A beloved character is returning for Season 8, and while there was no way to choose a header photo for this story that didn’t immediately give it away, that doesn’t diminish my excitement one bit — ladies and gents, Ghost will be back!
Visual effects supervisor Joe Bauer told Huffington Post in a recent interview that Jon Snow‘s faithful red-eyed direwolf, who wasn’t seen in a single episode of Season 7, will be a big player in the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones.
“Oh, you’ll see him again. He has a fair amount of screen time in Season 8,” Bauer said. “He does show up. … he’s very present and does some pretty cool things.”
Although Bauer noted that showrunners Dave Benioff and Dan Weiss could probably shed more light onto why Ghost was MIA for Season 7, he did say that it was, at least in part, due to the fact that working with real wolves — the method they usually use for creating the direwolves in the show — is predictably difficult.
“The direwolves are tough because you don’t want to get them wrong, so we end up always shooting real wolves and doing a scaling trick with them, but the real wolves only behave in certain ways,” Bauer said. “I think that has something to do with why the direwolves are in the show but they’re not maybe as integral as they are in the books.”
So if we’re seeing one direwolf in Season 8, will we see more? Last season we got a tantalizing scene with Nymeria and Arya, even though Nymeria ultimately stayed with the wild wolf pack she’s presumably been leading since Arya drove her off way back in Season 1. But as the symbol of House Stark, who has returned to power in the North, will the remaining direwolves join forces with their human counterparts in the fight between the living and the dead?
Unfortunately, we don’t know about that, as Bauer doesn’t comment on her fate specifically in this interview. But maybe we can speculate that since this is the final season of Thrones, the show is going all-in on the direwolf budget. Like all things Season 8, we’ll just have to wait to find out.

Welcome, friends, to the arrival of another beer from Brewery Ommegang and HBO, with your trusty Watchers on the Wall beer reviewer to give you a first taste. Mother of Dragons, the third beer in the limited release Royal Reserve Collection, is a blend of smoked porter and cherry kriek brewed in honor of Daenerys Targaryen, or to use the fancier official description:
This blend of a smoked porter and a Belgian kriek represents the smoke and fire that Daenerys has unleashed on her opponents during her ascent to conquer and rule the seven kingdoms.
The bottle’s label describes it as a “delicately smoked porter,” and the key word here is “delicate” (more on that below). Speaking of the bottle, Mother of Dragons is probably cool enough to justify purchasing the beer, with a rich, crimson, shiny label with the Targaryen sigil in the background.
When poured, the beer was a Coca-Cola color and smelled like boozy cherries but it did not taste like a cherry or fruit beer. There is a hint of bitterness in the aftertaste. Due to the color, description and inspiration, I thought it would be a very aggressive beer but it’s easy to drink. The flavor, as per HBO:
Aromas of chocolate covered cherries intertwine with subtle smoke and roasted malt. The flavor is rich with tart cherry up front leading to a center palate of semi-sweet chocolate then resolving to subtle smoke and mild sweetness. The mouthfeel is luxuriously creamy and full, and the finish is semi-dry with lingering notes of smoke and cherry sweetness.
The more you drink it and let it settle, the more bitter it becomes, though it is never overwhelming. I also noticed as I kept drinking it from a clean glass that there was a distinct coppery/metallic smell that you could not taste, but was a little disconcerting at times because I thought I had cut my lip or something. Nope! Just an interesting facet of this particular beer, and one that I’ve experienced with others like it.
Mother of Dragons doesn’t have the same robust flavor as some of the other beers from the Brewery Ommegang Game of Thrones collection, such as the previous Queen of the Seven Kingdoms Cersei brew in the Royal Reserve quartet; it is definitely a different kind of beer, so those who don’t like a sour or yeast beer might find something enjoyable here.
I personally like it, but it’s not my favorite beer Ommegang has put out in this collaboration, or even my favorite beer in the Royal Reserve collection thus far (I’m on my third or fourth bottle of the Cersei sour beer). I always advocate trying these beers, but please be aware of the differences in flavors, etc. if medium to dark beers are not your scene.
