Maisie Williams says that season 7 will end on a “huge cliffhanger”

Arya

Maisie Williams hints at the Game of Thrones endgame and talks about her post-Thrones plans.

In an interview with TimeOut, 19-year old Williams discussed the upcoming seventh season of Game of Thrones and described it, albeit vaguely, as the beginning of the end.

“It’s just kind of tumbling now,” she said. “We’ve come to the climax and it’s rolling down to the end. It’s exciting. I really felt like at the end of last season everything was set up for how it was going to end. Every character came to a little junction in their lives. Now we’re all going to crash down together to however this show ends.”

She also added that season 7 will end on “A huge cliffhanger.”

In the event that Arya survives into season 8, Williams said she plans to get a tattoo to commemorate the accomplishment.

‘There are rumors that if you make it from season one to season eight there’s a tattoo that we all get,” she said. “We’re all waiting to see if we do make it. I was lucky enough to be in season one, even the pilot episode. If I do make it to season eight I will get it. It would be rude not to!”

Williams said the prospect of a post-Thrones life is “scary” but also exciting.

“I’ve felt restricted at times in my career so far,” she admitted. “Restricted in my own life and my career, because there’s six months of the year every year that are taken up shooting this TV show. I don’t mean restricted in a negative way. It’s just pretty honest.

“It’s quite exciting now Game of Thrones is coming to an end because it means I can do whatever I want. If I want to go away for three years and travel the world I can. I can do anything. I can financially do whatever I want to do and physically will not be tied into anything. I’ve never had that.”

Kit Harington wants to avoid getting typecast in “surly heroic” roles

Life has been pretty great for Kit Harington. From plays to feature films to his lucrative role as Jon Snow on Game of Thrones, the 30-year-old English actor has a lot of irons in the fire.

In a new interview with Elle Magazine, Harington opens up about playing Jon Snow, how he and his castmates kill time during filming, and why he wants to hang out with Big Bird. For real.

Jon vs. Kit

Jon Snow is famous for his bravery, his mystery, and his signature pouty look. It’s a fine role, but like any good actor, Kit Harington is well aware that becoming identified with one character can lead to typecasting, and it’s something he’s guarding against.

Jon is a hero. He’s a good person, he’s a moral person—a somewhat solemn person—so I get a lot of those surly heroic roles. I’ve learned to try to avoid those now. Otherwise I’m just going to go insane.

It seemed he learned his lesson from the last time he accepted a surly heroic role.

Now, Harington has his sights set on other genres. “I’d like to do comedy, but I don’t want to do romantic comedy. I’m not a romantic comedy guy,” he says. Although we can totally see him in a Love Actually kind of story, we’ll respect his wishes. And he certainly has the chops for non-romantic comedies. In 2015, he starred alongside Andy Samberg in the HBO Sports mockumentary 7 Days in Hell, where he played dimwitted tennis wunderkind Charles Poole.

Life on Set

Harington recently spent some time filming Season 7 in Iceland, and while you might think that would be cold and burdensome, Harington actually enjoyed it.

You’re usually in the back end of nowhere. The whole crew and cast is in one hotel. There’s no bar down the road you can go to; there’s no restaurant. You stop at four in the afternoon when it gets dark, and you have the whole evening to kill. That sounds claustrophobic and dull, but it’s wondrous because you’re with this family.

Spending so much time with one another in isolated regions encourages bonding. “Everyone comes out of their shell because they can’t sit in front of their screens. You have to talk. People bring out board games, instruments.” Apparently Harington plays “percussion” but didn’t give too many details beyond saying the production has “a little group.” I’m just going to go ahead and picture Emilia Clarke on electric guitar and Kristofer Hivju (Tormund Giantsbane) on vocals.

jon-snow-ygritte-wildlings-beyond-the-wall

What about the board games? “I play Risk,” he says, “It’s about conquering countries. It’s basically Game of Thrones on a board game. It’s Method.”

Being huddled up with so many cast and crew members can also lead to romance. Harington, for example, is in a long-term relationship with his on-screen wildling sweetheart Rose Leslie, aka Ygritte. Harington says he became an actor for the craft of it, not the ladies, although that can be a side benefit. “There’s something about being a show-off, and that gets you attention. And attention gets you the opposite sex sometimes.”

