Kit Harington, David Benioff, D.B Weiss and “Battle of the Bastards” director discuss Bastard Bowl: “The biggest thing we’ve ever filmed”

BOB

Showrunners D.B Weiss and David Benioff, “Battle of the Bastards” director, Miguel Sapochnik, and Kit Harington build hype for the titular fight for Winterfell taking place next episode.

Episode director, Miguel Sapochnik, and David Benioff and D.B Weiss spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the much-anticipated confrontation between Ramsay Bolton and Jon Snow.

Sapochnik discussed the uniqueness of each battle in Game of Thrones and said that the Battle of the Bastards (referred to during production as BOB) takes place on a greater scale than anything the show has done yet. Indeed, the battle was a huge undertaking that took 25 days to film and required 500 extras, 600 crew members and 70 horses.

“David and Dan wanted to do a thing of spectacle, a strategic pitchfield battle they hadn’t had the resources to do back in season 1 or 2,” Sapochnik said. “I was particularly interested in depicting both the horror of war and the role of luck in battle.”

David Benioff said that it was Sapochnik’s brilliant work on “Hardhome” that inspired them to bring him back for another huge battle “this time with horses.” He praised Sapochnik’s direction of BOB, adding that, “Some of the shots he’s pulled off are some of the best on the show.”

D.B Weiss concurred: “Miguel’s really outdone himself. Fully fleshed out medieval battles require a tremendous amount of resources and choreography to get them right. It feels like we’re doing something fresh that you don’t see on TV and movies very often.”

Kit Harington appeared on The Morning and chatted about the struggle to keep Jon’s resurrection a secret, the story behind the Starks’ northern accents and, of course, Bastard Bowl (which he clarified was not a spoiler). “It’s pretty huge,” he said. “It’s the biggest thing we’ve ever filmed for Thrones. And each year I say that ’cause each year Thrones has to get bigger.”
