The cast of the Game of Thrones spinoff expands once more, with House of the Dragon announcing several new additions today! Variety confirmed seven more actors for the show, including Graham McTavish, who has made his appearing on HOTD a public secret already. McTavish will be playing the part of Ser Harrold Westerling, a role many speculated for him. Variety was able to confirm his role on the show and make quite a few other exciting announcements.
In addition to McTavish, the new cast members include:
Ryan Corr as Ser Harwin ‘Breakbones’ Strong – “‘Breakbones’, Harwin is said to be the strongest man in the Seven Kingdoms. Ser Harwin is the eldest son to Master of Laws Lyonel Strong and heir to Harrenhal.”
Jefferson Hall as as Lord Jason Lannister – “The Lord of Casterly Rock and twin to Ser Tyland Lannister; and Tyland Lannister– A crafty and calculating politician, twin to Lord Jason Lannister.” If Hall looks familiar, it’s because you all watched him die in the first season of Game of Thrones as Ser Hugh of the Vale, in the Tourney of the Hand.
David Horovitch as Grand Maester Mellos – A voice of reason and trusted advisor to King Viserys.
Matthew Needham as Larys Strong – Younger son of Master of Laws Lyonel Strong, brought to court by his father.
Bill Paterson as Lord Lyman Beesbury – Lord of Honeyholt and Master of Coin on King Viserys’s small council.
Gavin Spokes as Lord Lyonel Strong – Master of Laws to King Viserys and Lord of Harrenhal.
The complete description for McTavish’s Ser Harrold Westerling is, “Ser Harrold has served in the Kingsguard since the days of King Jaehaerys; he is a paragon of chivalry and honor.”
Fantastic day! Are you looking forward to anyone in particular? I was wondering if HBO would ever have an issue with casting on HOTD someone who’d been on GoT in a speaking role. Granted it was season 1, and not a large part, but still. It opens the door for it to happen again.

We’re finally getting a look at Daemon Targaryen’s violent, warlike side. New photos from set give us a glimpse of Daemon wearing armor and an interesting war council scene. You know that saying “Don’t punish the messenger?” Daemon certainly doesn’t.
The twitter account, House of the Dragon Brasil (@HOTDBr), tweeted photos of Matt Smith on set as Daemon Targaryen looking very Rogue Prince-ish, indeed, in armor.

Curiously, there’s no sign of the Targaryen three-headed dragon on his breastplate but, rather, a … semi-circle with three points that is either a sigil I don’t recognize or a tear in his armor.
Members of the Kingsguard and “new injured extras” (one of whom looks like he’s having a blast) were also present.

@HOTDBr also posted a photo and video of House Velaryon holding a war council that includes Corlys Velaryon (obviously) and Daemon Targaryen, which supports speculation that these scenes take place during the War for the Stepstones.

In the video we see a royal messenger deliver some bad news to Daemon Targaryen who proceeds to beat the stuffing out of the poor guy before storming off. I hope those who were worried about Daemon’s portrayal after Matt Smith was cast are put at ease by this. #MattSmithAsDaemonTargaryenApologistForLife.
And apparently that’s a wrap for filming on the beaches in Cornwall, according to @HOTDBr. Nice to know that the team cleaned the beach and left a thank you note for locals.

The goods just keep on comin’! Mere days after we caught a first look at Laenor Velaryon and some grizzly post-battle action, new set photos grace us with a glimpse of Daemon Targaryen wielding his legendary Valyrian steel blade, Dark Sister!
In photos tweeted by @HOTDBr and published on Metro, we see Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen walking along a beach carrying a sword that can only the famous Dark Sister,

For those fuzzy on Targaryen history… or who have simply lost track of all the named swords in Westeros, Dark Sister was the Valyrian steel sword originally wielded by Visenya Targaryen, sister-wife to Aegon the Conqueror. The sword’s last known owner was Brynden Rivers aka Blood Raven aka the Three-Eyed Crow and its current location during the events of A Song of Ice and Fire is unknown (and the subject of much speculation and theorizing). But for a while there between Visenya and Brynden, Dark Sister belonged to Daemon Targaryen and though the sword was pretty much guaranteed to feature in House of the Dragon it’s still exciting to see it on set for the first time.
Perhaps the most jarring of these new photos is the one of Daemon Targaryen on his back with Dark Sister seemingly sticking out of his stomach.
While this has caused some panic online (and it would be pretty funny if Daemon dies in the show by tripping on his sword), I’d say this is pretty clearly a trick of perspective. The sword is stuck in the sand and Daemon is lying beside it.
Of course, it’s unclear from these photos why the great and dignified Rogue Prince is lying in the dirt by himself. I wonder if this scene takes place at an emotional low point for Daemon and if House of the Dragon will offer us a glimpse at who Daemon is when he’s not performing his machismo for others.

Corpses on the beach! Tyroshi pirates! Our first glimpses of some important Velaryons! Filming on House of the Dragon has been sprinting along nicely as of late and as the kids say, we’re here for it.
We were gifted with an absolute slew of photos from imgur, pointed out by our friend @MeereeneseKnot on Twitter:

There’s more than four dozen photos of what looks like an intense day of filming by the water. It appears to be the aftermath of a battle at sea, with debris scattered along the shore and prisoners (and a few corpses) staked out in low tide:
There’s also some definite pirate looting going on and lots of scenes with soldiers in Targaryen armor, so I’m betting that this is filming the Battle of the Gullet and its immediate aftermath. I won’t spoil anything for you; suffice it to say that it’s a major engagement during the Dance (and if they pull it off it’s going to rival Blackwater as the best GoT-related naval battle ever put to film).
The photos also include several shots of an older woman with Targaryen-blonde hair hiding under a bonnet, and thank the Seven above, it’s our first look at Eve Best as Rhaenys Targaryen! The Queen Who Never Was plays an important role in the Dance of the Dragons and was an undisputed badass, so it’s exciting to see Best on set for the first time. In these photos, she’s seen alongside two younger male actors, both of whom are sporting what appears to be Targaryen red attire and have — wait for it — brown hair.
If you’re not familiar with the Dance storyline, three of Rhaenrya Targaryen‘s sons with her first husband, Laenor Valeryon, are pretty, ahem, un-Targaryen in appearance — something that plays out to devastating effect in the civil war between her and her half-brother, Aegon II Targaryen. So it looks as though they’ve cast at least two of the three sons so far (my vote is Jaecerys and Lucerys). Hooray for more Velaryons!
(These are just some of the incredible photos from the account, by the way — I encourage you to take a look at all of them!)
Next, we saw a crop of photos from Twitter account Portal House of the Dragon Brasil, featuring young Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock) and — for the first time! — Laenor Velaryon:
| AS FILMAGENS NÃO PARAM!

The actor playing Laenor hasn’t been announced yet, but given that this actor has the same sigil and pale dreadlocks seen on a different Velaryon (and he’s walking the beach with Rhaenyra) it certainly appears that he’s been cast. And can we take some time to appreciate the costuming game for HotD so far? They’re doing Michele Clapton proud.
What do you think of these new photos? Who are some of these characters? Let us know in the comments!
