House of the Dragon premieres in Los Angeles
The House of the Dragon premiere took place at the Academy Museum in Los Angeles last night and, going by social media, the excitement there was palpable.
Attendees included showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik as well as cast members Paddy Considine, Steve Toussaint, Emma D’Arcy, Eve Best, Milly Alcock, Olivia Cooke, Fabien Frankel, Matt Smith, Rhys Ifans, Emily Carey and Gavin Spokes.

The Night’s Cast Episode 34: Another HoTD trailer arrives!
My word, are the wheels starting to turn on House of the Dragon, the highly-anticipated Game of Thrones spinoff that premieres on HBO in just under a month (Aug. 21, if you somehow didn’t already know).
Last week, we were gifted with a new official trailer that clocks in at nearly three full minutes, a thorough breakdown of which by our own talented Petra you can find here. Extended SDCC House of the Dragon trailer breakdown
By now you’ve surely watched the extended House of the Dragon trailer and marveled at the extra 2.6 seconds of footage it provides. Admittedly, the additions are quite minor (it’s an extended trailer, after all, not a new one) but not so minor that a seasoned nerd like myself can’t glean interesting tidbits from it.
The first extra shot we get is, in fact, the very first shot of the trailer. The editor clearly knew we’d be biting at the bit for new footage and decided not to make us wait for it. Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, Harrold Westerling, opens the door to the throne room for young Rhaenyra and, in the next shot (which was in the original trailer), we see that Daemon is waiting for her on the Iron Throne.
The meeting is obviously supposed to be a secret since Daemon is sitting there on the Iron Throne, so Harrold Westerling’s presence is surprising. Apparently Daemon has the White Cloaks as well as the Gold Cloaks under his thumb. This might make the moment later on when Westerling pushes Daemon back with his sword all the more significant as it demonstrates to Daemon how the power dynamics have changed in his absence.
Also, Rhaenyra’s wearing the same dress she has on when Daemon snatches the necklace out of her hands. So, for one reason or another, they’re going to discuss the necklace in this scene. Perhaps this is when he gifts it to her.
We get a closer shot of those two riders in the forest and can now confirm it’s definitely young Rhaenyra on the white horse. The woman’s face doesn’t look much like Milly Alcock’s, but I suspect that’s because we’re looking at her stunt double. The important thing is that her dress is the same one we see Rhaenyra wearing when she asks Criston Cole (the rider behind her) if the realm will ever accept her as queen and Cole draws a sword from his discarded armor. Looks like these two spend a significant day together.
Young Rhaenyra approaches her father, Viserys, as he stares at Balerion’s skull. He then tells her, “the Iron Throne is the most dangerous seat in the realm, and our line is vulnerable. Too easily ended.” I’m interested to find out whether this scene takes place before or after Viserys names Rhaenyra his successor.
We get three new shots of young Alicent and Rhaenyra praying together. They’re probably kneeling before the Maiden, but it would be fun if it’s the Stranger and Alicent and Rhaenyra bond over being goth girls.
Also, of the two necklaces Rhaenyra is wearing in this shot, I’m pretty sure one is the one she’s wearing at the tourney and during her conversation with Rhaenys. I’m about 98.5% sure Daemon gifts it to her.
Lord Corlys Velaryon kneels in the throne room, preparing to swear his loyalty to Rhaenyra, as we hear Corlys on voice over say, “the lords of the realm bent the knee.” Going by the editing, this is to reassure his wife, Rhaenys, after she tells him that “Rhaenyra’s succession will be challenged.”
Oh, Corlys, you sweet summer child.
We get a shot revealing who, in the original trailer, was standing in that cave staring at fire: it’s Craghas Drahar! Apparently, people are confident that’s who the man in the mask is. I’m not sure why but I’m rolling with it.
“Targaryens are closer to gods than to men,” Rhaenyra tells Daemon. Okay, so maybe I can see why certain non-Targaryen characters who are set up to be her friends early on don’t stay that way.
Viserys (note the ring on his hand, if you’re unsure) places the Catspaw dagger in a flame to show Rhaenyra the distinctive rippled pattern of the Valyrian steel.
Note that Rhaenyra’s wearing the same dress she has on during her conversation with Rhaenys. So, it’s likely the poor teenager goes straight from a conversation about the glories of Old Valyria to being told she’ll never inherit the Iron Throne because the world sucks too much. Or vice versa.

