Production on House of the Dragon is coming along nicely, according to new photos which offer us a peek at costumes as well as a first glimpse of Steve Toussaint as Corlys Velaryon!
The Daily Mail recently published photos of the House of the Dragon cast and crew preparing for a busy day of shooting in Cornwall. Though the photos are a tad grainy and most people’s faces are masked (good on them for prioritizing safety, of course) there’s still a fair bit we can glean from them.
For one thing, two photos offer us our very first look at Toussaint as Corlys Velaryon.
Moreover, we know that filming that day took place at St. Michael’s Mount, which is very, very likely the set for Driftmark, the home base for House Velaryon.
We also got a peek at some of the actors’ headwear as they were transported by boat to St. Michael’s Mount.
The black hats with golden trim are a notable deviation from the costuming styles we saw in Game of Thrones and I, personally, am really excited at the prospect of House of the Dragon showcasing the evolution of Westerosi fashion as it takes us through three centuries of Targaryen history.
Filming continued today, with the Daily Mail providing a few more distant shots. Several more actors and a blue screen are in play, though it’s hard to tell what’s happening, admittedly. We do know that Rhaenyra was present as Emma D’Arcy was spotted once again, bundled up in a coat, with her silver-blonde wig on, ready for shooting. With all the characters clad in black/dark colors, with a sizable group gathered, it may have been for a funeral. Possibly for the sarcophagus seen yesterday on set…
What do you think about Corlys and the new photos? Are you getting excited?

New photos have surfaced from Cornwall where production for House of the Dragon has “allegedly” (lol, it definitely has) begun, giving us a clearer look at House [redacted]’s sigil and hinting at nautical shenanigans.
Twitter user @vv408vm (whom you can also follow on Instagram for ongoing coverage) recently tweeted several photos from Cornwall, one of which gives us a gloriously high-def view of House Velaryon’s sigil.
This essentially confirms strongly supports speculation that St. Michael’s Mount is going to serve as Driftmark, the island home of House Velaryon.
Other photos (@vv408vm doesn’t specify whether they were taken at St. Michael’s Mount or Holywell beach) show the transport and installation of a stone coffin bearing the effigy of a woman.
Whether this is the tomb of a recently deceased character or a long dead member of House Velaryon or Targaryen remains to be seen.
@vv408vm also noted that the wreckage of a ship is under construction and that a wooden rowboat was used in a shoot, which opens the floor to speculation as to when exactly these scenes take place in the timeline.

Off the top of my head, I can’t think of any singularly significant shipwrecks in Targaryen or Velaryon history, though of course Corlys Velaryon loses a nice chunk of his fleet during the Dance of the Dragons … uh, spoilers.
What do you think? Tell us below.

We knew production on House of the Dragon was beginning, but I admit I wasn’t expecting photos to roll in this fast! Show stars Emma D’Arcy (Rhaenyra Targaryen) and Matt Smith (Daemon Targaryen) were spotted filming today on the set that’s been in production for the past week on Holywell Beach in Cornwall. Details below the cut!
Smith and D’Arcy are in full regal Targaryen costuming for shooting. They’re wearing silver-blond wigs (of course) with styling that calls Daenerys and GoT’s Viserys to mind in a very interesting way. The actors shared a scene, speaking together on the beach, and it appeared that D’Arcy then strolled toward the water when the characters finished talking.
The Mail captured a short video clip of the actors on set. We don’t see much but here it is. You never know if one of our eagle-eyed readers will spy something!
I absolutely love this photo of Emma on the beach. They’re giving me strong queen vibes.
Visit the Daily Mail to see their complete coverage and to view more photos!
Also of interest is an upturned shipwrecked hull being set up by carpenters on the location. The hull is being brought in in sections across the beach on especially laid track, according to a photographer who spotted it. The presence of a shipwreck gives a hint that we’re still looking at Driftmark. A leftover wreck from a battle points to the Battle of the Gullet, based on the timing, and of course we saw the sigil of House Velaryon last week close-by. Sometimes one shooting location will serve as multiple places, but in this instance it looks likely that this site is serving as one place: Driftmark and the home of the Velaryons.
Thanks to JoeMagician for the finds tonight!

