Round-up: Richard Madden re-watches Robb’s death, Kit Harington says he “burst in tears” after finishing s8 and more!

0_wId-57zR680UzoaG

Richard Madden and Kit Harington both took bittersweet trips down memory lane recently, Madden, by re-watching The Red Wedding and Harington by reflecting on the end of his tenure on Game of Thrones. Additionally, Maisie Williams has announced that she will also be attending Comic Con Experience in Brazil in December.

As part of GQ‘s new video series GQ Action Replay, Richard Madden (who features on the cover of their January/February issue) was asked to re-watch his own death scene at The Red Wedding.

“This is quite an emotional sequence,” he said dryly. “Just as an actor … watching your unborn child be murdered and then your wife slowly dying in your arms. Not a comedy.”

As the scene played out, Madden explained how the hydraulic pump full of fake blood hidden beneath his costume malfunctioned on the first take of Robb’s stabbing and shared that he’d had to catch a plane back to London immediately after completing the scene where he’d sat “covered in fake blood, exhausted and just sobbing very loudly on the plane. And people were looking at me quite strangely because it looked like I’d just murdered someone and got on a flight. Which, in fact, I hadn’t. I’d been murdered.”

He also praised Michelle Fairley’s acting several times. Like a good son.

Kit Harington is currently co-starring in the play True West in London, which he discussed in an interview with TORYmax. He was asked how performing at the Vaudeville Theatre compared to starring on Game of Thrones

“You know, I think people think that’s the sort of glamorous bit. I find this the glamorous bit,” he said. “My job is to come in and play to a West End audience every night. That for me is quite glamorous whereas Thrones filming was quite often outside in some foreign country away from all your mates in a muddy field.”

When asked how he reacted to completing his final scene, Harington was honest. “I burst into tears,” he said. “You know, it’s a weird thing. I’m not sad about it ending. I just feel very joyous about it ending and having completed it but it doesn’t make it any less emotional.”

Lastly, Maisie Williams has added her name to the list of Game of Thrones alumni who will be appearing at Comic Con Experience (CCXP) in Brazil. Williams announced her attendance on Twitter in typical Maisie fashion.

Game of Thrones reunion special has been confirmed for the complete series box set

reunion

HBO certainly plays the long game. Earlier this year, a Game of Thrones reunion special was filmed in Belfast, hosted by Conan O’Brien. However, it has recently been announced that there are no plans to air it on HBO’s network. Rather, it will be exclusively available on the Game of Thrones complete series box set due for release at some point in 2019.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the reunion special will heavily feature the cast members who made it to the final season. However, actors who departed the show years ago will also be making an appearance, though HBO is being tight-lipped as to who exactly that will be.

Sean Bean has been confirmed (as befits the literal poster boy of season 1). Jason Momoa was also spotted in Belfast earlier this year, though no information has come to light as to whether that had to do with the reunion special or if he was just visiting friends on the set of season 8.

In other news, if you are fortunate enough to be in São Paulo, Brazil this December, be sure to stop by CCXP (Comic Con Experience). Sophie Turner and John Bradley will be there, as well as D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Weiss and Benioff don’t often attend comic cons so this will be a rare and exciting opportunity to attend, if you get the chance.

Iain Glen: The final episodes of Game of Thrones are “feature-length”

Game of Thrones actor Iain Glen compares Season 8 experience to watching six movies

Jorah Jon Sandor Group

This morning on ITV’s Lorraine, Iain Glen showed up with Ruth Wilson to promote their new BBC drama Mrs. Wilson, based on the remarkable real life story of Wilson’s own family, but Game of Thrones had to come up, and it did, with the Scottish actor proclaiming yet again that season eight’s six final episodes will be particularly long.

Though most of the segment pertains to Mrs. Wilson (and it’s well worth a look), in the last seconds the actors discuss their upcoming projects, including Game of Thrones:

“I don’t know how I [survived this long]; I got every disease known to [man],” the actor first jokes at poor Jorah’s expense, before getting down to brass tacks: “April is when it’s all coming out, and they’re all feature-length episodes. Six of them. [Like] six movies.”

