Israeli actors Joseph Swede and Anja Bukshtein reportedly in Game of Thrones Season 6

YNet, an Israeli news network, has it that a pair of new actors will be joining the cast of Game of Thrones Season 6. Yousef ‘Joe’ Sweid, 39, is an Arab Israeli actor who had a recurring role on NBC’s American Odyssey, a military drama that ran for one season before it was cancelled. Ania Bukstein, 33, has had a number of roles in Israeli movies and TV shows, including The Arbitrator and False Flag.

Also, Sweid is the puppeteer behind Mahboub, a muppet on the Israeli version of Sesame Street. We don’t think that’ll be important for Game of Thrones, but thought we’d mention it.

Anyway, there’s no word on who these actors may be playing, or even if they’re for sure on the show—YNet reports that, like other actors on Game of Thrones, the two have signed confidentiality agreements, so good luck dragging anything out of them. The publication does say that they’ll be in small roles, but that doesn’t really help.

Since the reports came in only recently, we can assume that Sweid and Bukstein have already filmed their scenes. Given their looks, they could be part of a storyline in Essos, but we can’t rule out Dorne or other places in Westeros, either.

Yes, the Winds of Winter cover with the horn is the real one…for now

This cover for The Winds of Winter has been around for a long time, but there’s been persistent uncertainty over whether it’s the official cover for the book or it’s a well-made piece of fan-art. The full cover, if you haven’t seen it:

It certainly looks like a Song of Ice and Fire cover, which is to say that it features a single object in the foreground (a sword in A Game of Thrones, a crown in A Clash of Kings, etc.), and a simple background. Now, George R.R. Martin has confirmed that this is indeed the official cover, at least for the moment. He revealed it when responding to a comment on his Not a Blog.

Though these things have been known to change.

So there you go. It’s real. Another pertinent question: what is that horn? The most likely candidates are the Horn of Joramun, a legendary horn said to be able to bring down the Wall, and Dragonbinder, an object Euron Greyjoy brought back from the ruins of Valyria. Supposedly, it has the power to control dragons.

It seems more likely that this is Dragonbinder, as it matchers the description in A Feast for Crows (shiny, with strange glyphs). Also, Melisandre burned what Mance Rayder claimed was the Horn of Joramun in A Dance with Dragons, so unless it turns up elsewhere, it’s not likely to play a part in The Winds of Winter.

Dragonbinder, on the other hand, is on its way to Meereen in the hands of Victarion Greyjoy, who plans to use it take control of Daenerys’ dragons. If it’s on the cover, we can expect it to play a big role.

One other possibility: George R.R. Martin published The Winds of Winter in 1980 under a pseudonym, and we’ve known about the cover for years:

Entertainment Weekly tournament pits Game of Thrones fans against other fandoms

Entertainment Weekly’s Fanuary is a month-long celebration dedicated to pop culture fans and their fandoms. If you think Game of Thrones has one of the best around, now’s your chance to vote for it during Fanuary’s epic cross-fandom style tournament. The tournament groups pop culture fandoms into four categories: TV, movies, music, and digital influences (whatever that means).

The tournament kicks off with a round featuring 64 pieces of pop culture, with Game of Thrones matched up against Sherlock. Thrones is currently edging the BBC show out, but by a relatively slim margin. Be sure to get your vote in before January 5th, when the first round ends. If Thrones advances, it’ll take on the winner of a face-off between The Walking Dead and The X-Files.

In terms of overall votes, Harry Potter is the current leader—it’s outpacing its competitor, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, by an embarrassing amount. Game of Thrones is ranked 26th, behind Teen Wolf and Survivor. Voting takes place each week until the champion is crowned early next month. If you think Thrones has a superior fandom to Sherlock, Teen Wolf, and Survivor, don’t forget to keep voting for it every week.