Mother of Dragons is available now for purchase in those beautiful 750ml bottles and on draft (which I always recommend), and we would love to hear what you think of it here! And thank you to Brewery Ommegang and HBO for sending us the beer for consideration for this post. Stay posted here for the announcement of the fourth beer in the Royal Reserve collection!

The wait for the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones continues to drag on, but at least we have a couple of interviews to brighten your day! Kit Harington tries to discuss next season without giving anything away and reveals his keepsake from the show, while Sophie Turner takes a much more candid approach – which may or may not make us happy.
Speaking with Men’s Journal, Kit Harington is unsurprisingly tight-lipped about Thrones’ final season. “This is going to be so boring, but it’s a minefield to say anything. Even in the past when I’ve said something it gets taken the wrong way, or that I revealed something. Even if I’ll say that it’s going to be an exciting season, it’ll get put out in the wrong way. I don’t know how I’m going to deal with this when I actually have to promote the thing, but I don’t want anything to get taken wrongly.” I think poor Kit is still traumatized from having to lie for a year after season five.
There is one tidbit Harington is willing to share, however – what he took from the set as a memento. No, not Longclaw (which he has long said he wanted to keep), but part of Jon’s armor. “I actually didn’t take anything too crazy. I kept some of the armor that I use for Jon Snow’s outfit, like the wrist protectors I’ll wear in his costume. I thought those were pretty cool.” I suppose, but Longclaw would have been cooler. Showrunners, give this man his sword!
Check out the rest for Harington’s thoughts on Game of Thrones‘ big Emmy win and what it’s like filming on location.
Harington’s onscreen sibling (er, cousin) is a bit more open than he is about the series finale. In an interview with IGN, Sophie Turner confesses that fan reaction to the ending could be a mixed bag. “As an actor it was really satisfying – I think for everyone, everyone’s storylines – to be able to act out the way that it all ends..Who knows if it will be satisfying for the fans. I think a lot of fans will be disappointed and a lot of fans will be over the moon.” Let’s hope we land in the second category.
Turner adds, “I think it will be really interesting to see people’s reactions, but for me reading the script it was just like heartbreaking to read at the very final page of the script it just says, ‘End of Game of Thrones’. That was really emotional.” As it will be for us all, I’m sure – disappointing or not.
She also reveals what’s in store for Sansa in season eight, saying, “She kind of takes ownership over who she is and what she stands for. Over the course of the series she’s been completely unaware of what she wants, where she wants to be, who she really is, and at the end of this season, I feel she is the most self-assured character in the show.” Sounds to me like Sansa makes it out alive, but I suppose we won’t know for sure until the final credits roll…

In a new interview, Maisie Williams gives unexpected insight into the final season… in a way. She divulges no spoilers, but she does discuss how the ever-growing importance of female characters will continue in the final season. We are also told what Maisie does to prepare when she adorns the mantle of Game of Thrones‘s resident “serial killer everyone’s rooting for” (her words), among other interesting soundbites. We’ll take it!
Maisie tells Elle that season seven was a turning point for Arya, because prior to it, we had largely seen her killing an assortment of bad eggs, including pedophiles (Meryn Trant), traitors (Walder Frey), and fellow psychopaths (The Waif), among many others:
“Arya was always killing the baddies, Williams notes. “But then we saw her start to use those manipulative powers. It’s not until she had that whole dialogue with her sister Sansa in the last season that you realise what she’s become, that she’s being awful to someone who we love. For me, it was a really great moment as an actor to be able to play the character you love as a baddie.”
Maisie goes on to discuss her friendship with fellow Stark sister, Sophie Turner:
“Also Sophie is my best friend. Who gets to be on set with their best friend? Me!”