This isn’t the first time Glen makes such claims, though HBO had previously denied them, according to EW. What are we make of these confusing contradictions, then? Perhaps that what constitutes a “feature” is pretty subjective: depending on who you ask, every Game of Thrones episode ever aired is feature-length, or none of them are.

Will we get six two-hour films as a final season? Of course not. We can forget about that. However, will all the episodes easily pass the one-hour mark, for the first time ever? Season eight director David Nutter seems to think so, and he would know; and showrunners David Benioff & Dan Weiss originally planned to air the final season as three proper theatrical films, which equates to six one-hour-plus episodes quite well.

Also, as I have pointed out before, season seven was shorter too, and its remaining seven episodes were six minutes longer in average, with the longest of them running for an hour and twenty minutes. Meanwhile, season eight will only give us six final episodes, and yet production lasted for almost twice as long as usual. You do the math!

HBO casting a pair of twins for Game of Thrones prequel series

New Game of Thrones prequel characters: Twin sisters & a proto-wildling elder

One can hope the new twins have a different relationship to the pair we know

One can hope the new twins have a different relationship to the pair we know

Jane Goldman’s Long Night-set spin-off begins filming in just a few months, so it’s no surprise that casting calls for the prequel’s pilot keep popping up again and again. Today, this trend continues! Though personal details remain elusive, today’s batch of casting calls do reveal a few interesting characters… read on for the details!

Contrary to the roles alluded to above, the following are not specified to be series regulars, though we can’t confirm that they won’t be. They could be starring roles, recurring, or perhaps they’re just there for the pilot—there’s just no way to know yet.

The first two characters come in a pack together, which can only mean one thing: twins! Though twin minors are usually cast to share the role of a single child character, doubling work hours without breaking child labor laws, that’s not the case this time: they’re looking for real twins, aged 23 to 29, to play twin sisters in their twenties.

The other character, identified only as “A2”, is a man in his seventies. That alone wouldn’t make it a particularly telling casting call, but they’re looking for a “genuine Scandinavian, Eastern European or German actor.” Though there are exceptions, most Northern and Eastern Europeans in Game of Thrones play wildlings, which would indicate this is another one… except wildlings are, by definition, the human tribes who live north of the Wall—a wall that wasn’t built until the end of the Long Night, which is the purview of this show. So let’s tentatively call him a “proto-wildling”; one of the northernmost First Men who would eventually be trapped beyond the Wall.

So, do you agree, or do you think they’re looking for some other kind of “foreigner”, such as an Essosi? Also: are we finally getting a wholesome twin relationship?

George R. R. Martin promotes Fire & Blood on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

On last night’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, George R. R. Martin showed up to promote his latest book, Fire & Blood, which was published this week, as we just covered. Martin’s conversation with Colbert, however, quickly veers away from his fictional histories to tales of murderous turtles and their shared love of Tolkien. Take a look!

When the interview gets back on track, a highlight is what appears to be Colbert’s genuine shock as he realizes that the hefty 700-page tome in his hand is only the first half of Martin’s planned Targaryen histories, followed by Martin justifying it with a sincere “there were a lot of kings!” and the audience’s enthusiastic applause.

Colbert not so subtly asks him about how is it that this book even exists as he was “supposed to be finishing The Winds of Winter this entire time.” Martin doesn’t provide an answer, but he does say that, once he’s done with the sixth book, he’s at least considering the possibility of writing some more Dunk & Egg stories and/or the second half of Fire & Blood before he gets to the seventh and final book, A Dream of Spring. Considering the show will be over by then, and book readers will be happily occupied for at least a few years scrutinizing The Winds of Winter, our first new ASOIAF entry in a long time, I don’t imagine there would be as much of a backlash to that detour as there has been to the current extended waiting period—at least, I hope there wouldn’t be.

Fire & Blood Release Event with Author George R. R. Martin – The Magician’s Notes

IMG_20181119_195459~2

Greetings fellow Watchers! This past Monday, I was lucky enough to head down to Jersey City and attend the Fire & Blood release event with George R. R. Martin at the restored Lowe’s theater put on by WORD bookstores. I live-tweeted the event on the Watchers on the Wall Twitter at the time, but for my full account keep reading here!