As for what’s next for Harington, he’d like to follow in castmate Peter Dinklage’s footsteps and star on an episode of Sesame Street! He says it’s because it was basically the only TV show he watched as a kid. “That would be a dream for me. I’d be quite starstruck by the puppets.”

You’re welcome for that.

Kit Harington on avoiding “surly heroic” roles and wanting to appear on Sesame Street

Snow

Kit Harington chats about on-location Game of Thrones camaraderie, typecasting concerns, crying on planes and his love of Sesame Street.

In an interview with Elle Magazine, Harington discussed the sense of community that the Game of Thrones cast and crew develop during production in Iceland. When asked if he found filming in remote locations lonely, he answered:

“I love it. Everyone comes out of their shell because they can’t sit in front of their screens. You have to talk. People bring out board games, instruments.

While on the subject of Thrones, Harington expressed a desire to expand beyond the Jon Snow archetype.

Like every actor, you get notorious for maybe one role and then get offered a lot of similar roles. Jon is a hero; he’s a good person, he’s a moral person—a somewhat solemn person—so I get a lot of those surly heroic roles. I’ve learned to try to avoid those now. Otherwise I’m just going to go insane. I’d like to do comedy, but I don’t want to do romantic comedy. I’m not a romantic comedy guy. But I’d like to play someone really fucked up. People who are right on the edge.

The interview also included non-Game of Thrones topics, of course. It turns out, for example, that we owe the toilet euphemism “john” to Harington’s ancestor, John Harington, who invented the first flushing toilet for Queen Elizabeth I. “[My family] also wrote the queen a lot of bad poetry. I’ve inherited the bad poetry genes, but not the inventor genes,” he said.

When asked about the last time he had a good cry, Harington admitted that he always cries on planes. “There’s something romantic about being on a plane going somewhere, being at that altitude.… I like a good cry every now and then.”

His most recent airborne sob took place while watching Eye in the Sky. “Alan Rickman had died, and I saw him in this movie—and that made me very upset,” he said. “That was a while ago. I need a cry.”

While discussing children’s television, Harington expressed interest in appearing on Sesame Street. He said he was a massive Sesame Street fan as a child, partly because it was the only show his mother let him watch when he was home sick from school in order to discourage him from wanting to stay home.

“It backfired on Mum, because I would want to stay home just to watch Sesame Street,” he said. In fact, I was talking to Peter Dinklage the other day, and he said he’d been on the show and I was like—you can put this in print—I want to be on Sesame Street. That would be a dream for me. I’d be quite starstruck by the puppets.”

UFC champion Conor McGregor denies having a role on Game of Thrones Season 7

(Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

Pump the brakes. It appears that, contrary to prior reports, UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor is not appearing on Game of Thrones Season 7.

If you’re just now hopping on this weird news train, here’s the story: rumors about McGregor scoring a cameo role on Game of Thrones Season 7 surfaced a couple of months back. Then, very reliable fansite Watchers on the Wall not only reported that the rumors were true, but revealed details about his role. Per the site, McGregor would be playing a pirate on board Euron Greyjoy’s ship, the Silence. UFC president Dana White even appeared to confirm McGregor’s participation during an interview with Fox Sports Live, where he said of McGregor’s cameo, “I’m glad he did it. It’ll be great.”

However, now McGregor himself has dumped cold water on the theory. Asked during the Q&A portion of his An Evening with Conor McGregor PPV event, McGregor set the record strait, claiming that while he was offered a role shortly after his victory over Nate Diaz in August of 2016, he didn’t take it.

Dana’s saying, ‘These guys want you to be in Game of Thrones.’ And I’m sitting there banged up…my legs in bits, and he’s trying to offer me a Game of Thrones role. I’m looking at them, saying…‘I’m not trying to be in show-business, I’m trying to be in the fight business. Come at me with a real number to fight again!’ That was the only time I’ve ever heard the word Game of Thrones, and then it went everywhere!…I don’t know where that came from, but I have never been in contact with nobody from Game of Thrones, about starring in Game of f—king Thrones! That’s that! Don’t believe everything you hear.

McGregor also said he turned down the lead role in an upcoming remake of Predator, so it sounds like he’s committing to not trying to be show business.

We tend to believe the verbose fighter…with a grain of salt. McGregor is prone to making wild statements, such as his claim that his An Evening with Conor McGregor PPV boasted a larger attendance than the UFC’s Fight Night in Denver. (Numbers say otherwise.) And we remember how the Game of Thrones cast members had to lie through their teeth every day for months about Jon Snow’s Season 6 resurrection…

For better or worse, the rumor is out there, and we may have to wait until Game of Thrones Season 7 debuts on HBO this summer to find out the truth.

