Major New Game of Thrones Season 8 Spoilers out of the Winterfell set!
After following the construction of the new Winterfell set for months, recently we got our first good look at what they’re filming down at the Moneyglass estate. Now, that was quite exciting, but what we bring you here today is entirely different. It constitutes a major season eight spoiler. This isn’t a little thing. It’s true endgame stuff, right here for your viewing pleasure if you want, but we must warn you: spoilerphobes, keep away!
Now, for the rest of us, for the spoilerphiles, if you dare, read on…
I’m sure the Game of Thrones crew would have loved to keep this revelation under wraps until the show aired, but you will now understand why that was absolutely impossible. To put it bluntly: they put the set to the torch. And it wasn’t just a little bit of smoke: with some very real fire, alongside clever lighting and smoke, the entire set was lit up!
Surely, there is no way to ignore what this means: in season eight, Winterfell will fall. Many predicted this already, but now that’s an inescapable fact. And, more than that, Winterfell will burn — to the ground, if the size of that fire is anything to go by!
Now, before anyone jumps to conclusions about Mad Queens, it must be noted that this could well be Viserion’s blue flame — just like they did with wildfire in seasons two and six, normal fire could be filmed and then the color changed in post-production.
That said, we just don’t know. Maybe the flame is blue and it’s the Night King who is behind this, as one may expect. Perhaps, for some reason, Daenerys and her two remaining dragons are behind this. Or hell, who knows, perhaps Cersei has some wildfire left and somehow managed to march north and blow up the Stark’s stronghold.
Whatever the case, this is a big spoiler. At some point in season eight, the Stark home will be no more. Will it be a mid-season conflict and the survivors will retreat south? Or will it be at the end, in which case Game of Thrones will go out with a very literal bang?

Lena Headey says ‘everybody cried’ during final read-through; art director teases March production schedule
We suspected as much, but according to Lena Headey, we’ll have to get the tissues ready for Season 8 of Game of Thrones.
“We did a massive read-through in October, and I think pretty much everybody cried at one point,” Headey, who plays the smirking, wine-swilling, half-mad Cersei Lannister, said in a recent interview with Mashable. And, she added, the ending “was pretty surprising.”
Being a part of Thrones and it’s massive popularity has been “an amazing journey,” and despite it coming to an end in the near future, Headey said she’s okay with that.
“I’ve enjoyed every second of it, and … it’s changed my life in spectacular ways, so I’m ever grateful for that opportunity,” she said.
On the other side of the camera, as we reported on January 28, Thrones art director Deborah Riley took home top honors at the annual Art Directors Guild Awards in the category of One-Hour Period or Fantasy Single-Camera Series. In an interview on the award’s red carpet, Riley said that even though the end of the show is nigh, she thinks it will be “sweet,” and not just “bittersweet,” a term we’ve been hearing from many a cast and crew member.
“We’re all gonna be so proud and so thrilled and it will be time to move on,” she said. “Bringing this show to an end — I mean, what an amazing opportunity is that?”
Naturally, Riley didn’t take the bait and reveal any plot spoilers for the final season, but she did tease a few tantalizing details about the upcoming production schedule. Noting that, since Season 8 will have only six episodes, the production team is “working 24 hours a day” to “bring these massive, mammoth … things to the screen” — and that March will be a particularly busy month.
“[Director] Miguel Sapochnik has just started shooting his massive things, particularly in March,” Riley said. “We’re going to be so busy in March!”
We reported in December that Sapochnik, who has directed the iconic episodes “Hardhome,” “Battle of the Bastards” and “The Winds of Winter,” will direct two of the six episodes in Season 8, so that’s not news — but it’s exciting to know that work is soon getting underway on what are sure to be blockbuster episodes. Stay tuned, and we’ll keep you in the know!

Game of Thrones arrives in Dubrovnik, Croatia for imminent Season 8 filming!

The Croatian city of Dubrovnik has given life to King’s Landing since way back in season two, so it’s fair to say that by now the Old City’s unique look has become what we expect the capital of the Seven Kingdoms to look like. Thankfully, earlier this month we learned Game of Thrones would return to Dubrovnik one last time. And now that time has come!
As reported by The Dubrovnik Times, the Game of Thrones crew has set up camp “near the Old City of Dubrovnik” and the cast is expected to arrive for filming any day now:

The tent’s position suggests Game of Thrones will revisit familiar sites, namely Lovrijenac Fortress and the Pile Bay. Even when Dubrovnik ceased being the primary King’s Landing location in season six, the show always returned for these iconic landmarks.
As we reported last time, though filming in Croatia is expected to be brief, as it has been for a few seasons, there are rumors of main cast members being involved, including Kit Harington. If true, that’s interesting, because Harington, along with many others, were last spotted in or in the way to Iceland. We already knew both would be February shoots, but it seems the production may have scheduled them to take place back-to-back.