The venue itself was amazing: the spitting image of old-timey movie theaters with the large black lettering on a white background and lights shining brightly in the cold night.

IMG_20181119_185546~2

The theater seated about 1500 people at capacity, and A Song of Ice and Fire and Game of Thrones fans filled the entire place. The line to just get into the building snaked behind into alleys and down sidewalks in front of homes. Once we got inside, it was a truly magnificent sight of gold and molding that reminded me of the glory of Old Valyria.

IMG_20181119_192135~2

Fitting, given the book’s contents. And, of course, that book is what we were all there for, or, more specifically, the stacks and stacks and stacks of signed copies of Fire & Blood. People were grabbing their copies and instantly flipping through the illustrations as they found seats and clutched them like precious treasure.

IMG_20181119_192331~2
IMG_20181119_192216~2

Inside the theater, a 16-year-old organist and a friend on drums were treating the crowd to Game of Thrones music, although a bit of a hush fell over the crowd when he began playing the Rains of Castamere and people scoped out where their nearest exits were.

IMG_20181119_192559~2

On a massive screen, illustrations from the new book (and from George’s upcoming new Nightflyers edition) were rotated through. Finally, the show began as the organ rose up and author, actor, comedian and host for the night John Hodgman came out to introduce the guest of honor, George R.R. Martin, to raucous applause and cheering.

The event moved quickly with John asking George a few questions himself, then asking questions that were gathered ahead of time. Rather than the usual George signing line where fans ask George leading questions in order to winkle out secret plot details, this event asked the attendees to submit their questions via e-mail and a handful were selected. These were the six most interesting highlights in George’s answers:

1. An update on The Winds of Winter:

George acknowledged that The Winds of Winter is late, and that he has been under tremendous pressure to try to finish his next entry in the series by the end of the TV version. But that pressure has now been lifted, meaning he likely has given up on that goal and there won’t be a surprise The Winds of Winter release before this coming season. Although optimists may interpret that he is close to finishing, and that the pressure is lifted because of that. Either way, he confirmed that he is actively working on the book still, “one page at a time.” This is contrasted though with how he described writing Fire & Blood, which he said was much easier and more fun.

2. George of House Brady:

George grew up in the nearby town of Bayonne, and received a few questions on his relationship with the town he left behind and how it showed up in his novels. While at first George downplayed any connections, he eventually offered up some interesting information. He grew up poor, living in projects and going to public school but he was aware that on his mother’s side of the family there was once wealth and success. The Bradys were prosperous members of Bayonne for many years until they were crushed in the Great Depression and never recovered. Their legacy in the town though survived. Across the street from his home in the projects was a dock called Brady’s Dock named after George’s ancestors who built it to support their construction business. George even knew the fancy house his mother grew up in. He used to dream of what it would’ve been like had the Brady’s wealth and success continued, how would his life change?

This theme of fallen families is one that made it directly into A Song of Ice and Fire, George explained, in the characters Daenerys and Viserys Targaryen. With that same feeling of loss of a future, wondering about the family he never knew and their upper class lifestyles, he felt like disinherited royalty much like the two Targaryen siblings. When Dany reads about Westeros in the books she received from her wedding, or when Barristan told her stories about her brother Rhaegar, or she lands in Dragonstone and walks in her family’s home those are actually George wondering about his own family and dreaming of a better life stolen from him in the projects of Bayonne.

3. George’s Favorite Targaryen King:

One of the questions he received was who is George’s favorite Targaryen monarch of all. His answer is unsurprising given the book that was just released: Jaeherys I, the fourth King of Westeros. Jaeherys the Conciliator, as he is better known, ruled over the greatest period of peace and prosperity that the Kingdoms have ever known. But George then said he skipped over Jaeherys in his previous fictional history book, The World of Ice and Fire, because he thinks peace and prosperity are boring. As a result, in Fire & Blood there are huge sections of the book dedicated to Jaeherys and his wife Good Queen Alysanne with many plots, murders, and conflict undercutting the “peace” we’ve been told before. Whether George is experiencing some recency bias with how much he’s written about Jaeherys lately or if he really loves writing about “great” kings with an unexpected amount of conflict, he did not elaborate. But as you read about Jaeherys in Fire & Blood, it’ll be an interesting thing to keep in mind.