The Game of Thrones Valentine’s Day Gift Guide!

giftguide

Romance isn’t the first subject that comes to mind when we think of Game of Thrones. And yet the show has its moments when love shines through the warring and darker aspects of the world. (Of course, the canonical romances of GoT often have a complicated twist, and are plagued by misfortune, death, or close blood relation. This is George R.R. Martin, after all.) It’s not all gloom and doom, and with the holiday ahead, we have romance on the brain today.

Valentine’s Day is coming up in just a couple weeks. Why not make the holiday fun by adding Game of Thrones gifts to your shopping list? To make it simpler, we’ve compiled a few of our favorite ideas this year for your enjoyment.

Dothraki couple rings

Photo: TimArtCreations

Jewelry is always a popular choice on Valentine’s Day, and we love these Dothraki couple’s rings. This beautifully crafted set of rings display the words Daenerys Targaryen and Khal Drogo spoke to one another: jalan atthirari anni (“Moon of my life”), and shekh ma shieraki anni (“My sun and stars”). The set comes with one silver and one black ring, has different font options, and can be further engraved. ($59.00)

MEY Dragon RingA more luxurious jewelry option this year is a piece from MEY‘s Daenerys line, created in collaboration with Game of Thrones costume designer Michele Clapton and inspired by the Khaleesi Handwrap made for season 6. The Dragon Storm Single Dragon Ring is a unique item, a dragon skeleton curled around the ring. This particular piece was created by modeling a full dragon, and then carving away to end with the skeleton, leaving you with a strong and modern feel. The Mey rings are available in sizes S, M and L, which are US ring sizes 6, 7 and 8. ($240.00)

game-of-thrones-stark-cufflinks_670Here’s a great gift to dress up shirts in a fun way for the Game of Thrones nerd in your life- the House Stark Cuff Links. Created by London designer Gallant & Beau, the cuff links feature the Direwolf sigil of House Stark. They also come in House Targaryen variety if that’s where your loyalties lie. ($35.00)

For those of you buying for a book-loving fan, check out the  George R. R. Martin Quote Necklaces created by LiteraryGiftsUK on Etsy. A wide variety of beloved quotes from the A Song of Ice and Fire series are available in jewelry form. Presented on aged-style paper with a glass dome, the pendants can also be purchased as keyrings. (Keychain version, $9.04, 16-inch chain necklace $10.01, 24-inch chain necklace, $10.65)

House Stark stemless wine glassesIf there’s anything universal in the Game of Thrones world, it’s the character’s love of wine. And certainly fans need a lot to drink sometimes to get through the particularly brutal episodes. That’s why the House Stark Stemless Wine Glasses (A Set of 2) are a thoughtful gift. This year, toast one another and the Starks as well, who are on the rise in the North. The wolves will come again, and they’ll be thirsty when they get there. ($14.99)

I Drink and I Know Things mugYou could go for the Lannister variation of stemless glasses instead. After all, no one brandishes a cup of wine like a Lannister!

Speaking of which- this next gift features Tyrion’s most on-point quote from last season’s second episode, “Home.” The two things Tyrion does best, neatly encapsulated in the “I Drink and I Know Things Mug.” The handmade wooden beer mug comes with the notorious quote engraved on a copper plaque. The sturdy mug holds 23oz of liquid of your choice, be it beer, ale or water for the mornings after. ($29.99)

game-of-thrones-ghost-direwolf-plush_670If you’re flying solo this year, no worries. Cuddle with something soft and cute- this Ghost direwolf plush! The sizable collectible plush, based on Jon Snow’s intimidating grown direwolf, is 18 inches long, and about nine inches tall. Normally Ghost will set you back $30 but right now he’s on sale for $15.00 in the HBO Store.

