See Another Major Character Return (Video)

How many reunions can one season hold? Game of Thrones seems to be out to test that number, as once again, we the audience have been reunited with yet another character unseen since Season 3. We’ve had lots of characters who disappeared that year come back this season, from Rickon and Osha at the beginning of the year to Walder Frey and Edmure Tully last week. Now Game of Thrones has brought back one of the most arguably important characters and storylines that it dropped for time these last few years.

SPOILERS AHEAD

Are you ready? Hey are you ready for this?
Are you hanging on the edge of your seat?
Out of the doorway the spoilers rip
To the sound of the beat

Spoilers! I hate spoilers! Even my horse hates spoilers.

When we last saw Ser Brynden Tully, known to all and sundry as “The Blackfish,” he had just proven that even in Westeros, there is no better thing than a well-timed bathroom break. His answering the call of nature during Edmure’s tragic nuptials to a Frey allowed him to be out of the dining room just at the moment it was being locked  and missing out on all the blood and stabbing that went into the moment known as “The Red Wedding.” it also allowed him to be far enough away that when he did realize something had gone very south indeed, and it wasn’t Edmure on his new bride, he had time to get on a horse and get away.

Now, this is where the show and books differ. In the books, the Blackfish rounds up his men, gets their butts back to the Tully homestead, bars the damn gates and thus commences the long siege of Riverrun. The show, on the other hand, did not allow him to be quite so efficient–partly because they weren’t ready for a long siege at Riverrun just yet. (Besides, having The Blackfish standing up to the Lannisters all this time would have made him a natural place for Sansa to go when she and Littlefinger left the Eyrie, instead of having her go off and marry Bolton–or at least go there after she escaped, instead of North to Jon Snow. By having The Blackfish only come into play now gives an excuse why he wouldn’t have been a factor earlier, and why Jaime is only being sent their know to quell the siege, instead of last season, like he was supposed to.

And he is a *very* impressive return!

Jaime has a very difficult man on his hands…..