4. Not “The Long Night”:

A question from John was concerning the end of Game of Thrones and the upcoming prequel shows that HBO is currently developing and how much they will match up with George’s written works. George confirmed that there are five in development, with the one he’s been calling “the Long Night” currently greenlit and due to begin shooting in Ireland, although he quickly corrected himself and said that HBO has asked him not to call the show that, as it’s not the official title. He went on and described his relationship with the new showrunner Jane Goldman. He said they have met and discussed the new series and communicate regularly, and that he’s a massive fan of Jane’s, implying he has trust in her taking on the ambitious project. However, George stopped short of really answering the question of how much Goldman’s show will match George’s ancient history he’s written already and what is in his head. He went on and said that he will not be as involved in this project as he was with the early seasons of Game of Thrones. Peering between the lines, we may be getting a picture already that George’s world will not be translated point by point for the new series about the Long Night not called the Long Night, and that the content of the series maybe be more out of his hands, more like during the later seasons of Game of Thrones than during the beginning.

5. The Septon, the Maester, and the Fool:

Within Fire & Blood, different sections of the book are written or sourced by multiple characters. Some come from a Maester, others from a Septon, and others from the fool Mushroom who served in the King’s court from the reigns of Viserys I to Aegon III. George has said he set up the book this way because, as someone who enjoys learning about history, the near constant problem is which account of events you decide to trust. He used the example of the Black Dinner in Scotland, the inspiration for his own Red Wedding, which has grown in the telling over time, though the basic truth of the murder at a dinner remains the constant.

Sorting out biases and finding the true narrative among disagreeing primary sources is extremely challenging. He has recreated that in his own history book. As you read you’re supposed to question who is telling you the information contained, think about who the account was written for, and the motives behinds the men holding the pens. Martin went onto to add that when he was a child he loved learning about fantastical stories from history like George Washington chopping down the cherry tree and, even though as he grew older he learned many of those “facts” and stories were often flat-out untrue, he preferred reading those anyway. As such, in Fire & Blood and The World of Ice and Fire, there are many exaggerations that make for better stories than fact, so we as readers should be on our guard for moments when we’re presented with a simple, boring answer and an enthralling one. The enthralling one is far more likely to be untrue.

6. Fandom Toxicity:

The last “question” George received was more of a statement a fan asked to be read. The full text can be found on the Twitter page of the person who submitted it. Essentially, he apologizes to George for the bad behavior of fellow fans who take every opportunity to badger him about his rate of progress, and says we love and appreciate his efforts and the gifts his fiction is to us all. After it was read aloud, the audience gave its biggest cheer since George had walked out on stage and the man himself soaked into the positive energy in the crowd. It’s a message we should all remember.

I met many great fellow fans and, later into the night, at a nearby bar, had a blast celebrating the release of another of our favorite author’s entries into the A Song of Ice and Fire series. The book itself is available now for purchase and, as a fellow fan, I strongly suggest you pick it up. It’s worth it for the beautiful illustrations alone, which were obviously drawn with the utmost care, aside from the amazing writing content.

Game of Thrones prequel set later than initially believed, but still no Targaryens or Dragons, George R. R. Martin reveals

Drogon

You may have noticed George R. R. Martin is doing quite a lot of press lately, with the publication of Fire & Blood, his first volume on the history of House Targaryen. In a few of these interviews, he’s been more forthcoming than usual, revealing the upcoming prequel will be set later in the timeline than we originally thought, and suggesting that Aegon the Conqueror might have been preparing for the White Walkers all along.