In a ghoulishly amusing coincidence, the Direwolf Plush Cubs for Grey Wind, Summer, Shaggydog, and Lady are all half off in the HBO Store. Gone but not forgotten! ($10.00)

Game of Thrones Clue
If your idea of the perfect Valentine’s Day is game night, go for the official Game of Thrones Clue! The classic whodunit game is transformed for GoT fans with a double-sided game board including two locations: the Red Keep in King’s Landing, and Meereen in Essos. Six people can join the game, playing as characters from the show. ($42.98 on Amazon)

4DCityscape’s Game of Thrones Puzzle of Essos is another great option for the fan who loves the intricate world of Ice and Fire. The multilayered map puzzle challenges you to recreate the geography of the continent of Essos, while 3D replicas, flags, and house sigils bring the locations to life. The puzzle includes memorable sites such as Braavos, Pentos, Meereen, Valyria, Astapor and many more. (On sale for $49.99 at the moment!)

game-of-thrones-longclaw-letter-opener_670Here’s one of my favorite pieces of Game of Thrones merch. While the ValyrianSteel full-size sword replicas are amazing, they can be a little pricey for the average fan. Instead, why not go for the nine-inch Longclaw Letter Opener? This one will only set you back $23.99, with its die-cast metal handle and stainless steel blade, while still displaying style and love for Jon Snow and House Mormont. And yes, it does actually open letters, if you want it to. Though mostly I like to play with mine, and pretend to kill miniature White Walkers.

There’s no shortage of shirt options if you’re in the market for a Thrones one this holiday, but we’re partial to the Night’s Watch (obviously). Pledge your life and honor to defending the Wall with this comfortable cotton T-shirt, depicting the Night’s Watch oath. ($12.97 on sale)

Stannis Baratheon Dark Horse figure

The newest addition to the Dark Horse line of Game of Thrones collectible figures this year is everyone’s favorite grumpy king, Stannis Baratheon. The 8-inch figure shows the Mannis in his flaming-heart breastplate, with all the detail we’ve come to expect from DH collectibles. ($27.99)

There’s one more option that Valentine’s Day celebrants might find intriguing- cooking for their Game of Thrones fan an authentic Westerosi meal! The good folks at the Inn at the Crossroads have researched the foods from A Song of Ice and Fire, often spotted in Game of Thrones, and produced their own recipes. Bake Sansa’s favorite Lemon Cakes for dessert, or have some of Manderly Pie for dinner..naturally with a key substitution.

Have your own Game of Thrones or A Song of Ice and Fire suggestions for the holiday? Feel free to share them in comments!

SAG Awards Game of Thrones Interview Round-Up

Game-Thrones-Cast-2017-SAG-Awards

After the glitz and glamour of the 2017 Screen Actor’s Guild AwardsWatchers on the Wall are here to bring you the best of last night’s Game of Thrones cast interviews!

E!News caught up with Gwendoline Christie, who discusses her gorgeous red-carpet look before describing her beautifully bizarre vision for Season Seven, which involves all the characters getting cars.  Brienne drives a monster truck, naturally.

Meanwhile Variety had a quick chat with Nathalie Emmanuel, who describes working on the show as faultless and ‘the coolest.’

Entertainment Tonight spoke with Maisie Williams, who hopes to do justice to her final scenes as Arya, with Game of Thrones concluding in 2018.  In the mean time she’s enjoying awards season as it’s a chance to hang out with all the different cast members she doesn’t normally see on set. (The footage dropped into the video around the :30 mark isn’t season 7 material; funny enough, it was taken from a fan-made trailer, and some of it isn’t GoT at all!)

Finally, Studio 10 chatted to Liam Cunningham.  The actor jokes that George R. R. Martin is pressuring him to read the books as he wants a ‘full report’ on Liam’s opinion, and also mentions the creative freedom given to D.B. Weiss and David Benioff now that the show has surpassed its source material.

Actors tease Game of Thrones Season 7 at the SAG Awards

Plenty of Game of Thrones cast members were in Los Angeles last night for the 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, and while the show only took home one of the three awards for which it was nominated, the actors looked smashing on the red carpet, and plenty stopped to do interviews. Let’s have a watch.

Talking to Entertainment Tonight, Maisie Williams (Arya) answered more questions about what she expects life to be like after Game of Thrones, saying she’s equal parts scared and excited. “I’m just trying to do the last few seasons that I have justice. I’m just trying to shape Arya the way that I have been so far and give her a nice arc to end with and hope that people are happy with it.” Well, that sounds like someone who’s going to live to see Season 8, at least.

Liam Cunningham (Davos Seaworth) was also on hand, and had a fun interview with Angela Bishop of Studio 10.

A couple of talking points:

  • The production is “almost finished” shooting Season 7.
  • Cunningham hasn’t read the Song of Ice and Fire novels, and says that George R.R. Martin occasionally teases him about it by demanding “a full report.” I hope that’s not a joke.
  • Now that the show is beyond the books, showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have “a bit more artistic freedom” with how they craft the story.

