she will again fade into the background and be ignored so she can mourn in peace. Her peace is cut short when she is forced to join the entire capital in celebrating the Royal Wedding of Joffrey and Margaery. She dons a new robe, entirely in a deeper purple silk than usual, with a floral relief pattern (side note: upon further inspection, this looks like it could be cut from a similar fabric to Maragery’s purple “Winds of Winter” dress). This sartorial change is in direct parallel to the drastic change her story is about to take. She unknowingly partakes in the murder of Joffrey, orchestrated by Olenna Tyrell and Littlefinger, by wearing a necklace with jewels made from a lethal poison.

She is spirited away to a ship where apparently Littlefinger had the forethought to pack an extra dress from Sansa’s wardrobe, because she begins wearing a different pattern than the one she escaped in. She takes refuge in The Eyrie with her unstable aunt Lysa and cousin Robyn Arryn, regularly wearing her purple damask until Lysa is murdered by Baelish after their very recent nuptials. He becomes the de facto Lord of the Vale, and she begins to play the game as well as those she has learned from all these years. Her style subsequently takes another bold turn with the now infamous “goth” Sansa dress she created herself, using dark fabric and feathers- a nod to her earlier “little bird” motif- and creating a necklace that embodies her own needle and thread- a nod to Arya’s sword, Needle, and finished the look off with a darker hair color. This is the ultimate power dress for her, and additionally symbolizes her knowledge of how to manipulate Littlefinger’s “mockingbird.”

SansaSeason5

Sansa’s clothing in Season 5 seems to be all over the map. She begins the season leaving The Eyrie and setting out on the road to Winterfell with Littlefinger, wearing an almost carbon copy of his fur-lined, black winter robes. She arrives at Winterfell to her Littlefinger-brokered engagement to Ramsay Bolton, wearing her feathered black power dress again, subtly making sure they know that this is her home. Throughout the rest of the season, Sansa wears what looks like the old robes of Catelyn’s that she found in the castle. Either that, or she made clothing from her memory of her mother, from the shape of the robe, to the embroidered collar, to the gathering of the neck of the Tully-blue underdress. She even begins styling her hair similarly to Cat. Interestingly, much of Sansa’s way of relating to or channeling others is through her hair.

SansaWeddingDress2

The shape of her second wedding gown is meant to evoke the large furs of her father and brothers, and is fastened with Tully fish clasps- another homage to her mother. The pure white color perfectly complements the snowy North, but also signals to the Boltons that she is still pure and virginal. It is interesting to note that the chevron patter on the majority of the gown is the same pattern that is worn under the armor of Mace Tyrell and his army in “Blood of My Blood.” This is a subtle signal that she is still armed and on her guard, and rightfully so.

SansaSeason6

SansaSeason6detail

After escaping the Boltons and Winterfell, Sansa finds herself reunited with Jon Snow at Castle Black in Season 6. There, she spends most of her time strategizing with Jon on how to reclaim their home, and less on creating new clothes for herself, but she goes back to wearing her hair in the Northern style of two braids at the crown of her head leading back to a full plait, the same as her introduction in Season 1. She starts wearing furs in practical use for warmth as well as for a visual tie to Jon. The ultimate “Sansa Stark” dress, however, comes when she parleys with Ramsay before the Battle of the Bastards.  She creates a brand-new gown, rendered in a Stark blue-grey velvet, finally, ultimately returning to her roots. It is finished off with an intricately embroidered direwolf, embellished in steel grey, silver, and mother of pearl beads. It is elegant, stately, at the same time both delicate and strong, and it is a giant “fuck you” to Ramsay.

SansaSeason7

SansaSeason7detail

Now, in Season 7, as the Lady of Winterfell, fully in control of her future and governing Winterfell in Jon’s stead, Sansa is dressing the part of commander. Her color palette exists solely in the blacks, greys, and browns of the North, and she wears a formidable fur cloak to emulate the male leaders before her, but again, keeping design elements as reminders of all those that have shaped her journey along the way. Her needle necklace has been reimagined in a solid steel and elements of her gown call to mind armor, to protect herself once and for all from those that would seek to manipulate or harm her. Sansa has now come into her final evolution, or, to borrow ASoIaF text, gone from “porcelain, to ivory, to steel.”