EW‘s interview with Martin about the just released Fire & Blood is a wonderful read throughout, but it’s the prequel talk that got our attention the most. When asked about how different Westeros will look in the spin-off, reported to take place 10,000 before Game of Thrones, Martin begins by clarifying we shouldn’t take that date as gospel:

“‘10,000 years’ is mentioned in the novels,” he concedes. “But you also have places where maesters say, ‘No, no, it wasn’t 10,000, it was 5,000.’ Again, I’m trying to reflect real-life things that a lot of high fantasy doesn’t reflect. […] They’re still in the stage of ‘my grandfather told me and his grandfather told him.’ So I think it’s closer to 5,000 years.”

So there you have it! Showrunner Jane Goldman’s Long Night-set prequel will take place a mere half a millennium before our main story. Getting back to the question, though, Martin agrees Westeros will look quite different: “There’s no King’s Landing. There’s no Iron Throne. There are no Targaryens — Valyria has hardly begun to rise yet with its dragons and the great empire that it built. We’re dealing with a different and older world and hopefully that will be part of the fun of the series.” As for Goldman, Martin is full of praise: “[She] is a tremendous talent. She flew into Santa Fe and we spent a week talking about her ideas. She’s going into territory that I haven’t explored very much in the books. I’ve hinted about them. But she’s a major writer, I love her work.”

The interview’s got a few exciting tidbits for book readers as well, such as Martin admitting they may find more than a Targaryen retrospective in Fire & Blood—they may get hints as to the future of A Song of Ice and Fire that he says are “definitely important”, though of course he isn’t eager to share what they are: “I’m not going to flag them. Readers will have to find them and puzzle out whether they’re hints or red herrings.”

In the same vein, on the video above, exclusively published on Esquire, Martin lends credence to a popular theory about Aegon the Conqueror’s reason for taking Westeros and uniting it under his banner: “There is a lot of speculation that in some sense he saw what was coming 300 years later, and wanted to unify the Seven Kingdoms to be better prepared for the threat that he eventually saw coming from the north—the threat that we are dealing with in A Song of Ice and Fire,” Martin coyly suggests.

So, did Aegon the Conqueror see the White Walkers coming?

New Edition of Game of Thrones Monopoly Tabletop Board Game Coming in 2019

Game of Thrones Monopoly

There’s been a Game of Thrones edition of the popular tabletop board game for years, but it’s woefully out of date by now, so HASBRO and HBO have teamed-up again for a re-release of MONOPOLY: GAME OF THRONES, which now includes customized tokens, new iconic properties and graphics infused within the game board.

If you’re interested, get the details below!

The new game tokens are inspired by the honorary sigils of the Great Houses. With them, you will buy, sell, and trade iconic locations from the Seven Kingdoms, building castles and holdfasts in their pursuit to rule the Iron Throne. This upcoming new edition will also feature an Iron Throne card holder that can play the iconic theme song throughout gameplay, which is a first for any version of Monopoly.

Monopoly Board

“HBO has an incredibly robust and passionate fan base for the GAME OF THRONES series, and we’re excited to offer yet another way for these fans to connect with the brand,” said Jonathan Berkowitz, President, Hasbro Brands. “The board, the tokens, the money, and even the game pieces are derived directly from the show, ensuring GAME OF THRONES fans can be transported into the world of Westeros through an engaging and authentic MONOPOLY experience.”

The MONOPOLY: GAME OF THRONES Edition game, designed for fans ages 18 and up, is already available for pre-order at Walmart, GameStop, and Amazon, for a suggested retail price of $29.99. Martin discusses A Song of Ice and Fire and another Fire & Blood excerpt is released

From an undisclosed location (guys, he’s really trying to concentrate on The Winds of Winter), George R.R. Martin discussed the impact of his work on fans and his plans for A Song of Ice and Fire and. In the meantime, a new excerpt from Fire & Blood has been released detailing the events of the Dance of Dragons.

Martin recently spoke with The Wall Street Journal by phone “from a remote mountain hideaway whose location he refuses to disclose” where he’s hard at work on The Winds of Winter.

Yes, yes, for all the jokes made at his expense, Martin is, indeed, set on completing A Song of Ice and Fire. Though the TV show’s timeline has eclipsed the book’s, Martin said he hasn’t let that alter his plans for his series.

“I’m still going to finish it the way I always wanted to finish it, the way it’s been in my head for 25 years now,” he said.