Moving on to members of Team Daenerys, Nathalie Emmanuel (Missandei) waxes euphoric to Variety about working on what is, so as she’s concerned, the coolest show in the world…

…and Jacob Anderson (Grey Worm) says what he can about what to expect from Season 7. Obviously, that’s not a lot, but he does say that it’s “a very exciting season” and that there’ll be “a lot of unexpected turns.”

Finally, here’s a video of a hilarious moment where Sophie Turner is eating her meal, realizes she’s on camera and gets embarrassed while Maisie Williams laughs.

Happy SAGs.

Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones cast loses at Screen Actors Guild Awards

Game of Thrones actors hit the red carpet at the Screen Actors Guild Awards

The Game of Thrones cast members are out in force at the 2017 Screen Actors Guild Awards, currently underway at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Check out the nominees here, and check below to see some of our favorite performers on the red carpet.

As ever, Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner step out in style. That dark shade of lipstick Williams is wearing is particularly striking.

And now, a slow pan:

Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth) has long been interested in fashion, and appears tonight in a daring black sequined jumpsuit.

Christie grabbed photos with several of her fellow cast members, including Turner…

…and Liam Cunningham (Davos).

Brienne’s promise to bring justice to Renly’s murderers waits…for now.

The members of the newly minted Team Daenerys all made splashes. Peter Dinklage turned up in a smart, all-black suit.

Michael Huisman (Daario Naharis), making what could be his final turn at the SAGs as a cast member on Game of Thrones, was also looking dapper.

Nathalie Emmanuel (Missandei) stepped out in a vividly patterned dress, and spoke to Variety about what it’s like working on the most popular show on the earth.

And now a new member of Team Daenerys: Alfie Allen.

Clearly, they were at the cool table.

Game of Thrones showrunner David Benioff was on hand as well.

The cast of Game of Thrones turned out in style this evening for the 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. The show was nominated for three awards, and the cast support was strong, with many GoT stars walking the red carpet.

Game of Thrones kicked off the SAG Awards by winning a prize before the ceremony even began! Once again, the show snagged the prize for Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series, which is awarded from the red carpet. With the incredible work in season 6 on episodes like “Battle of the Bastards,” jam-packed with action and stunt players, it’s no surprise that GoT triumphed in this area.

Game of Thrones also competed in the Drama Ensemble category, with the award going to Stranger Things. Peter Dinklage was nominated tonight for the Male Actor in a Drama Series Award, but lost to John Lithgow of The Crown.

Maisie Williams on Spoiling Game of Thrones: “It’s such a childish, annoying thing to do.”

arya needle

Leaks and spoilers have become a way of life for Game of Thrones fans, and part of our filming season viewing experience, albeit a controversial one. Thrones star Maisie Williams does not care for this particular aspect of fandom, however, sharing her feelings with Radio Times today in a new interview.

When it comes to Game of Thrones spoilers leaking out in advance of the new season, Williams tells RT, “It really, really upsets me…Because, there’s only a certain group of people who’d look at that anyway, compared to the audience that watches the show. It hurts. It’s just like, oh we wanted to tell this story, and yeah, lots of people don’t want to read it, and don’t want to look at it. But then it’s even more annoying when you know [the leaks] might be from someone on the inside, and it’s just like… you’re trying to make something really cool, that is really cool, and people really like, and it’s like ‘stop ruining it’.”

The actress explains that she feels, “It’s such a childish, annoying thing to do. And yeah, it’s sad. It really annoys me,” and further adds adds, “I don’t know if that’s unexpected, that I’d be like ‘Oh, I don’t really mind!’ People still watch it, but it does really grind my gears.”

Williams is correct; it’s not unexpected that she’d be a bit irritated with fans spoiling surprises, though after seven years’ worth of filming, you’d think she would develop a thicker skin by now. There’s a symbiotic relationship between Game of Thrones and its fandom, and the passion for spoilers has in a roundabout way helped support the show’s rise to the most popular television program in the world.

WiC Weekly: January 22-29

What’s happening in the wide world of Game of Thrones? Let’s find out. This is WiC Weekly.

First up, there are rumblings of a release date for Game of Thrones Season 7, but take a beat before you believe the hype.