Peter Dinklage Calls the Ending of Game of Thrones “Heartbreaking”
We have received further confirmation that season 8 is going to rip all our hearts and eat them in front of us.
While chatting about the Superbowl Ad he’ll be appearing in this Sunday, Peter Dinklage discussed the final season of Game of Thrones and what a massive cultural event it will be.
Dinklage filmed a commercial for Doritos Blaze and Mountain Dew Ice, which quite unsubtly plays into the elemental aspect of of Game of Thrones as Dinklage and Morgan Freeman engage in a rap battle between ice (Mountain Dew) and fire (spicy Doritos). Fun tidbit: Dinklage had to memorize the words to Busta Rhymes’ “Look At Me Now” for the commercial.
“I had probably one of the fastest tracks in the history of rap, so I think I should get a lot of credit for that,” Dinklage said.
Anyway, back to Game of Thrones. Dinklage commented on the ridiculous levels of secrecy he and the rest of the cast are have been living under for years … though he doesn’t seem to mind it.
“That’s the fun part,” he said. “Everybody has to wait just like everybody else – family, friends. We live in a world of spoilers and we keep it quiet. We’re really good at this point.
As for the ending of season 8?
“It was heartbreaking and the end of an era,” Dinklage was all said.
So, it’s not entirely clear whether Dinklage was calling the actual content of the show’s conclusion “heartbreaking” or if he was just referring to the experience of nearing the end of his tenure on Game of Thrones. Either way, season 8 is going to be the “end of an era” for everyone, fans and cast members alike. We’re all going to end a stack of tissues for those final six episodes.

Gwendoline Christie and four castmates head to Iceland for Season 8 filming
The recent arrival in Iceland of two main cast members may mean their characters will be marching to the frozen lands beyond the Wall — unless, of course, they will just be where we expect them, in the lands south of the Wall, but now looking much frostier! With winter settled in Westeros, it’s a bit difficult to predict whether snowy Iceland will keep being used exclusively for the Frostfangs or if these scenes will be set in the North. Now, thanks to new cast arrivals in Iceland, we may know the answer to that question!
Following the lead of Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington, Kristofer Hivju, Joe Dempsie, Iain Glen, Gwendoline Christie and John Bradley were seen —and photographed— at the airport in Iceland earlier today, presumably enjoying a nice lunch after their flight:

The particular combination of cast members is what’s most telling about this picture. Since we last saw Tormund and Gendry at the Wall, we may well expect to see them around Eastwatch, part of which was indeed filmed in Iceland last year. Likewise, it’s not difficult to imagine why proven warriors such as Ser Jorah and Lady Brienne may be alongside them; perhaps to rescue them, or mount some defense between the Wall and Winterfell. All of that sounds quite plausible to me. But what about Sam?
Samwell Tarly may be the Slayer, but still, there are few circumstances in which it’s a good idea to send one of your few erudites to anywhere where the likes of Tormund Giantsbane, Brienne of Fucking Tarth, Gendry the Bull and Jorah the Bear are needed.
Sam’s presence is what leads me to believe that, with winter finally here and the White Walkers past the wall, we’ll see at least some scenes in the North beginning to look a lot more like Iceland and not so much like Northern Ireland. Maybe all of these scenes involving Clarke, Harington, Christie, Hivju, Dempsie, Glen and Bradley will take place south of the Wall; or most likely, some of them will take place around the Wall, while others, at least with Sam, will be set in the comparatively safer lands of the North.

We expected to hear more news of Game of Thrones filming in Iceland sometime in February, but the fun has kicked off already, with two main cast members sighted at the close of January. Yesterday reports surfaced on social media of Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington being spotted arriving together at the Reykjavík–Keflavík Airport.

With crew members arriving in Iceland as well, we can expect filming to begin any moment. It’s a cold and tough environment for shooting, and the show has to work quickly. There’s not a large amount of info about this year’s filming in the country, so we’re left to speculate as to what Jon Snow and Daenerys could be doing in such a snowy, icy locale. After all, wintry Iceland usually serves as places beyond the Wall for Game of Thrones. Could the duo be going back, as dangerous as that is? Or is it possible that with the advent of winter and the march south of the Night King, the frozen landscape we associate with beyond the Wall is coming closer to Winterfell? Just a thought. We’ll keep an eye out for more cast sightings and shooting, as location filming is always an exciting time, and Iceland is a gorgeous place!

