Introducing the 2018 Ringo Awards Jury

The Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards is an annual celebration of the creativity, skill, and fun of comics. The awards will be presented on Saturday, September 29, 2018 as part of the fan- and pro-favorite convention, The Baltimore Comic-Con. The Ringo Awards is currently in the midst of the 2018 nomination process, which is inclusive of fans and comic book professionals alike. Please submit your nominations before voting closes at midnight on May 30, 2018.

The Jury

An esteemed jury of comics professionals will participate in the nomination process, selecting favorite works in over 20 categories. The 2018 jury was chosen as a representative cross-section of the comic book industry, with members representing seasoned and venerated educators, retailers, press, and creators across numerous genres.

Michael Cavna

Michael Cavna is a cartoonist and creator of The Washington Post’s Eisner-nominated Comic Riffs column. He is also emcee and co-programmer of the Graphic Novel Pavilion events at the Library of Congress’s annual National Book Festival. In 2017, Cavna’s work was honored by the National Headliner Awards and the national Society for Features Journalism. A San Francisco native and UCSD alum, Cavna also wrote the Harvey Award-nominated prose for the Eisner Award-nominated anthology book Team Cul de Sac: Cartoonists Draw the Line at Parkinson’s. His viral “Wise Up” cartoon launched the #Draw4Atena campaign on behalf of the jailed Iranian artist-activist Atena Farghadani, and his updated-monthly cartoon marked the 545-day detention of American-Iranian journalist Jason Rezaian. Those cartoon campaigns were cited by the National Press Club, the Poynter Institute and the Cartoonist Rights Network International. Cavna has created artwork and features for five syndicates, including Universal Uclick/Andrews McMeel. Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz once told Cavna at a black-tie awards dinner: “You do funny things”; to this day, he does not know for sure whether Schulz was referring to Cavna’s syndicated comic Warped or to his tragically askew cummerbund.

Marty Grosser

Marty Grosser is the Editor of Diamond Comic Distributors’ PREVIEWS catalog, and has been involved with the publication since its inception in October of 1988. Before that, he started in the comics industry in the summer of 1981 as a counterman and Assistant Manager for Northern California’s Comics & Comix retail chain. In 1986, he left C&C for comics distributor, Bud Plant, Inc., where he worked in the Customer Service department before becoming the writer of BUD PLANT’S QUICKLIST (the catalog precursor to PREVIEWS) in 1987. This position eventually lead to his move to Maryland in 1988 following the purchase of BPI’s West Coast distribution network by Diamond Comic Distributors.

Karla Marsh-Southern

Karla Marsh-Southern is the Event and Exhibitor Coordinator for Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find and the Heroes Convention located in Charlotte, NC. She has served the Heroes Convention for over 14 years, and has done so in a full-time capacity for the past six. She began attending the Heroes Convention 13 days before her actual birth in June of 1982 when her mother agreed to accompany her brother to Charlotte’s first “Comic Book Convention”. She has attended every Heroes Convention since, with this year’s show marking her 36th consecutive Heroes Convention. Learning to read using Wonder Woman and Batman comics in the early 1980’s, Karla is an avid reader of series from across all genres. She is also a life-long fan of all things Masters of the Universe and has assisted in the management of the He-Man and She-Ra-themed Convention, Power-Con based out of Los Angeles, CA.

Rob Stull

Rob Stull is an accomplished illustrator, curator, teacher, penciler, inker, designer, and creator of comic books. In addition to working through his own studio, Ink on Paper, he has worked over two decades for every major publisher in the industry, including Marvel and DC Comics, where his projects include: Spider-Man Adventures, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Iron Man, X-Force, Wolverine, Nightwing, 52, Firestorm, and more. He was a member of the original Tellos creative team with Todd Dezago, Mike Wieringo, and Paul Mounts, and inked Mike’s pencils on the initial series run published by Image Comics. He also inked the covers for the Mike Wieringo Tellos Tribute books and drew a chapter in Volume 1. He created and curated Sequential Art: The Next Step, a 10-year traveling exhibition spotlighting the work of African American comic book artists and their contributions to the industry and popular culture, and his work has been exhibited in galleries throughout the United States. He is featured in the ground-breaking books Black Comix: African American Independent Comics, Art and Culture and The History of American Graffiti. “I have always believed that all art is relative,” says Stull. “Sequential Art is a storytelling medium, but most visual art is telling a story of some kind.”