Although it’s winding down now, Kit Harington was in Iceland this past week to film some of his Game of Thrones cast member buddies.

Maisie Williams had a busy week, on the promotional trail as she is for her new Netflix movie, iBoy. Naturally, interviewers couldn’t let her go without a couple of questions about Game of Thrones.

Although filming on Season 7 is nearly complete, we’re still hearing new casting information.

And in casting news that could have been but wasn’t, we learned something interesting about longtime Game of Thrones cast member Conleth Hill.

Looking for something that’s not Game of Thrones but still kind of Game of Thrones-related to get you through the next couple of months? We have a recommendation.

People are always busy over at IMDb…

In books, we got some solid information about new writing from George R.R. Martin! Unfortunately, it’s not the release date of The Winds of Winter, but it’s still cause to get excited.

Game of Thrones is everywhere, even on street corners.

Finally, we discuss the worst moments from the most recent season of Game of Thrones. Hey, it’s not a perfect show.

Game of Thrones’ “Battle of the Bastards” nominated for three Golden Reel awards

The praise and awards continue to pile up for Season 6 of Game of Thrones, and this time around its the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ (MPSE) Golden Reel awards. The MPSE singled out “Battle of the Bastards” for particular praise, nominating the episode in three separate categories per The Hollywood Reporter. The 64th annual Golden Reels award show will be held Feb. 19 at the Westin Bonaventure in Los Angeles, CA.

Hollywood has its share of award shows that recognize the overall achievements of its television and filmmaking endeavors, along with groups that focus on specific aspects of filmmaking, such as the Visual Effects Society, or in this case the MPSE. The MPSE is an organization “dedicated to improving the recognition of its members by educating the public and the rest of the filmmaking community as to the artistic merit of sound editing.”

Game of Thrones as Myth: Ser Davos as the Archetypal Sage

What is an archetype? In fantasy and myth, certain types of characters constantly reappear: stalwart Heroes, odd Mentors offering talismans, Threshold Guardians and their tests, and more. In this series, we take a fast and fun look at Game of Thrones characters and what traditional archetypes they fall into. This time: Ser Davos Seaworth.

This series examines how Game of Thrones characters fit into the archetypal frameworks developed by mythologist Joseph Campbell (The Hero with a Thousand Faces) and the more modern version by Christopher Vogler (The Writer’s Journey). Both Campbell and Vogler employ the works of psychiatrist Carl G. Jung. Along with many other academics, Jung suggested that the archetypes of myth and legend sprang from a human collective unconscious, since they appear in so many different cultures separated by space and time.

“In describing these common character types, symbols and relationships, the Swiss psychologist Carl G. Jung employed the term ‘archetypes,’ meaning ancient terms of personality that are the shared heritage of the human race.” —Christopher Vogler

Campbell argues that human beings are biologically hardwired to understand the symbolism and expression of character archetypes. Otherwise, we would be incapable of participating in the shared human experience of storytelling.

“Summoned or not, the God will come.” —Motto over the door of Carl G. Jung’s house

As we segue into Game of Thrones, it’s important to remember that archetype is not a straightjacketed category but rather a flexible function of storytelling. Any individual character can (and usually does) express various archetypal traits or even moves from one category to another as the story unfolds.

The Game of Thrones character of Ser Davos Seaworth is an experienced man who fills a number of archetypal roles. Davos is heavily representative of the Mentor and Protector archetypes, but his main purpose is to offer his wisdom to a leader he believes in. That makes him primarily a Sage.

The Sage, or Wise Old Man archetype, need not be old nor male—all it need do is serve its archetypal function. Per Jung, the Sage is an ancient and common archetypal figure, a brilliant philosopher known for his or her solid wisdom and judgement. This does not mean the character is perfect or lacks moral shortcomings, but Sages usually have the capacity to recognize their own flaws even if they cannot overcome them. Jung specifically identified this archetype as the Senex (Latin for ‘old man’), an ancient Roman title originally given to respected family elders in a village. In The Hero With a Thousand Faces, Joseph Campbell describes the Wise Old Man as follows:

…the Wise Old Man of myths and fairy tales whose words assist the hero through the trials and terrors of the weird adventure. He is the one who appears and points to the magic shining sword that will kill the dragon-terror, tells of the waiting bride and the castle of many treasures, applies healing balm to the almost fatal wounds,  and finally dismisses the conqueror, back into the world of normal life, following the great adventure into the enchanted night.

