Game of Thrones Shut Out At People’s Choice Awards

Perhaps breaking and tying Emmy records left and right a few months ago meant that Game of Thrones met the hardware quota for the year. Only days before the Golden Globes, where it has only the most perfunctory of nominations for Season 5, Game of Thrones found itself shut out in a far lower echelon of accolades, the People’s Choice Awards.

In some cases, one could understand, like the hilariously specific category of “Favorite Cable TV Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show.” Though Game of Thrones might have once had this category all to itself, it is now the grand dame of the shows it was up against, including Teen Wolf and Outlander, the latter of which walked away with the prize. In the corresponding Favorite SciFi/Fantasy Actress, Caitriona Balfe of Outlander also took home the prize over Game of Thrones‘ Emilia Clarke. But in the much broader category of “Favorite TV Show,” the loss was far more insulting, where the terrible nerdface unfunny comedy The Big Bang Theory won instead.

Perhaps informed ahead of who would be landing the prize, Game of Thrones only made the paltriest of showings on the red carpet. Clarke did not attend, and though one might make jokes about Dany sending Missandei as her representative, it did feel a touch correct, with Nathalie Emmanuel there to take the brunt of reporters demanding Season 6 spoilers and opinions on The Winds of Winter delay. Speaking to the Daily Mail, Emmanuel countered that she was refusing to read the books because she never wants the story to end.

The only other Game of Thrones star to attend the show was Natalie Dormer, who is the middle of promoting the heck out of her new horror movie, The Forest, one of the few places where you can see her in something that does not require period clothing. (To that end she was there as an awards presenter, in order to ensure her showing up.) Amusingly enough, both Natalie and Nathalie wore variations on the same see-thru top pantsuit/jumpsuit trend, which suggests that their stylists did not coordinate in the slightest.

Dormer’s is clearly the better tailored of the two, with Emmanuel’s pants pooling at her feet, but, perhaps unsurprisingly, neither put much effort into this appearance.

…Jon Snow’s resurrection and subsequent adventures. And it wasn’t even close. It wasn’t even close.

I mean…good god. Over half the votes were for a single storyline. As commenter Phil Necro said:

The question should be this:

What are you most looking forward to in Game of Thrones Season 6 besides Jon Snow’s possible resurrection and marching ”south”?

Sounds about right.

This shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, though. Theories about Jon’s potential resurrection have dominated the Game of Thrones news cycle since Season 5 ended, and it makes sense that people want vindication. As commenter Ellen put it:

I’m with everyone else, I’m looking forward to what happens to Jon Snow. I’m also curious if we’ll finally get any sort of reunion between some of the Stark siblings. Jon, Sansa, and Rickon all seem to be in the same area so it’s possible.

Man, it would be cathartic to see some of the Stark kids back together. They’ve all been through a world of crap since splitting up, and I’d love to see them commiserate with each other. Even if the reunion involves Rickon, the least developed of the Starks, I’d still be eager to see it.

Jon may have taken the lion’s share of votes, but people were interested in the return of Bran Stark as well, although part of that interest seems to be spurred by the fact that he’ll likely use his powers to give us a look at what happened at the Tower of Joy toward the end of Robert’s Rebellion. Per popular theory, this scene will tie back into Jon Snow’s backstory, so all roads lead to Jon.

King Kunta made an interesting comment about Bran:

Seeing Bran again should be cool, but they have to be careful with how fantasy-like the show starts to get because I can see plenty of people walking away from a political drama show to one that is now about dragons, white walking zombies, and wargs. Hope they know what they’re doing.

I think this is a salient point. We’re entering a new era for the show, one where magic elements like dragons, White Walkers, and weirwood visions are going to become a bigger part of the narrative. Commenters like Andrew are afraid that the more fantastical elements will push the scheming and politicking into the background, and while I’m as eager as anyone to see those uppity southron lords get a load of the White Walkers, the political and historical angles were distinguished Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire from other fantasy sagas. Will a battle for the dawn between humanity and a race of ice monsters make it too much like other good vs evil stories?

We’ll have a better idea come April, which is a few scant months away. It’s all happening, and sooner than you may realize.