Game of Thrones wins Art Directors Guild Award for Season 7!
As we mentioned a few days ago, season seven of Game of Thrones was nominated by the Art Directors Guild Awards. We gave the show a good chance to win — and it did!
Game of Thrones was nominated in the ‘One-Hour Period or Fantasy Single-Camera Series’ category, with the episodes “Dragonstone,” “The Queen’s Justice” and “Eastwatch” representing the show. It competed with A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Crown, Mindhunter and Stranger Things, all of them period dramas (or timeless black comedy-dramas, in the case of Lemony Snicket’s adaptation) and, we can all agree, worthy competitors. In the end, however, Deborah Riley’s art direction won the day!

At the Art Directors Guild event, Riley accepted the award for her marvelous production design, which was one of the highlights of season seven. You should really take a look at the design presentation Game of Thrones submitted to the ADG Awards. We have seen some of this concept art before, but there is never before seen artwork as well!
This is Game of Thrones‘ fifth win — though not consecutively. For seasons two and three, it won the ‘One-Hour Single Camera Series’ award, which later bifurcated into a contemporary series award and a period or fantasy series award, which the show won in seasons four and five. Then, however, season six was taken over by Westworld, which was duly celebrated at our sister site. But this year Game of Thrones returns to the top!

Exciting Night Shoots Ongoing at Winterfell for Game of Thrones Season 8!
As we reported earlier today, Game of Thrones has been busy this month shooting at the Winterfell set located in Toome, Northern Ireland. The prominence of the Stark set makes it a bit easier than other sites to get a peek at, thankfully! And this week, the activity has been stepping up at the filming location, with film crews, spotlights and security all over the area.
So, what’s going out on there? Luckily, Oakleaf Photography managed to snag some great shots of the work in progress, and a WotW reader has sent in a video providing another glimpse of tonight’s shoot! Let’s have a look and a listen, and get our speculation on!
Based on changes to the set in Moneyglass, it’s been apparent for some time that there would be some kind of siege to Winterfell in season 8. The only question for us was, would the attack be coming from the White Walkers or from a more human enemy from the South? We believe these new photos from Oakleaf clear up that question. Though it’s always possible the White Walkers attack later, those are certainly humans clad in armor outside Winterfell, in the photos below.

It’s hard to say with 100% certainty, but the style of helmets is consistent the armor of House Lannister, the people we would expect to see storming the gates of Winterfell, after Cersei made her intentions clear in the season 7 finale.
In addition to the photos, WotW reader Catháir captured this video of the filming. You can hear the voices of the performers/extras come into the video about 45 seconds in, with the men shouting in sync. Catháir speculates based on what we’re hearing, the soldiers might be using a battering ram; this is certainly possible and could explain them counting/chanting in unison.

Maisie Williams on What She Wants for the End of Arya’s Journey
Maisie Williams is busy this week, out promoting her new animated ole in Early Man. She swung by the Radio 1 Breakfast Show a couple days ago to promote the film and to play a fun game with a heart rate monitor! Maisie’s Early Man co-star Eddie Redmayne, her real-life boyfriend Ollie Jackson and her flatmate Bill Milner joined in to help out and to tease season 8 spoilers out of the actress. Not many spoilers were forthcoming but it is very fun!
Maisie also talks to Metro this week and admits to being excited about the future after Thrones, when her schedule opens up. “Yeah, there’s going to be far more time now to do all these other projects that in some ways I’ve missed out on — though I don’t think that has been a negative thing. But to have free time and choose what I want to do with my year is something I’m really looking forward to.”
As for how she’d like Arya’s story to finish off, Williams says to Metro, “I’ve always said I wanted her to find peace. The things that have been driving her through her story have been very bitter and twisted and aggressive. I would love for Arya to find her true self again and let go of this anger and revenge that’s accompanied her on this journey. I’d love for her to be happy.”
Another item of interest from the article that’s caused a bit of speculation from the fandom has to do with some dates dropped in the interview. Maisie is quoted as stating, about Game of Thrones, “We wrap in December and we air our first episode in April [2019]. That’s a four-month turnaround for these huge episodes. There’s a lot that goes into the final edit. You would not want to rush this season at all. We owe it to our audience and our fans to really do this final season to the best of our abilities.”
However, we’ve done some checking with our sources, and they’ve confirmed that the show is still set to finish up filming in the summer as previously established and that there’s no air date set yet. Williams’ interview with Metro was most likely done a long time ago, embargoed (as interviews often are) and held for publishing until now. The dates and months mentioned in the article are unfortunately not accurate.
Speaking of filming, it continues out at the Moneyglass estate near Toome in Northern Ireland! The Winterfell set has been a bustling beehive of activity since filming resumed after the Christmas break.

