Interview Roundup: Pilou Asbæk, Richard Madden and Sean Bean chat about their Game of Thrones characters and Season 8

In a wide range of interviews, Pilou Asbæk raved about season 8 and how he “wish[es he] had been able to come in earlier”, Sean Bean predicted which one of Ned Stark’s progeny will survive the series finale and Richard Madden commented on the lasting impact of Robb Stark’s death.

While discussing his upcoming film, Overlord, with Thrillist, Pilou Asbæk talked about the differences between his character in that movie (a Nazi who turns himself into a zombie) and Euron Greyjoy.

“The thing is … about Euron Greyjoy … I don’t know if he wants to fuck you or kill you. But Wafner? This guy, he will definitely fuck you, and he will hurt you, but he will not kill you. Because it’s a different way of controlling people.”

He also spoke about season 8 (omitting any plots details, sadly) and expressed his pride for the show.

“I can say one thing. When I read all the scripts, I was blown away,” he said. “I’m so happy and I’m so thankful. I’m so proud I got to be a part of something as big as Game of Thrones, and I think in so many ways, it will forever change my life. Even though I have a small role, but nevertheless a significant one. And hopefully in Season 8, I’ll do enough monkey business to make an impact. He’s a funny character. I honestly wish I had been able to come in earlier, and develop him much, much more than I was able to.”

Ned Stark on Game of Thrones

In an interview with Mashable, Sean Bean reflected on Ned Stark’s now iconic death.

“It was a memorable event — a bit of a shock,” Bean said. “I’m proud of all that, though. It’s great to be part of a phenomena, establish this character and then he’s there forever.”

When asked which of the Stark children he expects to survive the finale season of the show, Bean had to refresh his memory of who’s left to pick.

“Jon Snow is left, isn’t he?” he said. “But Arya would have to be it. Yeah Arya will last — maybe she’ll be on the throne.”

Robb's execution of Rickard Karstark

While doing press for his new BBC thriller, The Bodyguard, Richard Madden was asked by Variety how the audience reaction to his tragic character, David, compares to how fans responded to Robb’s death at the Red Wedding.

“People are really engaged with me on ‘Bodyguard,’ which is interesting, and people are heartbroken for this man and where he was in his life,” he said. “I suppose nothing is going to be the same as the reaction to the Robb Stark death, which is a great way to die, and a lot of people are still very heartbroken by that.”

Madden admitted that there’s nothing in particular he’s hoping the eighth season of Game of Thrones will include.

“There’s nothing I want to see. … I think they’ve done it so well, in terms of the amount of time we’ve had “Game of Thrones” and are sitting with it. I think it’s great to come to a great end on this and not run it out [for] another five years — as much as I could watch another five years of it.”