Ser Davos is highly valued by both Stannis Baratheon and later Jon Snow, two leaders who instinctively understand the value of his council. Unlike many Game of Thrones characters, Davos doesn’t struggle with complicated personal motivations. He has the wisdom to know who he is and what his limitations are. He wants to serve his king and what’s right. The honorable modus operandi has not served the Stark family well, but Davos has survived through a combination of good luck and a grounding in practicality. Unlike King Arthur’s great wizard-sage, Merlin, Ser Davos has not one bit of the supernatural in him. He’s a mortal man who knows how to move in the corridors of the powerful, and in this capacity his advice is invaluable.

When Ser Davos is introduced in “The North Remembers” (S2, Ep1), his Sage-like characteristics are immediately established. For example, when Maester Cressen expresses his fears that Stannis Baratheon and Melisandre are leading them into war, Davos displays his unyielding loyalty: “Stannis is our king. We follow where he leads, even if we don’t like the path.” Later, we see Davos’ common sense as he tries to help Stannis strategize: “Your grace, the Lannisters are the true enemy. If, for the time being, you could make peace with your brother …” Stannis interrupts Davos, but the counsel is good.

Like Morpheus in The Matrix trilogy, Davos can offer his hero the red pill or the blue one, but he cannot make him swallow. Just being there is everything. Even though Davos’ position as Stannis’ chief councilor is being usurped by Melisandre, Davos remains steadfast in his secular devotion to his king, as seen in a discussion with his son Matthos in “The Night Lands” (S2, Ep2):

You want me to have a god? Fine. King Stannis is my god. He raised me up and blessed me with his trust. He gave you a future I could never have imagined. You know how to read, you’ll be a knight some day. You think a fire-god commanded all that? It was Stannis, only Stannis.

There are many parallels between the character of Davos and the famous ancient Greek character of Odysseus (Latin Ulysses), who appears in Homer’s Iliad and The Odyssey. As the king of Ithaca, Odysseus is known as a man of immense wisdom, shrewdness, eloquence and negotiating ability. He’s constantly called upon to calm squabbles among the Greeks, and is instrumental in settling a major dispute between Agamemnon and Achilles. Like Davos, Odysseus is a brave fighter, and is capable of cunning and subterfuge. When the 10-year siege of Troy fails, Odysseus is the man who conceives the famous deception of the Trojan Horse. As a former smuggler, Davos knows something about sneaking hidden cargo across enemy lines, as he did for Stannis’ during the siege of Storm’s End during Robert’s Rebellion.

Davos further proves his use as a counsellor when convinces the Iron Bank to loan Stannis the money he needs to push his claim on the Iron Throne. Stannis turns north, and Davos is at his side when he crushes Mance Rayder’s army. After Jon Snow is elected the new Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, Davos gives him sage advice in Season 5’s “High Sparrow”:

Davos: “The shield that guards the realms of men. That’s what you swore to be. Now I’m not a learned man, but the best way to help most people might not be sitting in a frozen castle at the edge of the world. It just might mean wading in the muck, getting your boots dirty and doing what needs to be done.”

Jon Snow: “And what needs to be done?”

Davos: “As long as the Boltons rule the North, the North will suffer. Just one man’s opinion.”

Mel, Davos and Jon at Castle Black

Davos has already become a wise counselor to Jon Snow, even though he’s still in Stannis’ employ. As a Sage, it’s in his nature to give sound advice.

When Jon Snow is assassinated, Davos is the first to recognize something wrong in Ghost’s cries, and it is Davos who gathers the loyalist black brothers together to defend Jon’s body. Davos shows his dry Odysseus-like wit here when he draws his sword: “I’ve never been much of a fighter. Apologies for what you’re about to see” (“Home,” S6, Ep2). Davos is also instrumental in convincing Melisandre to attempt Jon’s resurrection, and is the first person to see him breathing again. After that, Jon recognizes Davos’ ability as a counselor and brings him into his inner circle, particularly after he sways young Lyanna Mormont to Jon’s cause in Season 6’s “The Broken Man.” “Jeor Mormont and Jon Snow both understood that the real war isn’t between a few squabbling houses,” he tells her. “It’s between the living and the dead. And make no mistake my lady, the dead are coming.” It’s hard not to be on board after that.

