Off Broadway Gets the Game of Thrones Treatment – An Exclusive Interview with the Musical’s Sansa!

Sansa and JoffreyWill Choi as Joffrey Baratheon and Allison Lobel as Sansa Stark

Here’s a first, Game of Thrones fans. GOT is headed to NY, making its off-Broadway debut. While it’s unaffiliated with HBO, is there no medium of entertainment in which the GOT bulldozer won’t dominate? First a NY Times bestselling book series, then a revolutionary TV show, which led to a soundtrack so popular it spawned a national tour for its composer – What’s next? Apparently musical theater…Who knew?!

As someone with a background in and wallet-emptying adoration of all things musical theater, this news excites me enormously. And even more personally, I’m lucky enough to know Allison Lobel, the incredible actor who has played Sansa since the musical’s inception, and who took the time to chat with me about this awesome production.

An uproarious musical comedy parody of HBO’s tentpole drama series, Game of Thrones – The Rock Musical: An UnAuthorized Parody follows the saga of Eddard ‘Ned’ Stark as he battles tap dancing direwolves, an evil inbred prince and a smattering of other characters too hot and raunchy for network television. Will Ned climb his way to the Iron Throne? Or will he lose his head in the process?

With a synopsis like this, who wouldn’t be stoked to see it? It’s said to be a real crowd pleaser.

From the creators of Lost: The Musical and the critically acclaimed Once Upon a Time: The Rock OperaGame of Thrones: The Rock Musical features 13 original songs which will have audiences on their feet with toes tapping and hands clapping… provided they still have both of their hands. Spoiler alert – this show will have heads rolling… with laughter!

“All Men Must Laugh…A happy smile never left my face.” – BlogCritics.org

“GOT: The Musical is all that and a bag of Hodor” – Film School Rejects

“You can look forward to a Dothraki love song, a full body tap-dancing direwolf, and more than one reference to a certain politician.” – The Hollywood Reporter

For a Watchers on the Wall exclusive interview, I asked Lobel a few questions about her tenure working with Game of Thrones – The Rock Musical: An UnAuthorized Parody. She even dressed up in costume for our chat:

So as you can see, via the extraordinarily gracious, and impossibly kind Allison, the show sounds like a ton of fun, and I can’t wait to get my tickets! Luckily, we’ve been provided with a link to sample some of the music. I can’t decide if I’m more excited for ‘Dothraki Love Song’ or ‘The Mad Queen: Cersei’s Lament!’

Game of Thrones – The Rock Musical: An Unauthorized Parody officially premiered in February 2017 at the Macha Theatre in West Hollywood, where 40 performances of rave reviews led to to the show being invited to Comic-Con in San Diego this past July, where its eight performances reportedly sold out.
