Game of Thrones v The Night Manager at National Television Awards 2017

It’s a new year, and a new round of the 2016 awards season, and the National Television Awards are getting underway across the pond. It’s Game of Thrones versus Tom Hiddleston in The Night Manager as voting opens in the UK for the television centered awards program.

As is usual for the UK based program, Game of Thrones is the only US based show to make the list for Best Drama. (It is after all, supposed to be the best of their nation.) It goes up against BBC’s The Night Manager, which was a monster hit over there, though did not actually do so well over here in the US, despite starring Tom Hiddleston, one half of the short-lived Hiddleswift couple (though personally I preferred the nickname SWOKI.)

Other competition includes the never seems to go away BBC show Casualty, ITV’s Cold Feet as well as Happy Valley, which has the bizarre sight of Neville Longbottom as a serial killer.

Voting for the program opened this morning and will run until 12 noon on Wednesday, January 25, 2017. (The awards program itself airs that evening.)

Perhaps the voting British public can make up for what is sure to be a snubbing at the Golden Globes this coming weekend for the program. But like at the Golden Globes, Game of Thrones is only nominated for Best Drama. No cast members are nominated for Supporting Actor or Actress. (Due to rule sof how long characters must be on screen, no one in the Game of Thrones cast ever seems to be eligible beyond the Supporting category.)

This is clearly a travesty. We can all agree that if Kit Harington were nominated, he and his hair would surely crush all comers. Except perhaps Aidan Turner, whose hair in Poldark is the only real competition he would face. Perhaps they can  have a hair off? A girl can dream.

See Kristian Nairn’s audition tape for the role of Hodor, costarring a random child

Audition tapes are fascinating, particularly when they feature Game of Thrones cast members. Some make you wonder what the casting director saw in the actor, while others leave no doubt as to why they were hired.

Kristian Nairn’s audition tape lies somewhere in the middle. In this video, Nairn gives us his best Hodor, complete with a sampling of the gentle giant’s eponymous dialogue, ambling gait, and the strength that makes him such an asset to Bran and crew as they traveled north of the Wall. But it doesn’t all go as planned.

On the one hand, Nairn nails Hodor’s name (the director of the tape pronounces it “Hador”) and delivery. He also has Hodor’s shambling walk down. It’s pretty close to what we eventually see on the small screen—Nairn claims it’s naturally close to his day-to-day walk.

Nairn seems to have a little trouble when demonstrating Hodor’s prodigious strength, though. Maybe he should have practiced lifting the table above his head? Then again, the end of the video proves that most people couldn’t even think of lifting it, let alone lifting it gracefully. And he’s got no problem lifting that little kid who’s standing in for Bran, though, who looks bigger than Isaac Hempstead Wright was for the first few seasons.

Either way, its fun to take a look at one of our favorite characters in the making, and to see that Nairn has several stars above his right eye.

Overall, this is one instance where Game of Thrones casting director Nina Gold nailed it. RIP Hodor.

Tom Brady taunts the Miami Dolphins with Game of Thrones memes, and other celeb news

Today in celebrity-related ephemera, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady had a good time posting Game of Thrones memes on his Facebook page, both before and after the Patriots faced off against the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami yesterday. Here he is taunting the Dolphins before the game started…

…and the game, which the Patriots won.

As you can see, Brady is the Night King and has frozen two dolphins. As NBC Boston points out, “there are actually quite a few similarities between Brady and the Night’s King. They both love playing in the snow. Everyone hates them. And they always win.”

Moving on, Iain Glen has been playing the lovesick Jorah Mormont for six years on Game of Thrones. He’ll get to be a little closer to the spotlight in Sky 1’s Delicious. According to Daily Record, Glenn plays a chef/foodie named Leo, who is torn between his wife and his ex. According to him, the job practically pays for itself:

I did one scene where I was making love surrounded by the most wonderful [tidbits] and morsels and dips. And I really did think, ‘Am I actually being paid to do this?’

I’m not so sure I’m ready to watch Ser Jorah get it on surrounded by a bunch of food, and this looks like a really bad telenovela, but if it’s something the people want to see, who am I to get in the way of that?

Also, a bunch of Game of Thrones cast members made TC Candler’s (surprisingly popular) list of “The 100 Most Beautiful Faces of 2016,” with Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) at #100, Nathalie Emmanuel (Missandei) at #42 and Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) at #18.

Good for them.

And in the less popular “100 Most Handsome Faces of 2016” list, Kit Harington (Jon Snow) came in at #8 while Michiel Huisman (Daario Naharis) lands at #1. Hm.

Oh look, there’s Tom Brady again. What a coincidence!

WiC Weekly: December 26-31

Happy New Year, it’s time once again for WiC Weekly, where we bring you the biggest and best Game of Thrones-related news stories from the past week. Let’s get started.

There wasn’t much in the way of Game of Thrones Season 7 filming news, Nina Gold, the casting director for the show did respond to the question of lack of diversity among the cast.

To no one’s surprise, Game of Thrones is once again the most pirated show of the year.

We discuss 10 Game of Thrones prequel ideas we’d like to see happen.

Goerge R.R. Martin lamented the tragic loss of Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher, as well as the passing of Watership Down author, Richard Adams.

We took a look at the Game of Thrones cast and compared what they looked like before they landed their superstar roles. Just look at the classic beauty of Diana Rigg.

Using the same API as Google Maps, this interactive map of Westeros and Essos is pretty cool.

Here is a delightful and wonderful Game of Thrones year in review. Seriously, you won’t be able to read this without smiling or laughing out loud.

Can Melisandre be compared to the Arthurian Morgan Le Fay? We take a deep dive.

Sansa, Lyanna Mormont, and Game of Thrones Season 6, in general, appear on more lists honoring the Best TV of 2016.

That’s it for this week, we hope you have a safe and prosperous 2017. And hey, at least we’re one month closer to Game of Thrones Season 7, right?