Gus Vazquez

Gus Vazquez is an illustrator who has worked in nearly every field, including comic books, trading cards, storyboarding for music videos, commercials, animation and film, logo design, character and toy design, and more. He started his career in comic books working as an assistant to comic book artists Adam Pollina on X-Force, and Kevin McGuire on Trinity Angels. He got his first solo gig at Marvel Comics drawing the covers and interiors for Sunfire and Big Hero 6, the series that introduced the characters featured in Disney’s Oscar winning Big Hero 6. He has worked on such Marvel titles as Deadpool, X-Force, Spider-Man, What If? Civil War, What If? Back in Black, The Official Handbook if the Marvel Universe, and more. For DC, he has worked on such titles as Green Lantern, JLA, Blue Beetle, and most recently on Flash, Suicide Squad, and Green Arrow. Gus was the artist on several issues of Claudio Sanchez’s (of rock music group Coheed and Cambria) The Amory Wars, and was instrumental in helping bring together the creative team of his friends, David Atchison (writer) and Tony Shasteen (illustrator), and his niece, film and TV actress Rosario Dawson on 12 Gauge’s The O.C.T. Currently, Gus has been working for DC Comics on The Sasquatch Detective, a backup story which can be found in the pages of Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles, as well as DMC (Daryl Makes Comics) and on La Borinqueña. He is also working on his creator-owned book, Fang.

Exclusive Sweeping Look at Winterfell Set; King’s Landing Set Closed off and Ready for Season 8 Filming & New Fighting Scene

Winterfell 703 Arya Arrival Zoom

Today we bring you a multimedia cocktail of Game of Thrones season eight filming news! Below the cut, you’ll see a new sword fight scene, the King’s Landing set being readied for imminent filming, and an exclusive in-depth look at the Winterfell set as it stands after filming ended — from the castle itself to its grounds that so recently saw battle. Though the spoilers are light, spoilers they remain, so if you don’t know anything about the last season of Game of Thrones and you want to keep it that way, do not read on!

The following photos, sent to us yesterday by one of our sources, offer the best look yet at Moneyglass. Filming at the all-new, bigger-than-ever Winterfell set concluded last month, but in these photos you can still the stronghold in detail, together with the surrounding grounds, which is where one of the season’s main battles will take place:

Now: more Magheramorne news! Since the crew appears to be on Easter break, GOTlikeLocations shared a video from last Wednesday, showing five cast members or stuntmen practicing a sword fight at the green screen set. Judging by choreography, this is likely not part of a battle, but a small fight scene between a handful of characters:

Can you tell who they are? Here is a closer and more stable look at the sword fight:

Speaking of green screens, a few weeks ago we learned one such screen would be built outside the King’s Landing set at Titanic Studios, right to one side of the city walls. Now, thanks to A Red Priestess, we can see the green screen was completed. More than that, the set appears ready for filming soon, as it’s been closed off from view “with black plastic and with a new line of trucks” … unless you’re as resourceful as her, that is:

And that’s about it for this month, folks! With just three or four months of filming left, the Winterfell battlefield has been left behind; Magheramorne continues hosting all kinds of intriguing scenes (unless this isn’t a break and we see them dismantle or abandon the set, in which case that’s it!); and the King’s Landing set looks like the next big stop — for one of the largest sequences we’ve seen in Game of Thrones, no less. Or, at least, it’d better be huge, because they’ve spent half a year building the damn place!

From the Maester’s Desk – Endgame: The Blood of the Dragon

707 - Ship - Daenerys, Jon 1

Through seven seasons, Game of Thrones has boasted a huge ensemble cast of memorable characters, and though many of them are fan favorites or integral to the plot, the most important of them all (the ones the “Song of Ice and Fire” surely alludes to) are Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen.

Both of them had humble beginnings (Dany even more so) and faced many dangers to reach the positions of power they hold now. Jon was even killed once, but he got better.

Dany was born in exile and was a refugee during most of her early years, and didn’t have many friends. She has been sold off, enslaved and betrayed, and many people have attempted to kill her. But instead of breaking, she has not only survived, but thrived in the face of adversity, gaining new and true allies and also the power to fight for her birthright, in the shape of a vast army and real, fire-breathing dragons.

Jon Snow lived comfortably in Winterfell, but resented his status as a bastard and knew that in normal circumstances it wouldn’t take him too far, so he joined the Night’s Watch, unaware that it was a dumping ground for killers and criminals of all kinds. He started as a simple steward, and was prisoner of the wildlings for a time, and though he has never asked for power, he’s a natural leader and soon became Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch and King in the North afterwards, once his watch was ended.

