If you’re of the opinion that some gorgeous A Song of Ice and Fire artwork would brighten your life up right now (and, really, why wouldn’t it?), I have some good news for you. Penguin Random House’s 2021 A Song of Ice and Fire calendar is available for purchase!
The calendar features 13 illustrations (including a fold-out poster) of scenes from A Song of Ice and Fire painted by Sam Hogg. The artist celebrated the calendar’s release on Twitter earlier today with a preview of her personal favorite illustration, which depicts Theon Greyjoy giving Jeyne Poole “Arya Stark” away at her wedding to Ramsay.
Hogg offered insight into how she crafted these gorgeous works, tweeting that they were all done in oil on canvases at least 20×20 inches in size. A limited number of signed prints and/or copies will be available at a later date. I recommend following her on Twitter to stay up to date on any developments.
If anyone would like a signed copy/sketch & signed copy & doesn’t mind postage from the UK, I’ll be getting a limited number from the publishers and with cons being off the table this year, might be the only way to get one signed soon! Will post about it when I get the calendars

The Penguin Random House preview of the calendar also includes a look at February’s art, a depiction of Chataya and the women of her house:
In the meantime, you can purchase the calendar from Penguin Random House’s website for $18.00.
Which A Song of Ice and Fire scene do you most hope is included in the collection? Tell us below.

We here at Watchers on the Wall don’t often report on the personal lives of Game of Thrones actors, but we’re making an exception for this one. Sophie Turner, our Queen of the North, and her husband Joe Jonas have become parents!
According to PEOPLE, Turner gave birth to a baby girl last Wednesday in Los Angeles. She and Jonas have named their daughter Willa (and much as I try to recognize that Game of Thrones alumni have lives outside of the show, it makes me smile that Wylla is also the name of the woman at Starfall who took care of Jon Snow as a baby).
“The couple is already obsessed and can’t stop gloating about their new addition,” a source told Entertainment Tonight. “The couple is taking time to enjoy this special moment and have only shared the news and updates with family and friends.”
Indeed, neither Turner nor Jonas have posted about the birth on their Instagram accounts and I certainly hope the public respects their need for privacy. But, on the extraordinarily slim chance they see this post, we at Watchers on the Wall offer our congratulations to the new parents!

It’s been over a year since we were forced to say “goodbye” to Missandei of Naath, but we certainly haven’t seen the last of Nathalie Emmanuel. In a recent interview, Emmanuel took a break from discussing her many upcoming projects to talk about Missandei, her on-set rapport with Emilia Clarke and why it’s important for shows to feature diverse casts.
Nathalie Emmanuel admitted in an interview Vogue that she still hasn’t watched the ending of Game of Thrones, though she is, of course, aware of its, eh, major plot points.
“I loosely know that [Dany] avenges her friend,” she said. “I’m not sure that Missandei had any idea what she started…”

In all seriousness, Emmanuel knows how important Missandei was to fans, and pointed out that much of the anger surrounding Missandei’s death has to do with the fact that she was one of the very few characters of color on an overwhelming white show.
“I definitely understood beforehand what my role meant to people but the days after that episode really brought it home,” she said. “I loved that character, and I wish she had had a happy ending – but Westeros is this brutal, heartless world, so you have to keep that in mind. When it comes down to it, the backlash stems from the fact that, when there’s so few non-white characters on-screen, a death like that registers as a massive loss.”
Emmanuel said that she and Jacob Anderson often discussed the significance of their characters and the responsibility of playing the only major characters of color on a show of such magnitude. “We were always really conscious of how much our being part of Game of Thrones mattered to people. It made us really protective of Missandei and Grey Worm.”
“At the end of the day, if there’s ever a show on the level of Game of Thrones again, representation has to be part of the conversation from the beginning. That way, there’s no single person who has to represent every other person of colour.”
Emmanuel also discussed the challenges of being a woman on a “male-dominated set.”
“[I]n my first season, my costume was pretty revealing, and there was an incident with an extra who made a comment about it on set – I mean, typical – and Emilia straightaway had my back. It got handled.”
Indeed, Emilia and Nathalie bonded over being “the only girls” on set.
“Emilia and I got on like a house on fire from the beginning,” Emmanuel said. “When I joined the cast, she had already been shooting Game of Thrones for a few years, and she was definitely ready to have some female energy around her. She and I always looked out for each other.”