I think lots of people are expecting her to be the villain of the show already, but I think bringing her in younger, there was a lot more to explore … I’ve never had the freedom to be able to create a whole human being like this before. It was so much fun being able to go so in depth with her.

I’ve been, you know, trying to stay away from Covid and also, you may not know, but there’s this book that I’m writing. It’s a little late.” Pause for audience laughter and applause. “I don’t see [myself] visiting the set or doing anything until I finish and deliver that book and then if the show’s still going, who knows, maybe I’ll show up. I did do a cameo in the original pilot of Game of Thrones but they reshot most of that pilot so I was left on the cutting room floor and I was supposed to be, at a certain point, I was supposed to be a severed head in that scene where Joffrey makes Sansa look at all the severed heads on the wall. I was going to be one of them but then they found out how expensive it was to make a severed head and they just bought a box of used severed heads, one of whom was George W. Bush, which got us in a lot of trouble when people noticed that and I don’t think he’s there any longer but if you get one of the old DVDs you can see that. Now, who knows maybe I can yet become a severed head at some point.”
46:47 A fan asks Martin what aspect of the plot was hardest to adapt into House of the Dragon. Martin hands the question over to Condal who says “It’s a really interesting challenge because [Fire and Blood] is not a traditional novel. It’s not written in prose, it’s a history book, as George calls it, a fake history … so the trick is, I think, painting in the lines, [where] you have point A and point C but you don’t really know what point B was, and that’s the fun of the invention of the show. To me the most challenging thing is just the sheer amount of time that the story covers because it’s the story of a generational war, so it was figuring out how to structure it in such a way that we could move people through this very complex timeline in a very simple way so that people didn’t get lost, and I think we’ve done a pretty good job, but that was certainly a brain bender for the writers and I, and thank you Sara Hess, who’s somewhere in the audience for saving our bacon on that.
48:29 Martin then adds, “the challenge with anything as big as Fire and Blood or A Game of Thrones and its sequels before that [is that] there’s always this tendency to simplify. ‘Oh, there are too many characters!’ … the audience is more sophisticated than sometimes people making television assume, and that’s one of the great things about working for HBO is [that] they’re willing to tackle things that are a little more challenging than you would get at the over the air networks, or some other things.

House of the Dragon at SDCC: Q&A panel and immersive fan experience
For the first time since 2019, San Diego Comic Con has come alive with the music of dragons. After being cancelled two years in a row due to Covid, SDCC is back from July 21 – July 24 in a joyous return to some semblance of normality.
House of the Dragon has enjoyed a strong presence at the convention so far, with a Q&A panel held on Saturday and a new interactive exhibit called House of the Dragon: The Dragon’s Den in which fans can, among other things, hatch their own dragon eggs.
The panel was held in Hall H, attended by creator Ryan Condal (co-creator Miguel Sapochnik had to cancel due to catching Covid, but sent a message expressing his excitement for the show), George R.R. Martin and cast members Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Graham McTavish, Milly Alcock and Emily Carey.

George R.R. Martin spoke about the tumultuous emotions of handing over “his children” for adaptation.
“I was nervous at the beginning because, you know, these books, these characters are like my kids and when you give your kid to people for adoption you wonder how they will be treated. Will you recognize them when they come back to you and all that but I‘ve been very, very fortunate, here, and I think Ryan has done a great job of adapting the books – so far,” he added, to knowing laughter from Ryan Condal and the audience. “And our cast here is amazing. I haven’t had a chance to meet them. Unfortunately, with Covid I didn’t get to visit the set and hang around as I did on a certain other show in the past. I’ve seen nine of the ten episodes and it’s pretty amazing. Pretty amazing. I’m really very happy.”

In addition to the panel, SDCC attendees can participate in House of the Dragon: The Dragon’s Den, an immersive experience in which fans can walk through King’s Landing, sit the Iron Throne, select their own dragon egg and take part in a dragon hatching ceremony.
