George R.R. Martin reacts to Westworld GoT cameo backlash: “It was just a bit of fun”
As we reported on this past Monday, the above-pictured key Game of Thrones players—showrunners Benioff and Weiss, and starring dragon Drogon— made an amusing little cameo in Westworld’s latest episode. Then this corner of the internet kind of exploded with reactions ranging from the intended laughter to befuddlement or even anger.
Thankfully, A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin is here to bring some much-needed perspective to this whole thing…
In his definitely-a-blog ‘Not A Blog‘ blog, Martin praises Westworld as a “terrific show”, though he had yet another reason to watch when his “friend Jonah Nolan”, the co-showrunner, told him to be sure to watch last week’s episode.
“I was indeed amused when we came on the cameo of The Three Ds: David Benioff, Dan Weiss, and Drogon. I thought it was a fun moment, and it made me smile.”
“Subsequently, of course, the internet has blown up over the cameo, as the internet is wont to do. Some people loved the cameo, some hated it, and everybody, it seems to me, is making way too much of it. Hey, folks, c’mon. It was just a bit of fun. A sort of Easter Egg. You all like Easter Eggs in your video games, don’t you? If you blinked, you could have missed it… kind of like the appearance of Yul Brynner’s “man in black” robot from the original WESTWORLD movie that appeared first season. I have been known to do that sort of thing myself. Sharp-eyed readers of A SONG OF ICE & FIRE long ago noticed the appearance of the Three Stooges in the first novel, and my subsequent mentions of how giants devoured Triarch Belicho and a knight wearing Dallas Cowboys heraldry. And if you missed those… as 98% of the readers did… that’s fine, they were just a tip o’ the hat. I also have houses named after the great fantasists Jack Vance, Roger Zelazny, and Robert Jordan, for what it’s worth. More tips o’ my hat. (I wear a lot of hats).”
Martin then lists the cameos he has done himself over the years, such as Z Nation, Sharknado 3, and his much-discussed Game of Thrones pilot cameo, during the wedding of Daenerys and Drogo, which was cut once much of the episode was re-shot.
“Had I been in Los Angeles at the time of the filming, I might well have been part of that WESTWORLD cameo as well. Jonah and Lisa have also stated that the whole thing was my idea. Which is true. Kinda sorta. No, I had no idea this particular moment was coming until I caught it on HBO… but back during WESTWORLD’s season one, I did suggest to Jonah that, seeing as how the original WESTWORLD film featured a Medieval World, the TV version could easily have a Westeros World.”
“Jonah Nolan and Lisa Joy mentioned that I worked in television back in the 80s, when crossovers between shows were more common,” he adds, going on to mention examples such as Simon & Simon with Magnum P.I., and their attempt with Twilight Zone.
“As for the WESTWORLD cameo,” Martin finishes, “Robbie the Robot had a long career in film and television after FORBIDDEN PLANET. Why would we want to begrudge Drogon the same?”
Who indeed.

Westworld creator explains Benioff, Weiss and [redacted]’s cameo in episode 2
Those of us who are fans of both Game of Thrones and Westworld got an extra-meta treat in Westworld’s latest episode last night. Though it was no secret that Game of Thrones‘ showrunners, David Benioff and D.B Weiss would appear briefly in season 3 of Westworld, their cameo turned out to have a lot more bite than fans were expecting *laughs punnily*
**Mild spoilers for episode 2 of season 3 of Westworld**
In episode 2, “The Winter Line”, Bernard and Stubb walk through a Delos facility for “park four,” which is an as of yet unnamed park that was apparently populated by hosts in medieval garb before it shut down. Fans have speculated that this might have been “Fantasy World,” but this remains unconfirmed.
Bernard and Stubbs then walk passed two Delos techs played by none other than David Benioff and D.B Weiss.
Their dialogue goes thusly:
“Got a buyer,” Weiss’ character says.
“What?” Benioff
“Some start up in Costa Rica,” Weiss says.
“How the f*** are you gonna get that to Costa Rica?” Benioff asks.
“In pieces, man,” Weiss says.
We then cut to a wide shot and see that they’re talking about Daenerys’ last living baby, Drogon, whom Weiss approaches with a chainsaw.
Westworld co-creator, Jonathan Nolan explained the thought process behind the cameos to Insider.
