Game of Thrones Season 8 Still on Hold Over Number of Episodes

Game of Thrones Season 8 has not yet been formally confirmed–and now we know why. At the Television Critics Association panels this weekend, HBO programming president Casey Bloys explained that the hold up is over the details: specifically the number of episodes.

According to TVLine:

{S}howrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are still deciding how many episodes the farewell season will consist of, which suggests the duo may be rethinking their previously announced six-episode game plan.

This is huge news. As we previously noted, some actors, like Iain Glen, have referenced “15 more hours” to go for the show, even though the showrunner duo has suggested the number of one hour episodes left is 13: 7 for Season 7 and 6 for Season 8. Perhaps this might explain the discrepancy?

“The only thing we’re working out is how many episodes they want to do,” says Bloys when asked what’s holding up the official Season 8 green light. The exec added that he “hopes” Benioff and Weiss will deliver more than six episodes. “They’re still figuring it out because I think they’re trying to get a shape of the season,” he continues. “They always do what they think [will yield] the best version of the show. It’s all about how many they’re comfortable [with]. But I’ll always take more.”

Of course, HBO would be salivating, and perhaps even quietly pushing for more than six episodes. originally Benioff and Weiss had said they would only do seven seasons, and were pushed into splitting that final one when it became obvious they needed more than ten episodes to finish. We’ll have to see what the outcome is, but it sounds like once the number of episodes is ironed out–and we find out if there are 6, 7 or 8 more hours to go in 2018, HBO will formally announce the renewal, and not wait until Season 7 begins to air, as was their their habit previously.