As a guy who acted in high school alongside his best friend throughout many a stage production, I can attest that it’s pretty damn cool. Their real life bond has gone so far, that the sisters will pair up when Maisie joins Sophie’s side at Sophie’s wedding. As fans, we are incredibly happy for them. As devout fans, we hope their wedding is neither red, nor purple, nor any other color. But I digress…
How does Maisie get into Arya’s head? It’s not always so easy, she says, as she uses a technique known as ’emotional memory’: “I find it very helpful, but it’s horrible. You have to draw on things from your own life. So sometimes, to get inside Arya’s head, I’m thinking about some awful things. It’s hard to just drop that and let it go.”
Additionally, Maisie acknowledges the show has grown with the changing tide of awareness: “For me, [Game of Thrones] is a medieval world in which women don’t have a lot of rights, and yet they still prevail. But I do think that as the seasons have gone on, it’s become more and more amazing for women.”
The ‘sexposition’ of seasons’ past has been nowhere near as prevalent in seasons 6 and 7. Then again, we recall a casting notice for season 8, reading ‘actress, aged 18-25, will have to go naked above-the-waist.’ So hey, ‘tits and dragons,’ I guess? In all seriousness, Maisie is not wrong. The women’s power dynamics shifted drastically over the last few seasons, particularly when season 6 ended with Cersei atop the throne, Yara making a pact with Daenerys, who finally set sail to Westeros, and Sophie emerging as Lady Stark of Winterfell. While season 7 certainly furthered these plots for better or worse for the women involved, the power moves women have made as the show has gone on have increased dramatically, and this is an excellent direction, I’d say. So would Maisie, as she teases this trend will continue in season eight:
“[T]his final season is going to be incredible. It just feels great, being on set with all these girls. They’re all ruling, you know, they’re all back on top – it’s pretty impressive.”
So, will Arya Stark make it to the finale alive and well? The closest thing we get to a spoiler is Maisie’s personal desire: “Season one to eight, that’s what I wanted. I was in the first episode and I want to be in the last.” Note how she ‘wants’ to and does not confirm that she is. If I’m hedging my bets, however, I think Arya is one of the most assured characters to survive the entire show. Whether it’s a happy ending for her, or a sad and lonely one, I think there will be an ending involving life. If it’s a happy ending though, perhaps I haven’t been paying attention.
Check out the full interview for more on Maisie’s perceived parallels between herself and Arya, as well as on her relationship with her boyfriend and family.

HBO officially announced today that fans will have a new opportunity to connect with Game of Thrones, with the launch of Game of Thrones Legacy Experiences in Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland (and particularly Titanic Studios in Belfast) has served as the shooting home base for the entire run of the show.
HBO says:
As Game of Thrones finishes filming after a decade in Northern Ireland, HBO is celebrating the show’s incredible legacy in the region by converting several filming locations into tourist attractions. For the first time ever, fans of the Emmy® Award-winning series will have the unique opportunity to visit iconic sets from the show and immerse themselves in the world of Westeros.
Building on the success of past Game of Thrones live branded experiences, including the Touring Exhibition and Game of Thrones Live Concert Experience, HBO will open up the archives and share them with the series’ loyal fans. In true Game of Thrones fashion, the Game of Thrones Legacy attractions will be on a scale and scope bigger than anything the public has ever seen, offering the first opportunity for the public to set foot inside some of the most iconic locations from the series and behind the camera lens to see how the world’s biggest TV show was made. Each site will feature not only the breathtaking sets, but will also exhibit displays of costumes, props, weapons, set decorations, art files, models, and other production materials. The visitor experience will be enhanced by state-of-the-art digital content and interactive materials which will showcase some of the digital wizardry the series is known for.
“HBO is thrilled to celebrate the work of the Game of Thrones creative team and crew by preserving these locations and inviting fans to visit Northern Ireland and explore Westeros in person,” said Jeff Peters, Vice President, Licensing and Retail, HBO. “We look forward to opening the gates and sharing the excitement of stepping inside these amazing sets with Game of Thrones fans from around the world. The opportunity to celebrate Northern Ireland’s pivotal role in the life and legacy of the show and share its culture, beauty and warmth is also a huge inspiration behind these Legacy projects.”