It’s been very exciting to watch these characters grow and bringe change with them, not without sacrifice and difficulties, but always aiming for the best. And now their biggest test is looming and the stakes couldn’t be any higher –it’s not just a matter of who’ll sit in the Iron Throne, or even the fate of Westeros alone. If the Night King wins, the whole world could be doomed.

So, based solely on what’s on the pages of the currently released five tomes of A Song of Ice and Fire, and the seven seasons of Game of Thrones (no season 8 spoilers!), I’ll make an educated guess of what’s coming up next for Dany and Jon in the final six episodes of our favorite fantasy saga.

Daenerys landing in Dragonstone

Daenerys Targaryen finally reached Westeros, but despite having the upper hand against Cersei in a beginning, she could not just lay waste to King’s Landing and burn the Red Keep with her dragons to cook her enemies. As her Hand said, that would only make her the queen of the ashes.

Since then, her advantage against Cersei has diminished somewhat: both Olenna Tyrell and the Sand Snakes are gone, Yara’s fleet was defeated and the Army of the Dead has claimed the life of Viserion. Meanwhile, Cersei still has Euron’s Iron Fleet, the support of the Iron Bank and soon the Golden Company will arrive to fight for her. And of course, the Night King obtained a brand new (and quite dangerous) mount.

I imagine that upon Dany’s arrival to Winterfell, the northern lords won’t be too happy to realize that their king has already given up his “crown” and declared for her. But as it happened with Torrhen Stark, known as “the King Who Knelt”, one look at the dragons should suffice to make them understand there wasn’t really a choice (or as Dany said about the choice the great masters of Meereen had: Live in her new world, or die with their old one). And most importantly, as Jon hopes, they’ll see her for who she is: not a foreign invader who’s coming to raze their lands, nor a “Mad Queen”, but someone who wants to build a better world and bring peace to a kingdom that has suffered and bled quite enough.

In the Season 7 finale, “The Dragon and the Wolf”, Bran seemed decided to tell Jon the truth about his parents. However, Jon being romantically involved with Daenerys changes everything: would it be a good idea to tell them right away? When so many things are on the line and tensions are so high? The new Three-Eyed Raven may have the subtlety of a sledgehammer, but Samwell is at Winterfell too, and he could restrain him until there’s a good moment to drop the bombshell news, provided both of them (and Gilly) make it to the end.

Should Bran opt not to wait, and reveal that Jon isn’t really a bastard, but the heir to the Iron Throne, and with a stronger claim than Daenerys at that, it could be a recipe for disaster. Or not. Unlike Daenerys and the many other claimants to the Throne who are already dead, he never had the ambition to rule over the Seven Kingdoms, and discovering that he’s really Aegon Targaryen won’t change that.

If anything, the truth will come as a relief: that he’s not a bastard, that his honorable adoptive father wasn’t unfaithful to his wife and that the mystery that haunted him for most of his life has been finally solved.

I think the incestuous aspect of the relationship is the largest cat that could come out of Bran’s bag of truth. Maybe that particular bit of information could be kept secret among a few people, but if it goes public, what to do then? Jaime and Cersei have gotten a lot of flak because of their no-so-secret relationship, with the former usually being the butt of jokes (one wonders how Robert Baratheon could be so blind to such an open secret). But it’s also true that not many people have reasons to love them, as opposed to Jon and Dany, who are surrounded by friends and people who respect them and are willing to fight for them.

Most Targaryen rulers were married to their relatives: brothers, sisters and such. Aegon the Conqueror himself was married to his two sisters, Rhaenys and Visenya. So, Daenerys being with Jon, or even marrying him eventually, wouldn’t be something unheard of when it comes to House Targaryen. If they prove to be good rulers, the common folk most certainly won’t mind who they choose to share their bed with.

But I’m getting a bit ahead of myself. Evidently, they can’t be rulers without getting to sit the Iron Throne first.

Wall - Eastwatch Breach 7x07 (18) Night King Viserion

But how to beat the Army of the Dead? The Night King in particular seems rather overpowered, after the show of force he demonstrated in the sixth episode of Season 7, “Beyond the Wall”. You’d think that from that moment onwards he’ll be carrying a big supply of ice spears, to take care of the other two dragons – but I have a feeling that either he won’t because of over-confidence (he has a dragon now, after all) or his aim won’t be as good as before, because the alternative is a fight that’ll be over very quickly (but to be fair, he did miss when trying to hit the fleeing Drogon. By very little, but that’s proof enough of him not being a flawless spear-thrower).