The next month should be very interesting as Game of Thrones is set to head to Iceland for location filming! Reportedly “some of the main cast” will be involved in Iceland filming, though few details have been available so far. We’ll keep our eyes open for more news as it comes!

Why have Baltimoreans been hoarding this rye whiskey?

In the summer of 2016, Naomi Karzai, the bar manager of Pen & Quill — a slightly upscale restaurant blocks from Baltimore’s Penn Station — heard an unwelcome rumor from a bartender friend. “I didn’t believe him,” she recounted later, “but I was nervous.”
Word was that Pikesville Supreme — a solid, unassuming, spicy yet smooth rye whiskey born in Maryland and beloved by Baltimoreans — was going out of production. So the next time the bar’s alcohol distributor stopped by, Karzai bought 20 cases. “It’s good and inexpensive,” she said of the whiskey, which retailed then at about $18 for a 750-milliliter bottle. “It does all of the things that we Baltimoreans like.”
In October 2016, Heaven Hill Distillery, which produced Pikesville Supreme, officially confirmed the news. At that point, the hoarding began in earnest. The Wine Source, a liquor store in Baltimore’s Hampden neighborhood, sold close to 700 bottles of Pikesville in the month following the announcement. (In previous months, the store had sold an average of 84 bottles of Pikesville, says manager Lauren Loeffler.) “Most of the people I know have their own little stashes,” Van Smith, an erstwhile Baltimore City Paper reporter and Pikesville Supreme devotee, told me in June. He had bought five cases of Pikesville — at $150 a case — from Canton Crossing Wine & Spirits in December 2016.

The Amazing Concept Art of Game of Thrones Season 7: Part 2, Kieran Belshaw
Earlier today we brought you Karakter‘s concept art for season seven, and now we continue with Kieran Belshaw‘s equally impressive work. His concept art shows Dragonstone in even more detail, the quest beyond the Wall, the Dragonpit and more!
As we said in the previous concept art showcase, the art designers were very careful to plan everything in Dragonstone in advance and make it so the locations, sets, and the VFX castle always were geographically coherent, in a way most earlier Game of Thrones locations honestly aren’t. To that end, the entire island was designed from the ground-up, as we can see in these pieces by Belshaw, particularly the map:
In the script for The Spoils of War, the ending is less abrupt than in the final product. As Belshaw tells it, “when Jamie plunges into the water he witnesses Lannister soldiers weighted down by their armour begging for help. Unfortunately although segments of this were filmed, it didn’t make the final edit.” That is unfortunate, because if the filmed version was half as beautiful as this concept piece I would love to have seen it:

The production design showcased in these pieces were nominated by the Art Directors Guild Awards last week and, judging by what we see here, they may well win! Let’s cross our fingers for Belshaw and the many others who made this happen.

Design studio Karakter releases must-see concept art for Game of Thrones season 7
The Concept Art of Game of Thrones Season 7 by Karakter
It’s not controversial to say the cinematography and visual effects in Game of Thrones have achieved a cinematic height matched by little else on television. And that takes a lot of work! Thankfully, the conceptual basis for much of what we see on-screen is almost as impressive as the final vision, and sometimes even more so. In previous years, we have shown you German studio Karakter‘s work for the show as it’s released after each season, and this time is no different!
Below the cut, you’ll see jaw-dropping concept art for Dragonstone, the Citadel, the battle at sea and at the loot train, Eastwatch, and more!
In their site, the Karakter team (art department artist Philipp Scherer, and VFX concept artists Robert Simon, Floris Didden and Tobias Mannewitz) explain that their work this time had expanded beyond what they were used to. They weren’t only working for the VFX team anymore but for the art department; their creations were being realized on set for the first time, such as the Citadel and the Street of Steel:
The island and castle of Dragonstone surroundings were rendered in a 3D model that combined the real life locations (using photogrammetry) with the purely CGI elements, so that the geography remained consistent throughout the episodes, no matter the angle of the shot:
This may seem like a little thing, but for obsessives like me, that kind of thing is appreciated; for example, King’s Landing wasn’t achieved this way early on, resulting in many inconsistencies; the geography of the city makes no sense whatsoever depending on the season and episode.
Karakter also helped create the three major setpieces of the season: the Sea Battle, the Field of Fire, and the Breach at Eastwatch. Some of these make them look even better than in the show, if that is even possible:

Peter Dinklage thinks ‘it’s time’ to end ‘Game of Thrones’
Peter Dinklage seems to be satisfied with ‘Game of Thrones’ coming to an end when it is.
If you were a cast member on one of the most popular shows in television history, people would think you’re crazy for saying that it should ever come to an end instead of clamoring for never-ending seasons. But Peter Dinklage, who’s stolen our smart, sarcastic, wine-loving hearts as Tyrion Lannister, knows that there’s a perfect time for all things to end, and for Game of Thrones, that time is now.
“It’s time,” he said recently at Variety’s Sundance Film Festival studio. “Storywise, not just for all our lives. It’s the perfect time to end it. Sometimes shows stay on a little too long, the jumping-the-shark thing.”
Dinklage added that he knows it’s never easy to say goodbye to a show like Thrones, which has broken records the world over and forever impacted pop culture, but especially to fan-favorite characters, of which Tyrion is without question. He called it “bittersweet” that it’s time to move on — a word we’ve word often from cast and crew alike as news of production on the final season continues.
“It’s always the sad part of our business, because you get pockets of great people for short amounts of time and then you have to move on and it’s always heartbreaking,” Dinklage said. “Especially when you’ve spent more than a couple months with people.”
Dinklage also noted that filming on the eighth and final season of Thrones is about halfway finished, but this likely doesn’t mean anything — numerous sources and interviews have pointed to filming continuing until at least June and possibly later. We reported in September 2017 that a casting notice for a mercenary character will film in May and June, and in October 2017 that Liam Cunningham (Davos Seaworth) said the cast will be filming “right up until the summer.” So although we’d dearly love to believe there’s only a handful of months left for Season 8 filming, it’s more likely that the Imp’s penchant for wordplay is showing. No matter what, we’ll keep you updated on filming and all other Season 8 news!

Maisie Williams warns of Season 8 divide; Royal Mail makes Game of Thrones stamps!
Today, the Royal Mail of the United Kingdom celebrates the launch of the new Game of Thrones-themed stamps with some of the cast. We bring you the details below the cut!
Also, while promoting her new animated film Early Man (from the creators and in the style of Wallace and Gromit), Maisie Williams spoke with Radio Times. Naturally, the interview was headlined by Williams’ revelation that she’d been chosen as a bridesmaid for her castmate and long-time friend Sophie Turner’s coming wedding, but the actress also spoke of the final season of Game of Thrones and how it may be perceived.
With the fancy trailer above, Royal Mail launches its 15 new Game of Thrones stamps. And that’s not all: some of the cast was there to celebrate the launch, namely Maisie Williams, Lena Headey, Peter Dinklage, Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington, all of whom posed for photos with oversized prints of their respective characters’ stamps:
The remaining featured characters are Sansa Stark, Jaime Lannnister and, honored despite being long dead, Ned Stark, Olenna Tyrell and Tywin Lannister, late giants of their Houses portrayed by acting giants who are very much alive to appreciate this:
Four other stamps focus on the creatures: direwolves; dragons; giants; and the Night King and White Walkers. A final stamp features, as it must, the iconic Iron Throne:

In other news, as reported by Radio Times, Williams is surprisingly blunt about the fact that, whatever happens in season eight, some people will inevitably be left disappointed:
“It’s either going to be everything that everyone dreamed of or it’s going to be disappointing,” Williams declares. “It depends what side of the fence you sit on because there’s definitely going to be that divide. It depends what people want from the final season. I love it, but you never know.”
That divide is, of course, inevitable. You have only to glance at the comment section of any article concerning the endgame here at Watchers to realize that, whatever Martin and Benioff & Weiss have in mind, at least some of the fandom will be bitterly disappointed.
There are too many diametrically opposed yet popular hopes for the ending for there to be no disappointment somewhere. Debunked pet theories are (or should be) easy to get over, but some may even feel betrayed by the ending not affirming their firmly held convictions on what Game of Thrones‘ thesis statement is supposed to be. I have seen plenty of people who believe the story can only end in nihilist death and destruction, as I have those who expect a truly happy ending. Both extremes may disregard Martin’s promise of a “bittersweet” ending, but all of us have our rationalizations. The final season may not have aired yet, but in truth this divide Williams speaks of already exists, as it has for many years. The only difference is that, as the final word on the story (at least for a long while), season eight may simply make this division erupt for good.
As for myself? I have my theories and ideas of what this story stands for, but, in the end, what I’m looking for in Game of Thrones most of all (as does Williams, I suspect) is a good story. What’s what I got all these years; so now let’s just see if they stick the landing!