Well, we can finally start referring to House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones spinoff centered on the Targaryens and their infamous civil war, as “in production,” because photos tweeted and ‘grammed from official accounts today left no doubt. This series is off the ground, folx!
After several eyebrow-lifting tweets from the official HBO Max and Game of Thrones Twitter accounts earlier today had us wondering a) Are they just trolling? or b) If this is leading to an announcement, stop before it gets as bad as the block of ice promo, GoT made it OFFICIAL-official by tweeting out the above photo and the simple message “Fire will reign”: HoTD is in production as of today.
Immediately after, the House of the Dragon Twitter account sent out a series of photos, mostly of the “main” cast, at what looks like a table read:
Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower.

HBO UK tweeted out the same photos, as did HoTD‘s Instagram account, along with confirmation that the show will indeed premiere in 2022.
We’re SO excited to have the official word that this series is taking wing (heh) and we can dive back into the heady waters of speculation — and even more excited for HoTD to premiere next year! Stay tuned and we’ll share everything we find out as soon as we find it!
The post Beginning of Production on ‘House of the Dragon’ Confirmed by HBO! appeared first on Watchers on the Wall.
Yes, I technically have to use words like “rumored” and “possibly,” because technically there’s been no confirmation that the busy activity in Cornwall we reported on earlier this week is for the much-anticipated Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon.
Pre-production activity for something being filmed by Warner Bros. — the company that owns HBO — has been taking place in Cornwall this week, including on St. Michael’s Mount, an island that features a 12th century castle. One of the structures being built there is a huge stone archway that looks quite Thrones-esque, and when CornwallLive’s photographer captured the initial shots zoomed in on the top of the arch, something very intriguing was visible:
It doesn’t look like much…until you compare it to known sigils of Houses of Westeros, and then there’s really only one that looks awfully similar: the silver-and-green seahorse of House Velaryon.
It’s also worth noting that St. Michael’s Mount is a “tidal island,” which is only accessible during low tide — during high tide, the road or path that leads to the island is under water. And “high tide” sounds familiar when talking about the Velaryons…oh right! It’s because the castle of House Velaryon at the time of the Dance of the Dragons is called High Tide!
*insert Michael-from-The-Office-yelling-“It’s happening!!” gif here*
Again, technically there is no confirmation for any of this, and yes, it could be a horse and not a seahorse. But we know for a fact that we’ll be seeing House Velaryon, who were among House Targaryen’s staunchest supporters for generations, in HoTD, which centers on the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons (a conflict in which the Velaryons were also heavily involved). So this seems a bit too coincidental, especially for us diehard Velaryon fans who have always longed to see them on screen.
Speaking of castles, a different castle in Cornwall is also being prepped for…something, according to CornwallLive who shared photos in the same article as the one above.
A local business that specializes in residential building projects tweeted a photo of Restormel Castle stating it was for “fairy tale” filming.
Is “fairy tale” cover story/code for something more Westerosi-inspired? Or is it a totally unrelated project that really is, well, just a fairy tale? At this point, there’s no way to tell, but the timing seems interesting. Stay tuned to see if we hear more about this one.
The post A familiar sigil spotted at ‘House of the Dragon’ filming site appeared first on Watchers on the Wall.
We were pretty certain that production on House of the Dragon, the Targaryen-focused Game of Thrones prequel, was slated to start soon, if the show is to stick to its 2022 release — and recent news means we just might be watching that production unfold!
CornwallLive.com reported on April 20 that trucks bearing the “Warner Bros” logo were seen unloading and setting up film equipment. including wheeled lighting rigs, near Penhale Camp, near Holywell, Newquay. Naturally, people on site were not able to say what was being filmed or provide any further details.
Filming activity was also spotted at St. Michael’s Mount, a tidal island in Cornwall’s Mount’s Bay that is home to stunning vistas and a castle that dates to the 12th century. Crews of people could be seen building sets and rigging film equipment, and large tents that also appear to have been set up by the crews were seen. Most tantalizingly, a giant stone archway that looks QUITE Thrones-ish was being built.
Although we suppose this activity could be for any WB project, it’s very likely that this is pre-production for HoTD — it was reported that the show the would be filmed in the UK at Leavesden Studios, which is owned by Warner Bros. Additionally, casting calls from earlier this month asked for “Men and women of all ethnicities, ages and looks to film Cornwall on a medieval drama. Ideally, we are looking for men with longer hair and beards and women with long natural hair, so no obvious dye or highlights.”
What do you think? Is this the first glimpse of HoTD filming? Let us know your thoughts!
