There’s no denying that Game of Thrones has been a major influence on pop culture during its run — you wouldn’t expect anything less from the world’s most popular television show — and references have found their way into a variety of other shows, from Parks and Recreation to Family Guy, Louis, The Big Bang Theory and Doctor Who. For its 29th season premiere tonight, The Simpsons, the longest-running animated show in TV history, is getting in on the fun and even bringing Jaime Lannister along for the ride.
Although the show had a Thrones-themed opening way back in 2012 (complete with three-eyed ravens flying past the smokestacks of Springfield’s nuclear power plant) and there have been a sprinkling of other references since then, tonight’s episode, titled “The Serfsons,” is mostly Game of Thrones-influenced — even Bart’s trademark prank calls are sent via raven:
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau will voice a character listed in the episode description as “Marge-like Man,” so we can’t wait to see what that means. The episode description also says that Marge’s mother is turned into an “ice-walker,” so expect references to the Night King or the army of the dead as well. From the clip available, the episode seems to have additional fantasy influences — Milhouse appears as an orc or goblin-like creature, so perhaps Lord of the Rings found its way in there too — but the guiding theme seems to be Thrones.
The Simpsons airs at 8 p.m. tonight on Fox, should you be so inclined to watch anything Thrones-related as we wait for Season 8 to grace our screens.