Martin also talked about his love of history which inspired so much of Westeros. He feels that a lot of what drew him to the subject in his youth isn’t reflected in school curriculum nowadays.

“The way history is taught today is more socioeconomic trends and things like that, which…I don’t know if it’s more valid or less valid, but it’s certainly more boring,” he said. “[I read history for] the wars and the betrayals, who stabbed who in the back, who was having an affair with whom, and to me that’s the juicy stuff of history. That’s what makes history fun.”

Martin is aware of the popularity of his work and of the impact it has on his readers … but aspects of it continue to surprise him.

“It astonishes me that today there are tens of thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands, of kids all over the world who know more about the Starks and the Lannisters than they know about the Yorks and Lancasters,” he said, referring to the warring English families that largely inspired their Westerosi counterparts.

While Martin stays in his cabin typing away on The Winds of Winter, we fans have another book of his to look forward to that’s hitting bookstores soon. And we’ve got another excerpt from it. Entertainment Weekly released a sample chapter from Fire & Blood that focuses on events from the Dance of Dragons, namely the attack on the dragon, Sunfyre, and Rhaenyra Targaryen’s successfully sack of King’s Landing.

Here’s my favorite bit:

The would-be dragonslayers easily drove off the cordon of guards who had been left to feed, serve, and protect the dragon, but Sunfyre himself proved more formidable than expected. Dragons are awkward creatures on the ground, and his torn wing left the great golden wyrm unable to take to the air. The attackers expected to find the beast near death. Instead they found him sleeping, but the clash of swords and thunder of horses soon roused him, and the first spear to strike him provoked him to fury […] The number of the dead reached threescore before the survivors fled.

[…] Amongst the slain was Walys Mooton, Lord of Maidenpool. When his body was found a fortnight later by his brother Manfryd, naught remained but charred flesh in melted armor, crawling with maggots. Yet nowhere on that field of ashes, littered with the bodies of brave men and the burned and bloated carcasses of a hundred horses, did Lord Manfryd find King Aegon’s dragon. Sunfyre was gone. Nor were there tracks, as surely there would have been had the dragon dragged himself away. Sunfyre the Golden had taken wing again, it seemed . . . but to where, no living man could say.

“Fire & Blood” excerpt details Aegon, Visenya and Rhaenys’ reign

A4C81742-FF33-4C18-A40A-B3266F6ED7F7

Penguin Random House has released an excerpt from Fire & Blood, George R.R. Martin’s hotly anticipated (*buh-dum ching*) history of House Targaryen.

8E46904C-8C59-45B3-94D4-4310527848EB

The excerpt gives us a peak into the early days of Aegon Targaryen reign over Westeros. It details the construction of King’s Landing, Aegon’s difficulty maintaining a Hand, the creation of the position of Grand Maester and the formation of the Kingsguard … which was Visenya Targaryen’s idea, as it turns out.

Yes, we also get some fascinating insight into Aegon’s sister-wives, Rhaenys and Visenya, who had a bit of a Sansa/Arya dynamic.

Rhaenys had a great love for music (an effective political tool) and affection for the smallfolk. She also established laws limiting the number of times a husband could beat his wife (… yay?).

Visenya, on the other hand, “presented the grim face of a warrior” though she was “not without humor.”

This is my favorite part of the excerpt:

Visenya twice wielded Dark Sister in Aegon’s defense when he was set upon by Dornish cutthroats. Suspicious and ferocious by turns, she trusted no one but her brother.

During the Dornish War, she took to wearing a shirt of mail night and day, even under her court clothes, and urged the king to do the same. When Aegon refused, Visenya grew furious.

“Even with Blackfyre in your hand, you are only one man,” she told him, “and I cannot always be with you.”

When the king pointed out that he had guardsmen around him, Visenya drew Dark Sister and slashed him across the cheek so quickly the guards had no time to react.

“Your guards are slow and lazy,” she said. “I could have killed you as easily as I cut you. You require better protection.” King Aegon, bleeding, had no choice but to agree.

Damn, Visenya.

You can read the entire excerpt at The Hollywood ReporterFire & Blood hits shelves on November 20.
