Costume designer Michele Clapton takes us behind the scenes of season 7 in new video

Michele Clapton has been designing costumes for Game of Thrones since the very beginning. By this point, she’s established the sartorial look of all of Westeros and Essos, and she’s not finished. HBO has uploaded a new video where Clapton talks about her work, and gives us a few peeks behind the scenes of Game of Thrones season 7. Check it out:

It’s fascinating to hear how an artist like Clapton approaches her work. Even more fascinating are the close-up looks we get of the costumes in season 7, plus some incidental details. Let’s take a closer look.

  • The shoulderpads on Cersei’s new Dark Queen gown are serious indeed:

  • I can’t quite tell if this is Jaime in some new, black-and-red casual wear or if it’s Nikolaj Coster-Waldau just hanging out.

  • Looking at Daenerys’ new Invading Conqueror outfit in this light, you can more clearly see the red accents in her black ensemble. Fly those Targaryen colors, Dany.

  • This is one of the more interesting shots in the video: Samwell Tarly in the library at the Citadel, standing on a stool to reach some out-of-reach book. And notice the green screen on the ceiling — the library is so huge they need special effects to create it.

  • This is almost certainly Tyrion Lannister on the beaches of Dragonstone. If he gets sand in those boots they’re probably gonna be a paid to get off.

  • Daenerys, Missandei, and Grey Worm on the movie with an escort of Unsullied soldiers:

  • When it visited the season 7 set, the Toronto Sun noted that the production had built a new set to serve as Cersei’s bedchamber. Odds are this is it:

  • Hey, look: the Hound is in season 7, and he’s having a good time with fake snow.

  • The Mountain, sans helmet, looking imposing in his new Kingsguard armor.

  • Tormund Giantsbane stands up during a meeting in Winterfell’s Great Hall. Notice Maester Wolkan, last seen unhappily serving the Boltons in season 6, on the right. And Sansa and Brienne are on the left. Where is Podrick?

  • Sophie Turner filming a scene in what looks like the Winterfell crypts:

  • Finally, in a playful moment, Sophie Turner chucks a snowball. There’s nothing to read into here — it’s just funny.

We’ll get even better looks at these costumes when season 7 debuts on July 16.