We don’t know much about the undead Viserion. Does he have the same weaknesses as the other wights, or will it take more work to bring him down? Unless our heroes have some scorpions ready with dragonglass bolts to shoot at the Night King, they’ll have to face him in the air. And that’s where things may get interesting:

I can already see comments about the predictability of Jon becoming a dragon rider, especially after the “Aegon” reveal hardly came as a surprise to most fans who have been discussing “R+L = J” for years, but I don’t think it should be a shock to anyone. It’d be a natural story beat –only that this time the Conqueror’s namesake won’t be riding the black dragon.

As discussed in my previous article, the fall of Winterfell is a very real possibility, if only because there’s no way the invasion of the undead is stopped just as it was getting started, after seven seasons of build-up.

But apart from secondary characters (and maybe one or two main ones), I don’t see the dragons dying at Winterfell. Purely from a story perspective, it’d be lame to dismount Jon that soon, and taking Drogon away from Daenerys before the final battle doesn’t feel right. If the dragons are destined to croak (and I sadly feel that’s indeed the case), it’ll have to be in the biggest battle, no doubt.

The one creature that has a bigger risk of dying early in the season is none other than Ghost. Our favorite albino pupper, as it was the case with the other direwolves, has been largely absent, to the point he was nowhere to be seen during Season 7 (according to Bryan Cogman, a Jon/Ghost goodbye scene was filmed for “Stormborn” but didn’t make it in).

Considering the budget for Season 8 will be largely devoted to the dragons and the big-scale battles, and how difficult and costly it is to bring a digital furry creature to life (one of the reasons they had to choose between Wun Wun and Ghost in “The Battle of the Bastards”), I don’t think the direwolf’s luck will be any different in the final season. I see a couple of scenarios: Ghost going out with a bang, Summer-style, to defend Jon (or his friends) or him remaining off-screen during most of the season (but making it alive to the end). I would admittedly go with the second option, which may be the boring one, but Ghost lives to tell (bark?) the tale.

Jon Ghost

Once the undead Viserion is dealt with, Daenerys probably being the one who kills him for a second time (it’s only tragically fitting that the Mother of Dragons is the one who puts her rogue “son” to sleep, this time for good) with the help of Drogon, the Night King will face off against Jon.

That one-on-one fight has been teased since Season 5, and Jon has already killed two White Walkers with Longclaw. There’s a good chance that at least one more Walker will be added to that count before the big fish himself.

Game of Thrones has a number of memorable fight scenes: Ned Stark vs. Jaime Lannister, Bronn vs. Ser Vardis Egan, Sandor Clegane vs. Beric Dondarrion, Brienne vs. Sandor Clegane, and of course, the Mountain vs. the Viper. And there’s a lot more! Each one has something unique about it: the scenario, the characters involved, the weapons they use, and what’s at stake.

Obviously I don’t know how the single combat between Jon and the Night King will play out (or if it will indeed happen, but that seems like a given), but I can imagine the pressure everyone involved with the show must be feeling to make it special. I’m assuming they’d fight on foot, but imagine if they fight atop a flying Viserion. It’s a very Hollywood-like thing, but one the show can afford to do now.

"The Ultimate Battle" by Rishiraj Singh Shekhawat.

“The Ultimate Battle” by Rishiraj Singh Shekhawat.

Will Jon survive the fight? Many things could happen. If he dies after defeating the Night King and therefore preventing the Long Night from happening, it could be interpreted that the reason the Lord of Light brought him back has been fulfilled. And this is where I think Beric Dondarrion will step in: In the books, he’s the one who brings Catelyn Stark back, by giving her the kiss of life. But since Lady Stoneheart was cut from the show, and Thoros died (with Sandor pointing out that Beric is now on his last life), the Lightning Lord’s purpose in the final season of the show seems clear to me.

Reviving Jon a second (and last) time could be considered by Beric as something just. Once the Army of the Dead has been defeated, he’ll be ready to rest, whereas Jon would still have most of his life ahead of him.

Only two things could prevent Jon’s second resurrection from happening, the way I see it. One is Jon’s own wishes, since he asked Melisandre to not bring him back again if he was killed during the Battle of the Bastards (though Melisandre did say she obeys her god, and not him). Beric is honorable enough to want to respect such a request, should Jon make it again, but same as with the Red Woman, I think he’d give preference to what his god wants.

The other is related to the dragons and magic. In the novels it is said that the birth of Dany’s dragons seems to have increased the magic/powers of the Red Priests, so their demise could weaken or make it disappear as a result. In a way, it would be similar to the end of The Lord of the Rings, with the start of the Fourth Age (the “Age of Men”) and the diminishing/disappearance of magic and mythical creatures (no more elves, the Ents awaiting their extinction, and no more istari/wizards like Gandalf, considering Radagast “lost the plot”. But as with many other things related with magic and religion, it’s all ambiguous at best and there are no clear rules set in stone.