Like Odysseus, Morpheus and Gandalf in the The Lord of the Rings, we’ve seen that Davos is a Sage who can swing a weapon if he has to, and he fights alongside Jon at the Battle of the Bastards. But mostly, his role is that of counsellor in service to his master of choice. Even when he powerfully wants something, as when he wants to execute Melisandre after her murder of Shireen comes to light in Season 6’s “The Winds of Winter,” he obeys the will of his leader, Jon Snow, and allows her to go into exile.

PSYCHOLOGICAL FUNCTION OF THE SAGE

The elder, or Sage archetype, represents the hero’s journey towards self-realization. The Sage may not be able to accomplish the journey himself, but he knows the way. In Ser Davos we see a man who is wise and street-smart, a natural counselor who can guide a hero through the treacherous politics of a world at war. Davos also recognizes his own shortcomings, even advertising his past as a smuggler by keeping his fingertips (severed by Stannis as punishment for said smuggling crimes) in a pouch around his neck.

Melisandre and Davos

Another important function of the Sage is his ability to accept reality. For example, Davos is a secular character who puts little stock in magic and religion, but he cannot deny that Melisandre has extraordinary powers after he sees her birth a murderous shadow creature in Season 2’s “Garden of Bones.” That allows him to overcome his disbelief and confusion and petition Melisandre to resurrect Jon Snow in Season 6’s “Home.”

Melisandre: “The great victory I saw in the flames, all of it was a lie. You were right all along. The Lord never spoke to me.”

Davos: “Fuck him, then. Fuck all of them. I’m not a devout man, obviously. Seven Gods, Drowned Gods, Tree Gods, it’s all the same. I’m not asking the Lord of Light for help. I’m asking the woman who showed me that miracles exist.”

Davos, as the Sage, accepts the truth, no matter how much he might want things to be otherwise.

DRAMATIC FUNCTION OF THE SAGE

The Sage can serve many dramatic functions, so let’s look at Davos specifically. The Sage, like the Mentor, is usually a teacher, and often takes part in a master/apprentice relationship. Like one of mythology’s greatest sages, the Greek centaur Chiron from the Iliad, Davos has an instinct for nurturing young people. He is very protective of and empathetic with Stannis’ daughter Shireen, although in their case, the teacher/student roles are reversed, as she teaches him to read. The Sage can also be a gift-giver, the hand-carved stag Davos presents to Shireen in “The Dance of Dragons” being a perfect example.

Davos’ instinct to protect the young also motivates him to risk his life by defying Stannis when he allows Gendry to escape Dragonstone in “Mhysa,” the Season 3 finale.

Stannis: “What is the life of one bastard boy against a kingdom?”

Davos: “Everything.”

Davos’ big-hearted protective streak can get him into trouble, but we have to remember where he came from. He was born among the poorest of the poor in the King’s Landing slum of Flea Bottom, and because of his impoverished beginnings, he holds no illusions about the fates of the weak and disadvantaged in Westeros.

Melisandre, Davos, and Jon

THE SAGE AS HERO’S CONSCIENCE

Despite all his wisdom, Davos was often unable to dent Stannis’ headstrong decision-making process. Davos also realized (in the end) that Stannis was not the hero he thought he was. Now he has found Jon Snow, a leader to whom he can devote himself anew. As we see in his exchange with Jon immediately after the latter’s resurrection in “Oathbreaker,” Davos senses Jon’s disorientation and moves to get him back on track.

Davos: “You were dead. And now you’re not. That’s completely fucking mad, seems to me. I can only imagine how it seems to you.”

Jon Snow: “I did what I thought was right, and I got murdered for it. And now I’m back. Why?”

Davos: “I don’t know. Maybe we’ll never know. What does it matter? You go on. You fight for as long as you can. You clean up as much of the shit as you can.”

Jon Snow: “I don’t know how to do that. I thought I did, but… I failed.”

Davos: “Good. Now go fail again.” (“Oathbreaker,” S6/Ep3)

Davos knows that Jon Snow is good, and that he can hopefully be convinced to fight for what is right. Hopefully Davos will continue to be a reassuring and motivating voice in Jon’s ear as the story reaches an ending.

CONCLUSION

Game of Thrones tends to be rough on the good guys, but Ser Davos Seaworth has proven both fortunate and durable, not to mention vital to the storyline. Melisandre may have resurrected Jon Snow, but it was Davos who saved him. And now that Jon Snow and Sansa Stark lead the stouthearted forces of the North against formidable foes, they are going to need their Sage’s measured council more than ever.