“We couldn’t be more excited about the Game of Thrones Legacy project coming to Northern Ireland. While fans have seen the stunning landscapes, coastlines and mountains in the series, we are thrilled they will now have the opportunity to fully experience the charm of Northern Ireland and immerse themselves in to the world of Westeros,” said John McGrillen, Chief Executive of Tourism NI. “The Game of Thrones Legacy project will be a game changer for Northern Ireland on the global tourism level. We very much welcome this exciting announcement by HBO and look forward to welcoming many more visitors to our beautiful country as a result.”
Given the unique and impressive nature of the production work in Northern Ireland, HBO is considering including the standing sets for iconic locations such as Winterfell, Castle Black, and Kings Landing alongside a formal studio tour of Linen Mill Studios which will showcase a wide array of subject matter from the series spanning all seasons and settings. A description of the full scope of the Game of Thrones Legacy project will be revealed at a later date after the exploratory process is completed. A tentative targeted open date is currently set for 2019
It sounds like there are still several decisions to be made about the Legacy project, since they don’t have some major sets locked in as part of the tourist attractions, based on this release. But nonetheless it’s exciting and I’m glad to see HBO and Tourism NI are moving ahead with preserving GoT’s sets. The long-lasting influence of Game of Thrones is still awe-inspiring and touching. We’ve come a long way from the earliest days, hoping that the show would at least last a season!

Funko unveiled their latest batch of GoT Pop! figures on their blog today, along with a few more goodies. The other new toys include Pop! keychains featuring Jon’s faithful direwolf Ghost, Tyrion Lannister and the Night King, and a pair of Rock Candy sisters.
The new additions to the mega popular Pop! toy line include (in addition to the oh-my-god-gotta-have-it Beric Dondarrion figure above):
Yara Greyjoy:
Bran Stark, with Catspaw dagger and chair:
Lord Varys! No word yet if there’s also a wizard or a dwarf crammed in the box.
The Children of the Forest:
Orrrr you could go with the metallic version of Children Pop! figure, which will be available exclusively though the HBO Shop!
Gendry! With a warhammer and no oars, sadly. (I kid. I love it.)

I’ve been on a Game of Thrones merch spree of late, and just received a sweet piece I pre-ordered some time ago, so now seems like the perfect time for another post full of GoT goodies! Just after Back to School madness and in advance of the scarily earlier-every-year holiday shopping, here’s a list of my favorite things.
Pre-ordered back in May, this week I finally received the Weirwood Tree Goblet (shown above left), actually ahead of the announced October shipping date. Vivid and beautifully detailed, it’s worth every penny. I can’t wait to drink buckets of wine out of this thing while making stupid Jojen-paste jokes for the next fifty years. ($44.95)
HBO has definitely stepped up its beverage game- there’s a ton of new steins and glassware in the HBOShop that are a step up from the previous class. One I love and will probably be my next purchase is the House Stark Winter is Coming Tankard (shown above, right). The tankard includes a light blue take on the crest. The “icy” rim and the armored handle are cool touches, and the chains and wires give it a hardcore Northern vibe. This one comes packaged in a Seven Kingdoms gift box, so it’ll be great for displaying or gifting. ($59.95)
Being a writer, naturally I’m a sucker for the Game of Thrones journals created by InsightEditions. The journals feature strong construction with 192 lined pages of high-quality heavy stock paper. The ribbon placeholder, elastic closure, and back pocket in each one included make the journals super functional and useful. With my affinity for Jaqen H’ghar, personally I’m drawn to the lovely Valar Morghulis journal. I also love the Night’s Watch journal, with the interesting cover illustration and the oath inside. We’re partial to that here! ($18.95-$19.95 each)
If you’re fully in the school-supplies mindset, go all out and get yourself a Thrones stationery set while you’re at it. These beauties come with journals as well, and come in Targaryen, Stark and Lannister varieties, so you don’t have to compromise your house loyalty! Each set includes a wax stamp, envelopes, paperweight, and writing paper all featuring the house sigil, plus two wax sticks, all in a gorgeous display case. Send your enemies a command to bend the knee with the Targaryen Stationery Kit. ($34.95)
4DCityscape returns with another amazing puzzle to challenge GoT fans. The Dragon Egg Puzzle Set is a 3-piece set of puzzles recreating Daenerys’ dragon eggs. Made with 180 pieces, the assembled eggs each measure six inches, and can be presented in 360-degrees with the included display stand. This one will make a great holiday gift. ($39.99)
This one is so damned pretty, we’re blessed as fans that we get these replicas- Daenerys’ Three Headed Dragon Pin by Noble Collection is available. Whether you’re looking for an authentic touch for Halloween or just like nice jewelry, this is a great collectible. The detailed pin measures 4.25 x 3 inches, and gives off legit khaleesi vibes. ($54.95)
During the in-season, we oooh and aaaah every week over the latest stills released for each new episode. One cool piece of merch for fans who are into these beautiful photographs is the Game of Thrones Poster Collection ($19.95), which is up to Volume III now (covering seasons 5 and 6). The posters, great for framing, include portraits of the show’s biggest characters, including Jon, Daenerys, Tyrion and more, plus art from marketing campaigns. Volume I (featuring seasons 1 and 2) and Volume II (seasons 3 and 4) are also still available.