If Jon does die, we can expect the Targaryen legacy to live on. This is an easy prediction to make, but the romantic moment they shared in the Season 7 finale will likely result in Daenerys getting pregnant. And, as the vengeful Mirri Maz Duur said, “Only death may pay for life”.
705 - Dragonstone - Drogon, Jon 1

I don’t have a prediction regarding Cersei, because I think other characters will be involved in that part of the plot. She and Dany are only enemies because the former wants to keep the throne and the latter is coming for it, but aside from the consequences of war, there’s not a personal conflict between the two of them, as opposed to the case of the Night King, who slain and reanimated one of Dany’s children.

And after it all is said and done, what’ll happen to the whole “breaking the wheel” business? After the Army of the Dead and Cersei / The Golden Company are defeated, it’ll be the dawn of a new era. Most noble houses have been entirely wiped out, some others could disappear during the battles of Season 8 or shortly afterwards, depending on which characters survive and in what condition they’re in. Apart from House Targaryen and Stark (and possibly Tyrion as the sole representative of House Lannister, if Jaime doesn’t make it), it’s going to be a very different outlook from the one that existed during Robert’s reign, before everything started to go downhill.

The smallfolk would now really be “the many”, and the nobles “the few”.

I guess Dany could just reward her allies with lands, new noble houses could take the place of the extinct ones, and the status quo would remain intact. But even if she proves to be an amazing queen of the Seven Kingdoms, the system that has brought so much suffering and bloodshed to the inhabitants of Westeros (especially the common folk), would still be in place, and I doubt she’ll be content with leaving things the way they have always been.

Maybe the change won’t be sudden and immediate, but the seeds for democracy could be planted during Dany’s reign. Placing limits on the power of whoever sits the Iron Throne with the development of a parliament. After what happened with the Mad King, surely people will want to keep future descendants of House Targaryen in check.

Perhaps monarchy won’t go away entirely, unless eventually it happens by force: a king or queen is overthrown and a stable democracy is established instead. With time, there could be elections and soon the westerosi would be able to choose their own leaders. It’s not a perfect system, as our real life world can attest to, but it’s a better one than allowing a single person to hold absolute power.

Aegon the Conqueror changed the course of history when he landed on Westeros, and now Daenerys Stormborn and Aegon will do it once again. Fire cannot kill a dragon, and ice won’t be able to do it either.

Smoke and Flaming Swords in Game of Thrones Season 8 Magheramorne Shoot

Beric Dondarrion Richard Dormer 706

As Game of Thrones continues filming its eighth and final season, this evening we bring you the latest on the ongoing shoot at Magheramorne Quarry’s new green screen set. The last two night shoots saw the return of a fan favorite and more marching armies. Spoilers today are mild but suggestive, so venture below the cut at your own risk!

GoTlike Locations shows that lately production has been taking place concurrently at Shane’s Castle, Saintfield and Magheramorne, but the latter remains the central filming location, and the one out of which we are getting the most juicy spoilers. Case in point, Davy Orr shared this video from Tuesday’s night shoot, which features a flaming sword:

There are other things going on, so I’ll point you to the flaming sword: it first appears at the 00:17 mark and is glimpsed repeatedly until a cast member brings it out and we see it clearly. The last 20 seconds of the video show the relevant part again, zoomed-in.

Positive identification is impossible here, but who could it be but Ser Beric Dondarrion? We last saw the knight and his special blade in “Beyond the Wall,” which is incidentally the episode in which his companion Thoros, the only other character known to have wielded a flaming sword, died. I’m sure this will provoke many theories of Jon or someone else wielding Lightbringer, but I’ll stick to my guns — if nothing else, because it’d mean we’ll get to listen to Richard Dormer’s voice for at least one more time!

Tonight another scene is being shot, with many more extras, as we can see in the following photos provided by GOTlikeLocations. But that’s not what stands out the most:

This was taken before shooting; they were testing the smoke machines. Photo: GOTlikeLocations

The smoke covered the entire set. Photo: GOTlikeLocations

The smoke covered the entire set. Photo: GOTlikeLocations

The extras appear to be wildling wights. Photo: GOTlikeLocations

The extras appear to be wildling wights. Photo: GOTlikeLocations

Though it’s difficult to be sure without video footage, these soldiers appears to be shambling more than marching, which points to the army of the dead. That would also fit the smoke, as the White Walkers usually bring a creepy white fog with them. Smoke machines are routinely used to add a little bit of texture and atmosphere to a scene, so we shouldn’t necessarily expect any fire — it’s probably supposed to be mist or fog.

