Game of Thrones’ Jerome Flynn on what drives Bronn and which Lannister brother he prefers

Jaime Bronn Eastwatch

Jerome Flynn’s postman may have stopped talking to him after Bronn brought down Drogon, but it seems plenty of people still want to hear what the Game of Thrones star has to say. Today we bring you highlights from three recent interviews with the would-be dragonslayer and Westeros swim team champion. Read on for Flynn’s thoughts on the possibility of a Tyrion reunion, Bronn’s goals, and what he thinks about a Jon/Daenerys romance.

First, Kim Renfro of Insider asks the important question – is Flynn’s postman still giving him the silent treatment? “Well, I actually haven’t seen him since, but maybe he’s just stopped delivering.” The postman isn’t the only one upset with Flynn in real life, however. Flynn continues, “The response has taken me by surprise…I hadn’t realized how invested people are in terms of what the dragons represent, which goes deep in the human psyche. And the fact that they’re Daenerys’ dragons – you think, ‘Oh they’re indestructible, they’re gonna right the wrongs and fight the good fight for Daenerys,’ and suddenly [laughing] Bronn’s bringing one down in full flight.”

Bronn redeemed himself by rescuing Jaime and then bringing the Lannister brothers together this week, but many fans were hoping for a Bronn/Tyrion reunion. Does Flynn see that happening in a future episode? “I believe that’s gonna happen, yeah. And I think there was a scene there originally but for whatever reason they decided that preempted things. The surprise element of bringing the brothers together was the payoff,” he replies. “Down the road I believe we’ll get a nice bit of Tyrion and Bronn doing their thing and shootin’ the breeze as they do and some of that old dynamic comes back, which is really nice. It’s nice to have that again, because it’s been three or four years since that dynamic’s been there.” Fingers crossed that they both live long enough to make it happen!

Over at The Hollywood Reporter, Flynn discusses the converging of characters this year. “That was a lovely part of the whole season, all of the many reunions and all of the different storylines coming together,” he says. It might not be so lovely for Bronn if he comes face to face with Daenerys though. “That’s a really good point, and something I haven’t fully thought through!” Flynn admits. “But I would like to see him get involved in the big fight. So, Tyrion is there, and there’s a good argument for Bronn. Just as the Tarlys were fighting against them in the big battle sequence, Bronn could argue he’s doing the same. He would be very prepared to bend the knee.” The possibility of being roasted alive may have something to do with it!

How does Flynn feel about being left out of the mix for Jon and company’s adventure beyond the Wall? “I would have loved that. I would have loved it,” he confesses. “I try to avoid scripts, so I didn’t know that was coming. I just read the bits that I need to read. I wasn’t thinking, ‘Oh, I wish I was with them!’ I was just thinking, ‘Wow, this is a great mix of guys to throw together on that journey.’ That’s where my focus was. But of course I would have loved to go out with them.” Given the number of fan favorites that we’ll have to worry about next episode, I’m just fine with Bronn staying safe in the south.

Finally, Flynn dishes to Gothamist about Bronn’s priorities and how long he’ll keep fighting by Jaime’s side. “I think, on the surface, he wants to believe that the right castle and the right woman is gonna be enough to take him away. But also, I think he kind of enjoys being in the thick of it more than he lets on. But, we shall see. But also, maybe that’s cause I want him to be,” he laughs. “I don’t want him to be retired quite yet, so my motivations could be messed up in there.”

Bronn has now fought for both Lannister brothers – which one does Flynn believe Bronn would side with if forced to choose between them? “Well, he might say it depends who pays him the most. But I’ll put it this way: if he was in a battle and found himself in a position of whose life he’s gonna save – who knows, but I probably think it would be Tyrion,” he admits. “I think he can relate to Tyrion in a certain way, and has some respect for him for what he’s been up against in his life, and how Tyrion has dealt with it. He sees it kind of as a mirror of his own life. So I think he’s probably got more respect for Tyrion’s qualities than Jaime’s. And yet, there’s a fun-ness to Jaime, but I think it goes much deeper with Tyrion.” Jaime better get working on that castle he promised if he hopes to keep Bronn’s loyalty!

Flynn also shares his opinion on the relationship developing between Jon and Daenerys, and it seems he’s a Jonerys shipper. “I do approve of it because I think that it’s a perfect pairing and I think she needs some [balance]. I think without somebody like him, and if she doesn’t fall in love, she could actually just be too hard, and get too much like her father,” Flynn explains. “Something’s happening there, and I think that gives hope to Westeros if that happens.”

He does have one pairing he’d prefer, however. “I would have approved more if Bronn had got together with Daenerys. I’m still holding out.”