The Great House sigil pillows are pretty swank and they’re all on sale this week. Shaped like shields and featuring the house motto on the reverse of each pillow, the pillows include gold rope trim for that extra royal touch. The House Lannister pillow is my favorite. It’ll give me something to cry into during the final season. ($25.46)
Halloween is coming, of course, just over a month away now. Go on, buy the Night King mask and scare the shit out of everyone. Do it for us, and take pics. And report back. ($49.95)
It’s nice to see HBO has been on their game with new updates in the shop. It looks like they’ve been doing the same with Westworld, adding items for their newest hot show, including this friggin hilarious and disturbing prototype host body bobblehead. It’s so bizarre…I might actually pre-order it.

The annual Emmy Awards, honoring the best in television, have come and gone and left Game of Thrones with even more gold hardware to add to its display case — nine awards in all, including Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Peter Dinklage and the coveted Outstanding Drama Series prize (the fact that I can’t add Lena Heady to this list fills me with low-grade rage, but that’s just me). As with any awards show, a bevy of interviews took place before, during and after, and we’ve rounded up some of the best and most intriguing for your reading pleasure.
We start with a piece from Digital Spy that reveals that Dinklage had “concerns” about taking on the role of Tyrion before he met with showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss, because he wasn’t “familiar with the complexity of Tyrion at that point … unfortunately before this character, many times people my size weren’t complicated enough for me to be interested in doing it.” I imagine that tune changed pretty quickly, don’t you? Digital Spy also noted that during a separate backstage interview, Benioff acknowledged that Season 8 is “taking a really f**cking long time,” but not because anyone is “going on vacation or slacking off, it’s just that last season is far beyond what we’ve ever attempted before.”
As for the win for best Drama Series, which was — to put it nicely — unexpected by many viewers and industry commentators, don’t worry: the cast felt the same way, according to Vulture. Emilia Clarke said at HBO’s after-party that they were “very surprised,” but George R.R. Martin noted that even though he didn’t expect to win, “you can’t beat dragons.”
Speaking of Martin, the author was talkative on the red carpet and in backstage interviews, although he was predictably coy about the progress on the last two books in the Song of Ice and Fire series, telling US Weekly that the much-anticipated sixth and seventh novels will be done “when they’re done.” However, he reminded us, that with five prequels in various stages of development and two more books to come, “the world of Westeros is not wrapping up.”
Martin also gave a lengthy interview to Variety, saying that he believes the show could’ve gone for “11, 12, 13 seasons,” and that he was advocating for at least 10, but since Dave and Dan are “the ones actually working on it,” eight was the number of seasons eventually settled on. He again referenced the prequels that are in development — one of which, we reported recently, is slated to start filming relatively soon — and that some of them could take place “just 100 years before ‘Game of Thrones,’ some of them 5,000 years before ‘Game of Thrones.’ ” Just a hundred years before? Now, that is intriguing. What do you think that could be?