This has been a long year, with a lot of strange things happening in the world. Not a lot of fun, for obvious reasons, and unfortunately no Con of Thrones this summer. As it happens, the con is when we usually unload a good amount of the Game of Thrones merch that comes our way, as trivia prizes and rewards for “Find Sue in the dining area and win a mug!”-type games. Reorganizing for my recent move reminded me I needed to find something to do with some of this goodness, so as promised, here it is, your super summer Game of Thrones worldwide giveaway! It won’t make up for the murder hornets but hopefully it will put a smile on your face.
We have FIVE prize packages, loaded with fun. Leave a comment to enter and you will be entered to win all, with winners chosen randomly. (Complete rules listed below the prizes, with additional ways to enter!)
This beautiful collectible comes with 32 resin game pieces capturing the likenesses of the stars of Game of Thrones. The two sides are represented by the living of Westeros and the White Walkers of the far north. Whether you’re a chess player yourself, or just want to display this game as a piece of art, the Game of Thrones chess set will be the centerpiece of any room or any fan’s collection. Chess is a great game, perfect for honing your devious mind and figuring out how the enemy works. Normally this prize might set you back around $98, give or take, but one of our readers will take it home as a gift from us to enjoy in this long night between shows.
If the Night King hadn’t shattered into a million icy shards, maybe Arya would’ve turned his skull into a drinking mug like this. Geeki Tikis Plastic Tumblers feature sculpted detailing true to the character, and they’re high-quality, BPA-free and dishwasher safe. The lightweight tumblers are perfect for the summer that’s finally here. Joining the prize package is Theon’s long overdue Funko figure, one of my favorites from the entire line.
Things could have gone better- much, much, much better, for Team Targaryen, I’ll say that. The beautiful Missandei Funko Pop! Figure is a Barnes & Noble-NYCC Shared Exclusive Limited Edition, and is a smart addition to any collector’s Funko display. Jon and Daenerys are reproduced in Geeki Tiki-tumbler form, in loving detail. Enjoy them together, or separately if you prefer.
Jon and the ill-fated dragon ride again in this large figure. The scale of the dragon Funkos is impressive but not practical for everyday use; that’s why we have Ghost! There he is! Perfectly sized and portable in keychain form, he’s the ultimate Good Boy. Also included in the package is a cool enamel pin depicting Jon in wildling-style furs as seen when he ventures beyond the wall.
Bend the knee to the Queen in the North! And her right-hand woman while you’re at it. This prize package features two of our favorite leading women as we saw them in the final episode of Game of Thrones, with Sansa in her stunning costume and northern wolf crown, and Brienne in Kingsguard armor, Oathkeeper at her side.

Well, this is unexpected! It’s also technically still just a rumor, but we’ll take what we can get at this point: there could be some big news happening with regard to the Game of Thrones spinoff show The House of the Dragon (which will delve into some of the history of House Targaryen) and it has to do with casting.
The Witcher fansite Redanian Intelligence — which also has reported reliable Thrones news in the past — is reporting that HoTD is in the process of casting two of its most central female leads, Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower. Allegedly, HBO is looking for someone in “their late twenties” for the former and “a slightly older actress” for the latter. To make a very long story as short as possible, these two are the driving forces behind the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons that allegedly will be a major focus of HoTD.
Redanian also notes that William O’Toole, “who previously worked as a financial controller on HBO’s unaired Game of Thrones prequel Bloodmoon, now lists a new project among his work,” which is listed as “Untitled Game of Thrones Prequel – Red Gun” on O’Toole’s LinkedIn page. It’s not too much of a leap to assume that “Red Gun” is the codename for HoTD.
Sci-fi and fantasy website The Wertzone also is reporting the casting news and references the “Red Gun” codename, so it seems as if this news is making the rounds rather quickly. And if any of this is true, it means production on HoTD is moving forward in spite of circumstances imposed by the global COVID-19 pandemic — and that HBO is certainly committed to giving us more Thrones content, which I personally will not complain about in the least.
All of that said, as with most casting and production news that don’t come directly from our own sources or HBO itself, Watchers on the Wall can’t always independently verify these reports. Until we hear otherwise, we’ll consider these casting calls rumors.
