As we near the season premiere of Game of Thrones, HBO has found another way to get the word out. It’s launching an “immersive art experience” in which artists will create pieces inspired by iconic moments from the show. It’s called the Art the Throne campaign.
The network has posted five video diaries from the participating artists. Each of them explain their thought processes and give us a look at their work.
Illustrator Marcos Chin explains why he decided to revolve his art project around Brienne of Tarth.
Next, paper sculptor Jeff Nishinaka talks about the process of making White Walkers. He was inspired by the epic final scene from “Hardhome.”
We also have a treat from Brooklyn-based collective Pop Chart Lab, which makes infographics. Their project involves the Red Wedding. Enjoy.
Here, we have LA-Based creative duo CYRCLE, who talk about the power struggle in Westeros and how it relates to their work. They’re crafting a piece of art you could wear.
Finally we have artist Tristan Eaton, who gives Daenerys Targaryen the mural treatment.
The projects will go on display on April 20 at the Angel Orensanz Foundation in New York City, at a private exhibition. It seems as if HBO is reaching out to a much younger audience with Art the Throne. And it’s not just a hipster thing either—the guys from CYRCLE give back and make a difference. They’ve collaborated with many artists, brands and nonprofits, including Pharrell, Chad Muska, and the AIDS Healthcare Foundation.
