Jon Snow and Lyanna Mormont win HBO’s GoT Party election

It’s been a long campaign (well, the length of September), but HBO has declared a victor in its GoT Party election. With 1,601,017 ballots cast, the Game of Thrones-loving public have elected Jon Snow and running mate Lyanna Mormont as the president and vice president of Westeros…or something. The results:

As you can see, Jon and Lyanna didn’t run away with the election. It was a pretty heated race throughout. In the first week of voting, Jon was even trailing both Daenerys and Littlefinger, and didn’t establish a proper lead until the final week. Cersei, naturally, was dead last the entire time. Blowing up churches is not good for your public image.

According to the GoT Party website, Jon Snow released a statement after his win.

Winter has come and the war between the living and the dead will not end swiftly. We have cast aside the differences between Crow and Wildling, bastard and trueborn, Northerner or Southerner, to fight a common enemy.

We have seen that we cannot survive the Long Night divided. Unity is a necessity to meet the challenge of our time, but it is only the beginning.

“The Long Night is coming, and the dead come with it.”

Of course, it’s easier to talk about unity than to practice it. It remains to be seen whether Jon’s message of togetherness resonates in the south.

But to his credit, Jon never went negative during the campaign, unlike Cersei and Littlefinger. His first ad focused on his tough rhetoric, while his second centered around his popularity with the average voter.

Still, getting power and keeping it are two different things, as this show likes to remind us. Will Jon Snow be able to move Westeros forward? Check back in four years…or when someone attempts a coup, whichever comes first.

Pedro Pascal Talks How He Schemed His Way Into Game of Thrones

The new season of Narcos is out on Netflix. That means that it’s once again time for an actor whose character was very popular during his time on Game of Thrones (but is now very dead) to find themselves in the awkward position of using the popularity of a past project to promote on that is not quite so world wide phenomenon level. In this case, it’s Pedro Pascal, who’s portrayal of Oberyn Martell may have the largest popularity-to-actual minutes on screen ratio of any character except Bella Ramsay’s Lyanna Stark.

Oberyn Martell was a flame the burned bright when he swept in to King’s Landing at the beginning of Season 4. By the time he foudn himself with a flattened head at the end of episode 8, his popularity has sky rocketed. He won every off season poll he was in that year. Fans couldn’t get enough of him. (His popularity with fans is to blame for why the show changed course and added Dorne on screen in Season 5, much like his popularity in the books caused Martin to make the same mistake in book 4, A Feast For Crows, but nevermind.)

It also made Pascal a household name. It was a very lucky casting for him. But as it turns out, luck didn’t have much to do with it. Last night, on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Pedro Pascal told the story of how he landed the role of Oberyn Martell on Game of Thrones, and it turns out he pulled strings.

He had the part, and he was supposed to know, and he didn’t know. Perhaps the phone call should have said that then, instead of, I know things, but I don’t know things. (By the way, if that’s not a conversation Jon Snow has has with himself in a philosophical manner, then life simply isn’t fair.)