So, what are your thoughts? Will Beric Dondarrion escape the Breach of Eastwatch and live to fight another day? Will we see him fighting the army of the dead in season eight? Are the White Walkers constantly towing a smoke machine just to appear more scary?

HBO and Major League Baseball have recently announced that they will be collaborating once more to bring specially customized Game of Thrones events, giveaways, ticket specials and experiences to participating MLB ballparks this summer, proving yet again that high fantasy and sports can find a common audience.

Although details for what sort of unique opportunities and memorabilia will be offered won’t be announced until closer to summer, last year’s collaboration included MLB player and mascot bobbleheads, video board games, special food and drinks at concession stands, co-branded t-shirts and caps, Games of Thrones costume contests, Snapchat filters, and the Iron Throne itself.

You’ll be able to purchase single-game tickets for the entire slate of announced Game of Thrones dates at MLB‘s website. If you’re fortunate enough to attend any of these games, be sure to tag your social media posts with the hashtag, #GoTMLB.

New Game of Thrones Season 8 spoilers point to crucial Brienne & Jaime scenes!

Brienne Jaime Season 6 No One

As construction of the King’s Landing set continues at Belfast’s Titanic Studios, for the last week Game of Thrones filming has centered on Magheramorne, where a number of highly spoilery scenes in the snow have been filmed. And it’s in this new set that Gwendoline Christe and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau were sighted shooting for season eight!

Before moving on to the juicy spoilers, GOTLocations updates us on the new Titanic set, which is still in construction after half a year, progressing slowly but surely:

GOTLocations also gives us a look at yesterday night’s Magheramorne shoot, which shows yet more armies on the move — Northern troops, by the look of them. Given the microphone, cast members were likely involved, though none can be clearly recognized:

Judging by their armor and weapons, these appear to be Northern soldiers. Photo: GOTLocations

Now, onto the real news, brought to us not by keen-eyed photographers but by our pals at Los Siete Reinos: according to their trusted sources, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Gwendoline Christie have been on set there for one night of shooting. But that’s not all!

For a sequence of aerial shots set in episode three, the Night King’s army will slowly advance through the snow, amid lit bonfires. By this point, right in the mid-season, the army of the dead will be composed of wildlings and brothers of the Night’s Watch.

In episode four, the totally romantic couple (fight me) of Brienne and Jaime come in! They will be fighting side by side (and not alone, though the others are unnamed) against the undead. They will probably be reunited much earlier, but it gives me pleasure to know for a fact that, for once, they will be fighting on the same side.

Brienne and Jaime last saw each other in the season seven finale, "The Dragon and the Wolf."

Brienne and Jaime last saw each other in the season seven finale, “The Dragon and the Wolf.”

As for where in Westeros this scene or the previous one from episode three are supposed to take place, we have no idea. They were filmed at the Magheramorne green screen set, with a mantle of snow, so it could be anywhere where it snows, which at this point is anywhere the story is likely to focus on. If I were to venture an educated guess, in episodes three and four I would place these characters somewhere in the North.

So, what do you spoiler-followers think? Will both of them get out of that one alive? Who are the other characters there? Will the Night King be fought off by episode four? What other questions can I ask in order to encourage discussion in the comments? Well, you can give your answers to all these questions and more … in the comments below!

Tobias Menzies speaks out on Potential Fate of Game of Thrones’ Edmure Tully

Edmure

There are many Game of Thrones questions that have sprung to mind during the mind-numbingly long off-season wait: Will either Jon Aegon or Daenerys ultimately become king/queen? Will Cersei find a way to defeat everyone we care about and claim an ultimately short-lived rule before succumbing to the White Walkers? Will Theon successfully rescue Yara and escape (relatively) unscathed? Will the handsomest and cleverest of all, Ser Jorah Mormont the Andal of Bear Island claim his rightful place at Queen Daenerys’ side, and serve her for many years to come? The answer to all these and more are yet-to-be determined, but we’re here to pose another equally important, albeit less-pondered question: What the hell happened to Edmure Tully? In an interview with Digital Spy, Tobias Menzies offers his thoughts.