“We are both fans of and friends with Dan and David,” he said. “We had this goofy idea that we would pay homage to their staggeringly beautiful and ambitious show — the show that paved the way for us to be making Westworld with the same kind of ambition and production value. They kind of invented this genre of TV. And they’re lovely guys.”
“So we pitched them this goofy idea, and they were kind enough to come and hang out on our set for one night and bring their oversized, fire-breathing friend with them.”
In addition to the obvious nod to Game of Thrones, the scene might have also been intended as a reference to Jurassic Park.
See, HBO’s Westworld is a loose remake of the 1973 film of the same name which was written and directed by Michael Crichton, who went to write the novel, Jurassic Park … another story about the attractions of a theme park gaining the upper hand. Since the titular dinosaur park was located on a fictional island off the coast of Costa Rica, it’s pretty likely that’s that what the aforementioned “start up in Costa Rica is” (or, at least, is referencing).
“There were always two competing pitches, right? [First] George R.R. Martin — who we also know, and is a lovely person — frequently pitched the crossover of a ‘Westeros World’ episode,” Nolan said. “And then Athena Wickham, our partner and one of the executive producers on the show, insisted that we find a reference to Crichton’s other great ‘theme park run amok’ [story], ‘Jurassic Park.'”
Choosing to show us a dragon rather than a dinosaur was also a clever way to sidestep some tricky copyright laws.
“I was of the theory that the lovely people at NBC Universal probably had a lawyer sitting and watching every episode, waiting for the dinosaur, so they could make a friendly phone call to tell us to cease and desist,” Nolan said. “So we found a way to blend those two pitches into one ridiculous moment in our series.”

We may be dreaming of spring, but today, it’s a time for wolves. We’re thrilled to announce to fans everywhere that the Tennessee-based Wildefell Wolves are returning for a second year to Con of Thrones.
Con of Thrones, the premier convention for fans of Game of Thrones, A Song of Ice and Fire, and the epic worlds of fantasy author George R. R. Martin, will take place July 17-19, 2020, at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL. Wildefell Wolves will bring four of their highly trained wolfdog ambassadors to the con and, joining for the first time, their trained crow, Pan. The animals will participate in photograph experiences with attendees throughout the weekend. Photograph experiences are on sale now.
Autograph and photograph experiences are also available with Game of Thrones actors Iain Glen (Ser Jorah Mormont), Anton Lesser (Qyburn), Miltos Yerolemou (Syrio Forel), and Sam Coleman (Young Hodor), not to mention Water Dancing Workshops!
Con of Thrones will host in-depth discussions about both the television and book series, Special Guest Spotlight interviews, live recordings of fan-favorite podcasts, and much more. Martin is, apparently, riding out the coronavirus in Westeros…interesting!
I suppose you can find a silver lining in everything, and in the case of COVID-19 shutting down large swaths of the world, it’s that A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin is apparently spending a lot of time in Westeros — good news for those of us waiting for The Winds of Winter, perhaps?
Martin posted an update of sorts on his NotABlog on March 17, letting readers know that he’s shuttered his Meow Wolf arts and entertainment company, the Jean Cocteau Cinema, and his non-profit Stagecoach Foundation. The venues, all based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, will remain closed until April 15 as a precautionary measure.
Martin also assured readers that — despite being in the “high-risk” category for the virus, given his age — he feels fine and is taking “all sensible precautions,” including self-quarantine. So how is he spending his time? The answer is heartening (in a way) for ASOIAF readers:
“I am off by myself in a remote isolated location, attended by one of my staff, and I’m not going in to town or seeing anyone. Truth be told, I am spending more time in Westeros than in the real world, writing every day. Things are pretty grim in the Seven Kingdoms… but maybe not as grim as they may become here.”
Spending more time in Westeros than the real world, you say? WRITING EVERY DAY, YOU SAY? We’ve all been fooled before when Martin makes any indication that TWOW is being worked on, but in these uncertain times, we’ll take what we can get to lift our spirits.
Meanwhile, we found out that truly no one is safe from COVID-19, including our boisterous freefolk fav, Tormund Giantsbane. Actor Kristofer Hivju posted on Instagram on March 17 that he has, unfortunately, tested positive for the virus:
It doesn’t sound as though it’s affecting him terribly, and he only has “mild symptoms of a cold,” so here’s hoping for a speedy recovery for Hivju and his family!