Natalie Dormer avoids Game of Thrones spoilers and talks nearly passing on Margaery

Natalie Dormer is making the rounds lately to promote her new film The Forest and is talking Game of Thrones in the meanwhile.

The actress appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Tuesday, and explained to the host that she only reads the portions of the GoT scripts that are “relevant to Margaery and Highgarden and King’s Landing.” She says she does this, “So when the show airs, I’m sitting on the couch watching it like you.”

“I’ll be sitting in the hair and makeup trailer, and someone will show up and I’ll be like, ‘What are you doing here?’” Dormer tells Kimmel. “Oh my god, you’re back? I gotta leave.”

Dormer also admits she spent a lot of time in Spain this year, which is no surprise to fans who have been following filming news. Photos from last September, taken in Girona, Spain, revealed spoilers from the upcoming season involving Margaery Tyrell.

Dormer also spoke to Den of Geek about her reservations in taking on the role of Margaery, whom many have compared to another character the actress is well-known for- Anne Boleyn of The Tudors.

She considered not taking the part of Margaery due to the similarities, but GoT showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff convinced her with their trust that her characterizations would be different enough.

“In the end, they were right,” Dormer says to Den of Geek. “[Margaery and Anne] did turn out to be two totally different women. They want to be queen for different reasons and also, their demise of being thrown into a jail cell has definitely been played very differently. So, I think I had real trepidation and concern about doing that… [but] I think, if I believe what fans have told me in hindsight, they were right. They read as different people completely.”

Natalie Dormer maybe kinda sorta lets a Season 6 spoiler slip

Natalie Dormer is still out in force promoting her new horror film The Forest, and interviews are still using the opportunity to ply her for information about Game of Thrones. Check out her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, where she may have—possibly, a little bit—given something away about Season 6.

SPOILER WARNING

Okay, so what’s the new news? Let’s parse it out.

• Filming on Season 6 has wrapped. No, we’ve known that for a while.
• Natalie Dormer spent a lot of time filming in Spain this year. No, we covered that back when it happened, although a couple of outlets are reporting this as a hint that Margaery may get out of prison in Season 6. But really, we’ve known she would get sprung since September, when she was seen filming outdoor scenes in Girona, Spain.
• Jon Snow may not stay dead. Well, duh. Also, points for the pun about Season 6 representing “fresh clean snow” for the cast and crew, since there’s no longer any source material to go by.
• 2:02—Dormer “only read[s] the scripts that are relevant to Margaery and Highgarden and King’s Landing.” Okay, maybe we can work with that.

Admittedly, this could be nothing, but some think that Dormer’s hasty addition of “and King’s Landing” to the list of storylines she pays attention to was an attempt to distract from a slip-up she made: she said she only reads scripts that are “relevant…to Highgarden.” Does this mean that Highgarden, the seat of House Tyrell, may show up in Season 6?

It’s something we’ve thought about. Originally, we theorized that the bucolic Castillo de Santa Florentina might stand in for Highgarden, but it was later revealed to be the set for Horn Hill, the seat of House Tarly. Still, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the castle couldn’t have served more than one purpose. I mean, tell me this place wouldn’t make a perfect Highgarden.

Plus, George R.R. Martin has hinted in past interviews that he may write scenes set at Highgarden, so it’s not out of the question that it could turn up on the show.

Either that, or Dormer just said “Highgarden” to indicate that she pays attention to storylines for other characters who hail from the area, like Loras and Olenna. Or she said it just because. Like I said, there may be nothing to this, but when it comes to Game of Thrones spoilers, there’s no molehill so small that can’t be made into a mountain.

This week, we learned the hard truth: The Winds of Winter is not coming. At least, it’s not coming before Game of Thrones Season 6. But does that mean we’re going to go into the next season blind and unaware of anything that will happen to our beloved characters?

Are you kidding me? This is Game of Thrones. They film in three different countries, on location out in the open, with hundreds of fans showing up to get pictures and footage of the proceedings. Of course we know what’s going to happen in Season 6… well, sorta. Read on to plunge into the spoilers.