Ever since you tortured your friends by filming their reactions to the harrowing events of Edmure’s (red) wedding, he’s been locked away in the Frey dungeons.  Since then, he’s only popped up once for a few brief silent scenes, followed by a pulse-pounding heart-to-heart with Jaime, all in the final few episodes of season 6. Ever since abandoning ship on the S.S. Abandoned Characters in season 6, it appears that he has once again swum back to the boat from whence he came. And so we wonder if he will resurface in season 8 to conclude his story arc once and for all. Funny – so does he:

“The honest answer is, I have no idea. He’s obviously somewhere in a prison, he’s still around alive somewhere. They’re pretty stingy with their information and I’ve not heard anything from them.”

Good to know that Menzies is seemingly as in-the-dark as we all are. I wonder if he’s doomed to rot in the Frey dungeon, given that Arya has all but eviscerated House Frey from Westeros. The problem, Menzies notes, is that with so many ongoing plots, GoT might move on from poor Edmure:

“I feel like they have so many stories to tie up, whether that’s a story they’ll want to go back to, I don’t know.”

Menzies has long been one of my favorite character actors working on TV, and no I’m not just saying that because he is on GoT. He has portrayed two characters on Outlander, displaying his incredible duality, and even popped up on a Black Mirror episode (as seemingly all British actors are contractually obligated to do). And one of my all-time favorite shows, HBO’s ROME, a show that in many ways paved the way for GoT both in budget and in period setting, featured Tobias Menzies in the pivotal role of Marcus Brutus. Never you mind that Brutus (spoilers) betrays Caesar, who was played by Ciarán Hinds, our very own Mance Rayder; both Menzies and Hinds will be appearing together again on AMC’s The Terror. While I watch this, I will sit and wonder if Edmure Tully will have the chance to grace our screens one last time in Game of Thrones. Join me, won’t you?

The Writing On the Wall: Violence Is a Disease

game-thrones-season-6-episode-7

“Violence is a disease. You don’t cure a disease by spreading it to more people.”
“You don’t cure it by dying, either.”

The world of Game of Thrones is a brutal one, there is no denying. It is a consequence of George R. R. Martin’s portrayal of a fantasy world that is more realistic than the one often found in fantastical literature. That reality certainly resonates with audiences, for as many people can tell you, there is often no white male protagonist who will swoop in to save the day. Sometimes the wrong people win, a wedding turns into a horrifying massacre, and an idyllic society is destroyed before it even has the opportunity to begin.

The question of violence is an inherent one to the series and it has existed ever since young Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright) was pushed out of a Winterfell tower window. Countless debates have been waged as to what the series wants to say about violence, how it depicts violent acts and against whom, and whether or not the depiction in question is actually saying something about violence and its role in our society. How the series overall handles the complexities of violence is another article for another time, but there is a key thoroughfare in “The Broken Man” that asks the question of how one can go about building a nonviolent society in a world that seems to be breaking apart at all seams.

Brother Ray (Ian McShane) is a combination of the Elder Brother and Septon Meribald from A Feast for Crows. He provides a curious case study in what Game of Thrones is perhaps trying to say about the violence it depicts and how it impacts its characters. In his past, Ray was what one would consider to be a consummate sellsword. He did everything he was told in the War of the Ninepenny Kings, be it murdering peasants or setting village homes on fire. He was thought to be a brave mercenary, but he admitted that he was little more than “a coward who followed orders.”

One day he committed a crime that he could no longer justify as having committed under the auspices of it being an order. He cut the throat of a young boy in front of his screaming mother. She was being held back but her screams of terror, grief, and helplessness transcended that physical barrier. Her screams continued to haunt Ray, his sleep seemingly forever ensconced within an unrelenting guilt. He searches for a pathway towards redemption and he finds one in the Faith of the Seven.

He openly admits to the Hound (Rory McCann) that he has absolutely no idea as to who the real gods are – millions could be worshipping the wrong ones for all he knew. What he believes, however, is that the precise organized religion one believes in and whose deity(ies) one worships are the less relevant question. What is more important is the principles of said religion that someone stands for. The principles he believes in are the principles of peace and he recognizes that as long as one is committed to those principles, the methodology of committing to them is not as important.

When the audience meets Brother Ray, he is building what appears to be an idyllic commune amongst the green valleys of the Riverlands. He has a band of followers, each of whom has their own story as to how they found themselves in that commune. It is likely that several of the individuals in Brother Ray’s community decided to eschew the violence engulfing the rest of Westeros and find a home for themselves that was not embroiled in the dynastic wars of wealthy aristocrats. As is often the case with Game of Thrones, that idyllic sense of being only lasts for a brief amount of time.

cq5dam.web.1200.675

Three riders from the Brotherhood Without Banners arrived with an intent to demand the horses, gold, and or weapons Ray and his community did not have. Sensing an imminent threat of violence, Ray refuses to fight the intruders in spite of the Hound’s insistence, noting that violence is a disease and that spreading it only creates a more violent society in turn. The Hound, embittered by an unarguably difficult life, disagrees.

