It just wouldn’t be Game of Thrones without a morally ambiguous royal playing, well, the game of thrones — and Olivia Cooke is here to reassure us that’s what we’ll see in the upcoming Thrones spinoff, House of the Dragon.

Cooke will play Alicent Hightower, second wife of Viserys I and a key player in the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons — the conflict at the center of HoTD. She recently spoke with Collider about her new film Naked Singularity, and while she kept details about the highly anticipated spinoff series to a minimum, she did say that Alicent is “very complex and I think people are gonna want to see the worst in her.”

The tantalizing bit about wanting to “see the worst” in Alicent aside, Cooke elaborated on how richly layered the characters are in the world of Westeros:

“What’s amazing about Game of Thrones, like we saw in the past series, is that one season, you hate a character, and the next, you absolutely love them and will go to the ends of the earth for them. You just don’t know what you’re gonna get with these characters. They’re so well-written. Such is the human condition, you can do some horrendous things, but then you can also do some wonderful things as well. It’s very complex, and it’s not black and white at all.”

Cooke also spoke about the relationship to the original Game of Thrones and an audience’s expectations, noting that “it does help that the story is of a hundred years prior. We’re in the world of Game of Thrones, but you can also put yourself in a different headspace as well and know that, for an actor, you don’t have to necessarily follow on from what anyone else is doing.”

Personally, I’ve been excited about Cooke’s casting since day one (especially after seeing her performance in Sound of Metal) and this interview does nothing to dampen my enthusiasm. Keep following Watchers as we bring you all the news and happenings about HoTD!

‘House of the Dragon’ pauses UK filming due to positive COVID-19 case

Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) and Otto Hightower (Paddy Considine) look appropriately concerned.

It’s certainly not ideal, but as the world is still in the grip of a pandemic, it’s not entirely surprising that there has been a report of a positive COVID-19 case on the UK set of the Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon.

First reported by Deadline and confirmed by Variety, a production member on the series tested positive for COVID-19 and is in isolation. The case was discovered as part of industry guidelines that mandate frequent testing, among other rules. Production will reportedly resume on Wednesday after a two-day pause.

There is no word yet if this will affect the timetable for the upcoming shooting in Spain and Portugal. Follow Watchers for any and all updates that we receive!

HBO Max Continues Game of Thrones Streak with Two More Animated Shows on the Way

In a pre-pandemic world, eons and eons ago, it was announced that a Game of Thrones animated show was in development. We never heard about this again, as the surely curated info HBO has permitted to eke out has thus far pertained to the upcoming House of the Dragon, as well as occasional news regarding the other in-development live-action shows. But now, for the first time in what seems like an eternity, there’s been an announcement on the animated front. And you know what they say: When it rains, ~~it pours~~ two more GOT animated projects are now in the works, for a total of three.
While the total of alleged upcoming animated shows is currently three, there is only a sliver of information available on exactly one of them, and it concerns a land of which we’ve heard barely a passing glance in Game of Thrones: Yi Ti. The Golden Empire of Yi Ti is a barely spoken of land across the Narrow Sea, considered one of the oldest and most developed societies in the world of Planetos. Inspired by Imperial China, similarly to how Westeros is largely inspired by Medieval Europe, Yi Ti has its own customs and rules, the likes of which I must confess to not recalling!

I’ve often said I like when things are different, and I’m glad that for a change, it sounds like HBO is shaking things up, and exploring not just the history of a location or a family (as they will with the Targaryens and eventually Westeros in House of the Dragon), but is exploring an entirely new location set in the same shared universe, the GOTCU if you will. As a book-familiar, albeit non book-purist myself, I think this provides ample opportunity for the writers to develop their own stories set in this world (presumably with George R. R. Martin’s permission of course). To that end the possibilities are limitless, and with animation at the helm, I suspect the budget wouldn’t be much of a constraint either. Time will tell.