Lastly, if you consider yourself a Thrones mega fan, Entertainment Weekly has a couple of other Fanuary competitions you may want to check out, including best fanfiction, fan confession, and extreme fan. Monday Morning Humor: Hitler Freaks Out Over Winds of Winter Delay

With the delay of The Winds of Winter the only major story of the week, until HBO and the Game of Thrones production get on that and start dropping more promotions for Season 6, it was inevitable that the memes would begin. And there is no more popular meme when something terrible happens than to go that famous clip from 2004’s Downfall, and re-caption Hitler all over again so that this time he’s melting down over whatever it is you need him to.

To be fair, this is one of the better versions I’ve seen. And I’ve seen Hitler freak out over a whole lot of things since the Downfall parody trend started in 2008. It helps that whoever made this has been paying attention in the Game of Thrones off season to the Season 6 filming news and rumors.

Meanwhile, in sad-but-funny, FOX NFL Sports Sunday should either hire someone who actually watches the show, or not bother. Really.

Over on the BBC, they’re currently running a six part series on the famous novel War and Peace. Despite the huge cast, it still managed not to cast anyone who was involved with Game of Thrones, and yet won int he ratings anyway. But fans noted that the promotions, which focused on what a huge novel the 1869 novel was, should maybe consider that what was considered long in 1869 would be considered a drop in the bucket by today’s standards.

WiC Weekly: December 27-January 2

It was an eventful week in the world of Game of Thrones. Here are are the past week’s top stories:

The hype for Season 6 has begun; Entertainment Weekly released a photo of Bran Stark, returned to the show after a season-long absence and looking pretty sharp.

EW followed up the photo with an interview with Isaac Hempstead Wright, who’s played Bran since the start of the show. This is the first interview with a cast member based entirely around Game of Thrones. The promotional push has begun.

Martin gives us all a big update as to his progress on The Winds of Winter. It might not be the best news in the world, but so far people have been largely understanding.

Next, we take a thorough look at how Jon Snow’s story conforms to the Hero’s Journey, an archetype that turns up again and again in literature. On top of being a fun thought exercise, this analysis provides some clues about the character’s future.

We do a little theory housekeeping at look at the notion that Westeros connects to Essos through the Lands of Always Winter. Use your imaginations, people!

We may have to wait awhile for The Winds of Winter, but this website will allow you to take a deep dive into the sample chapters that have already been released, along with the rest of the A Song of Ice and Fire novels.

Bran is quickly becoming one of the more fascinating aspects of the new season. We speculate on what he might get up to in the new year.

It’s a new year, so it seemed like a good time to discuss our hopes and fears for Game of Thrones Season 6.

Incidentally, the vote is WAY lopsided on this one, but I suppose that’s to be expected.

Christmas is over, but we revisited what a bunch of cast members did during the holidays.

And in what might be the least surprising news ever, Game of Thrones is awarded the title of ‘Most Pirated Show of the Year.’

George R.R. Martin Thanks Fans for Supporting Him

Whether of not it upset you to read George R.R. Martin’s final post on New Year’s Day that The Winds of Winter was not finished, nor would it be prior to the airing of Season 6, it was hard to miss how much the failure to make this deadline was distressing to the author himself. There were a lot of people counting on this, from editors and publishers, to producers at HBO and of course, all the fans. And though many of those in the final category were angry and upset, it seemed like on the whole, over at NotABlog, the comments were compassionate. Many outlets ran pieces on the order of “Martin’s Book is Delayed and It’s Ok,” and on Twitter many rehashed Neil Gaiman’s arguments from years back, under the exact hashtag you would expect.

Last night Martin posted a thanks to his fans for the outpouring of support. He had clearly been bracing for the worst, and finding that not everyone was ready to start ringing the SHAME bell was heartening. He says he will be closing comments on the announcement post, but mostly because they are becoming too unwieldy, and with his minions on holiday, he still have dozens of screened ones to go through. But he was clearly touched.

I cannot tell you how much I appreciate all the kind words and good wishes.

Twitter Is Very Unhappy With George R.R. Martin Today

The Winds of Winter is nowhere near finished and people are…disappointed.
