The Game Revealed: Go deep behind the scenes of Season 6, Episodes 1 and 2

HBO may have tried to keep things under wraps during the filming of Game of Thrones Season 6, but it seems determined to give us plenty of behind-the-scenes content now that the season is underway. Below, check out the first edition of The Game Revealed, a documentary series that will go deep behind the scenes of Season 6.

There will be five episodes in all. By the looks of it, each of them will cover two episodes of the season. Here, the likes of writer David Benioff, director Jeremy Podeswa, actress Carice van Houten (Melisandre), and many more talk about filming “The Red Woman” and “Home.”

There’s a lot to dig into here, but let’s hit some of the highlights.

  • David Benioff describes Jon Snow’s state of mind upon his resurrection ominously: “I was so warm and comfortable and everything was peaceful and now you’ve pulled me into the cold, bright world.” Will Jon be none too pleased to be back?
  • You gotta love the shots of actor Ian Whyte, who plays Wun Wun, in costume before the special effects department has given him a couple of extra feet. Also, I didn’t realize the production did such extensive pre-visualization for certain scenes. That mock-up of the wildling invasion of Castle Black was detailed.
  • Here’s prosthetics director Barrie Gower’s pic for favorite scene of the whole season: the reveal that Melisandre is actually much older than she looks. Can we take this to mean that this is as good as the prosthetics get in Season 6? If so, that should do.
  • Apparently, filming that Balon-Euron scene was murder, what with the rain and the cold and the swiveling bridge. At least it turned out well.
  • The production has a name for the scene where Tyrion encounters Rhaegal and Viserion for the first time: dragon daycare.
