Sapochnik Nominated for Directors Guild Award for Game of Thrones

The Directors Guild of America announced their selections yesterday for their 69th annual awards, celebrating outstanding director achievements for the past year. Game of Thrones directorial standout Miguel Sapochnik has made the competitive short list for the Dramatic Television Series category. Sapochnik’s nomination recognizes his work in the staggering season six episode, “Battle of the Bastards.”

The other Dramatic Series nominees include:

  • The Duffer Brothers, for Stranger Things, “Chapter One: The Vanishing of Will Byers” (Netflix)
  • Ryan Murphy, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, “From the Ashes of Tragedy” (FX)
  • Jonathan Nolan, Westworld, “The Original” (HBO)
  • John Singleton, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, “The Race Card” (FX)

This is Sapochnik’s first Directors Guild Award nomination. A Game of Thrones director won the prize last year, with David Nutter taking home the award for his work on the season five finale “Mother’s Mercy.” Perhaps another GoT director will win this year too! With the technical achievements of “Battle of the Bastards,” and the widespread acclaim for Sapochnik’s work (including an Emmy for his directing of the episode), Game of Thrones is a major contender in the category.