With the ending to the Hound’s journey with Ray, Game of Thrones offers a much more nuanced story than what may appear at initial viewing. The Hound may leave the destroyed commune with a fervent desire for vengeance, but he is critically wanting vengeance for someone he is calling a friend. He may not let go of the bitterness life has given him nor may he ever adopt Brother Ray’s manifesto of peace wholesale, but there is a part of him that has undoubtedly been changed by the words and deeds of a man whose relationship with violence transformed so radically.

The destruction of the sept and the mass murder of Ray and his community would seem to definitively validate the Hound’s point of view. If they had fought back before the intruders had a chance to regroup, then the commune members perhaps could have saved themselves from their fate. The obvious question of obtaining weaponry and logistics aside, there is another takeaway from this scene that is about more than whether or not the Hound or Ray was right about the implementation and nature of violence.

The larger, arguably more important question, is whether or not it is worth creating a society built on the principles of peace in a world that is chaotic and seems to be unrelentingly evil. Is it worth creating a society, small as it may be, based on the principles of breaking the never ending cycle of violence? Is it worth embracing the principles of peace if butchers seem to be on every path you cross? If the story of Ray is a tragedy, it is also a story of finding redemption through the renunciation of violence. His journey indicates that as far as “The Broken Man” is concerned, in spite of all the obstacles and cruelty in your way, building that society is crucial. However long it may last, it is a break in the cycle of violence and if enough of those breaks come together, then perhaps that cyclical nature of violence can indeed be broken.

Akash Of the Andals

White Walkers recruit a new undead army in latest Season 8 production SPOILERS!

Night King Hardhome 508

The White Walkers are through the Wall. It will only be a matter of time, likely early in the eighth season, before they reach civilization … or an army to fight them back. But, of course, this is Game of Thrones, so there is a third, much grimmer option: that they encounter an army to defeat and swell their own undead ranks. And, as the latest report from the new set at Magheramorne shows, that may be exactly what’s happening! Needless to say: spoilers ahead! Meet the Night King’s new soldiers below the cut…

Before moving on to Magheramorne, let’s stop by the new King’s Landing set just outside Titanic Studios, as A Red Priestess brings us an update on the city gate construction:

The gate is nearly there. It was first built broken; we’ll see it in both states. Photo: A Red Priestess

Now, back to Magheramorne! Diligent Tweeter Hogwort has been taking the highest quality photos yet — from a place located over two kilometers from the green screen set. Early on, he claims to have witnessed the Unsullied army, just as we reported last week, as well as fire on set and Jon and Daenerys, though he is unsure of the latter. The fire, however, was photographed, as well as a dialogue scene with unknown cast members:

Fire elements can be shot against a green screen and then added in post-production. They could also be used for realistic fire lighting. Photo: Hogwort

Yesterday’s photos are the most telling, however, and the main reason for today’s report, as they star the White Walker army in action. But there’s more to it than that…

The big deal here is that we have never seen wights on horseback. And I mean never. That’s not to say they’re mindless zombies — they use weapons, after all. Still, whenever we’ve seen the army of the dead, whether they are marching or fighting, the only ones riding are their masters. So why are the green-suited stuntpeople on horseback?

First of all: these are definitely wights. White Walkers are just guys in prosthetics and make-up (except for their eerie bright blue eyes, which are added in post-production.) The green suits are used for wights — that is, the undead thralls of the White Walkers. Granted, some fresh wights are purely make-up jobs, like their masters, but the decayed, skeletal kind are achieved with the help of visual effects. Hence the green suits. Some of these horsemen have only certain body parts covered in green, which points to decaying bodies with only some skeletal parts. If these were new creatures, or computer-generated White Walkers for some reason, they’d all wear full-body green suits.

Even though it would be unprecedented, the only thing that makes sense to me is that we’ll see wights on horseback in season eight. But why do that now, after so many years? I can only think of one good reason for debuting these undead riders: Dothraki wights. The clothing and saddles fit the Dothraki style; the photographer suspects as much; and what a powerful image it would be to see the Dothraki turned against their queen!

Meereen Battle 6x09 (10) Dothraki

So, if the Night King’s new undead cavalrymen are indeed Dothraki as it appears, how will they will fall under his spell in the last season? Will they be the first to fall in battle for their queen? Will the Unsullied be safe from this onslaught? What do you think?
