Pilou Asbæk talks Euron & Trump, Eugene Simon describes “I choose violence” moment and Jerome Flynn doubts Bronn’s loyalty

Pilou Asbæk discusses Euron’s resemblance to Donald Trump and addresses some fan criticism. Eugene Simon talks about Lancel’s upcoming clash with The Mountain and Jerome Flynn questions Bronn’s loyalty.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Pilou Asbæk addressed the parallels between the political situation on the Iron Islands and the current American Presidential race that Asbæk himself has pointed out.

“I’m not comparing Greyjoy to Trump, but it’s obvious, it’s very close and it’s a fun thing to do,” he said. “Trump starts out by saying, ‘We need to build walls, we need to do this.’ He’s very bombastic in what he’s saying and his approach to the world. Euron was very bombastic, he was humiliating his niece, he was humiliating his nephew with some rhetoric. He wants to make [Pyke] great again.”

Asbæk addressed some of the fandom’s critiques of the show’s adaptation of Euron Greyjoy. First off: the lack of eye patch.

“That was an artistic choice by the writers that they wanted to create their own pirate, their own Euron Greyjoy. But for me, there’s a reason why you have an eye patch. If you go to the history books, pirates would have an eye patch so that when you go below decks, you’d have a trained eye for darkness and one eye trained for sunlight. But if you read the books, Euron has an eye patch for something else. An eye patch would’ve been fun, but it’s also a little cliche.”

Asbæk also conceded that Euron’s plan to build a thousand ships in enough time to beat Yara and Theon to Meereen is, as others have noted, pretty infeasible.

“I think we need a little bit of movie magic to build a thousand ships,” he said. “The last time I checked, there wasn’t a lot of wood in Pyke, so maybe I need to start importing lumber or wood from the North. Do some sort of deal or arrangement with the White Walkers. I give them slaves for the army and they give me wood in return.”

Lastly, Asbæk assured us that, though Euron is intent on killing his niece and nephew, in real life, he gets along very well with Gemma Whelan and Alfie Allen.

“I remember the first night … I left a note at reception for Alfie saying, ‘Theon, your uncle’s here. He’s waiting at the bar.’ We actually sat at that bar for the next four days when we weren’t shooting, discussing acting, discussing life and discussing Game of Thrones. We became very, very good friends. And now I’m very good friends with both Gemma and Alfie.”

Eugene Simon also interviewed with The Hollywood Reporter to tease the much anticipated “I choose violence” moment between Cersei and Robert Strong and Lancel and the Sparrows.

“The feeling of the scene that’s coming in episode eight is one of a huge fight of power going on between Lancel and Cersei … I think what fans should really keep an eye out for is who did it look like is going to break first: the Faith or the Crown? They will see by the end of that scene that there’s still a lot more work to do.”

The scene took two-and-a-half days to shoot and Simon hinted that the final product is going to be pretty nasty.

“…There was a little bit of stunt work that had to be done and some kind of prosthetic work to properly get across the awfulness that happens in it, which was very fun,” he said.

Finally, Jerome Flynn discussed Bronn’s motivation for serving Jaime. He told The Hollywood Reporter that he’s “going along” with Jaime in the hope that Jaime will make good on his promise to reward him with a prettier wife and a larger castle than he was saddled with in season 5. However, Flynn doubts that Bronn’s loyalty goes any deeper than that.

“As much as [Bronn] may enjoy hanging with Jaime a bit, it’s not because he loves him and wants to serve him,” Flynn says. “I get the feeling that Bronn could find himself in battle and switch if he needed to. If the stakes were right or wrong, he could switch. He is looking after his own back.”
