George RR Martin Pauses Winter For Electioneering

For our UK readers, who lived through Brexit a few months ago, you may have heard that the same sort of “where our society goes from here” vote is upon your US friends tomorrow. Unlike your civilized world though, our election season is not government mandated to a controlled period. Instead, it has been ongoing now for nearly 18 months and counting. This strain on the national psyche has created a mental state known as “Trump Anxiety Disorder.” Though that may sound like something that only possesses liberals, I assure you, both sides have it. And the latest victim seems to have been the deadline for The Winds of Winter.

George R.R. Martin stayed relatively silent these past 18 months over the state of the election, though fans might have guessed from earlier liberal leaning statements which side of the nationalist debate he came down on. But over the weekend, the damn broke. It started on November 2nd, when he announced that he’s voted early. It was the kind of typical “even handed” type post you see from celebrities who know that many of their fans don’t share their views, and therefore no offense wants to be given. “I voted, so should you!” One could understand his position. (After all, he does have a LOT of fans, and simple stats would suggest there was no way they’d all share his views.)

But a few days later, the damn broke. On November 4th an enormous screed appeared on his website, urging everyone to vote for Clinton, or at the very least not to vote for Trump. This was partly driven by the fear that New Mexico, which has been solidly blue for this cycle suddenly began to wobble.

In my lifetime, there has never been a presidential candidate more unfit to lead this nation.

You don’t need to like Hillary. You don’t need to listen to what Hillary says about Trump, or what I say about Trump. You just need to listen to Trump. If you can do that, and still consider voting for him… well…

Well indeed. Since then his NotABlog has been punctuated by shorter posts, all of which are very much in the pro-Clinton camp, from a Seth Meyers video, to laughing at the Comey news this weekend that the email nonsense was just that. In between, he’s been getting out the vote.

Yesterday, he admitted outright that Trump Anxiety Disorder has taken over his life.

The election still has me in a state of high anxiety. I am not sleeping well, and I think I check 538 about three dozen times a day, hoping for some good news. Tuesday cannot come fast enough for me. I think I speak for a lot of Americans when I say that I desperately want this thing to be over. It has been SO ugly. Come Tuesday night, I will either be relieved or suicidal. I think I speak for a lot of Americans about that as well.

So when The Winds of Winter doesn’t come by next March, we can lay that too at this feet of this bloody election.
