Major casting news! Four amazing actors have been announced for House of the Dragon‘s second season. We finally have our Alys Rivers (among others)!

According to Deadline, Simon Russell Beale, Freddie Fox, Gayle Rankin and Abubakar Salim have joined the cast of House of the Dragon. And just in case you prefer to err on the side of skepticism, House of the Dragon‘s official twitter account confirmed the announcement.

Simon Russell Beale will play Ser Simon Strong, castellan of Harrenhal and great-uncle to Larys and the late, great Harwin Strong.

Cast1

Freddie Fox will play Ser Gwayne Hightower, Alicent’s brother whom we saw briefly (in full armor with a lowered helm) get knocked off his horse by Daemon in episode 1.

Cast2

Abubakar Salim will play Alyn of Hull, a sailor of … ambiguous parentage.

Cast3 copy

Last but certainly not least we have Gayle Rankin as Alys Rivers, a nursemaid and possible woods witch.

Casting4

My heart is so full.

HBO Greenlights Dunk & Egg to Series – A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Officially Headed to MAX

Dunk and Egg stories

It’s a busy week in the GTU (Game of Thrones Universe). Those Aegon the Conqueror rumors keep swirlingHouse of the Dragon finally began filming for season 2 (about time, right?) And today, during HBO Max’s wild news conference of ups and downs and name drops (more on that below), we got the craziest news of all. Dunk & Egg are officially making the jump from page to screen in the next iteration of the live-action GOT incarnations. How do you feel about all this info?!

Dunk & Egg are only 3 novellas deep, but apparently HBO (details below) thinks that’s more than enough for a series. I might remind them that each novella is no more than 70-100 pages, but who am I to tell Warner Brothers, famous makers of 3 three hour plus Hobbit-sized epics based on one itty-bitty short children’s novel that there’s not enough source material to adapt? Ha! The nerve of me.

Anyhoo, Dunk & Egg have been beloved by many readers for decades, and their escapades that take place roughly 100 years or so pre-GOT time is sure to excite the base, and titillate the Internet. Besides, if ratings count for anything, HBO (dammit!) is sure to have another massive hit on their hands, if HOTD’s runaway successes are any indication.

According to HBO‘s press release, here is the logline:

A century before the events of “Game of Thrones,” two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros…a young naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await those improbable and incomparable friends.

It will be written and executive produced by George R. R. Martin (!) and Ira Parker, with Vince Gerardis and Ryan Condal (HOTD showrunner) are executive producers. Wow. That’s a lot of news to take in…

“Hey David, why do you keep crossing out HBO,” you ask? “Because,” I say, “HBO is making the inexplicably stupid and dumbfounding decision to drop the name HBO and rebrand the streaming service simply “MAX.” You’ve heard that right. What has been the household brand name for the most prestigious and critically acclaimed TV series this side of the planet for decades (or, well, 1999 really, when The Sopranos crashed the network TV party), is officially being rebranded from “It’s not TV, it’s HBO” to “Just Max.” I personally believe this is one of the dumbest decisions they could possibly make. Thank the old gods that it’s the only questionable announcement they made at this press conference!

….I stand corrected.

Filming for House of the Dragon season 2 has begun!

emma-d-arcy-matt-smith_0

Just like that, the season 2 premiere seems a little less far away.

Call the banners! House of the Dragon‘s official Twitter account announced today that season 2 is “now in production.”

Aegon’s actor, Tom Glynn Carney, posted the same photo on Instagram with the caption, “Back at it …”

Very little is known about the who, what, where, what, why of season 2. However, a few days ago, @Westerosies tweeted a few photos of a new set in Leavesden studios in England.

@Westerosies also tweeted that English actor, Kieran Bew has “reportedly” joined the cast for season 2, a rumor based on the fact that Michelle Bonnard, who played the brothel madam in the season 1 episode “The Green Council,” recently instagrammed a photo of herself “on the job” with Bew.

Now, the instagram post does not mention House of the Dragon, of course, and it’s worth pointing that that this selfie was taken days before filming for season 2 officially began, so … we’ll just have to wait and see if anything comes of this rumor.

We’ll be sure to keep you updated as more filming news rolls in.

Aegon the Conqueror spinoff reportedly being “actively discussed” at HBO

Aegon_on_Balerion
Art by Jordi Gonzalez Escamilla

What can I say? HBO’s Game of Thrones spinoff cup runneth over.

According to Variety, a Game of Thrones prequel about Aegon, Visenya and Rhaenys Targaryen’s legendary conquest of Westeros is being “actively discussed” at HBO. Variety‘s sources claim that these plans may include a feature component, meaning that HBO and Warner Bros might produce a feature film about the OG Targaryen king that would then lead into a series.

As intriguing as this all sounds, please keep my use of “may” and “might” in mind, along with the fact that HBO has declined to comment. So, all we actually have to go on right now are Variety‘s anonymous sources.

There are also, as I alluded to earlier, quite a few Game of Thrones spinoffs in various stages of development already. At last count the list included: Ten Thousand Ships, Nine Voyages, the Dunk & Egg adaptation, and the Jon Snow sequel. Add Aegon & Co to the roster and I think it’s clear HBO is genuinely interested in further exploring the world of George R.R Martin’s creation but gods only know which story we’re actually going to get next.

That said, Variety‘s source claims the folks at HBO are particularly “keen” to get this project going. So, it well may be that the next show we get about Westeros will be about its very formation.
