Winter is Coming: Snow Artist pays tribute to Game of Thrones

With the Game of Thrones Season 6 premiere rapidly approaching, diehard fans are showing their appreciation in imaginative ways. The Daily Mail reports that British snow artist Simon Beck walked through the deep snows of the Alps (taking 64,800 steps, to be precise) for 13 hours to draw a giant direwolf, the sigil of House Stark, in the mountainside, complete with the tagline “Winter is Coming.” Watch above.

When describing his daunting task, Beck had this to say:

The first thing you’ve got to work out is which way round you are going to turn the drawing and where to start it to make sure you don’t run off the edge of it. ‘The second stage is measuring a skeleton of accurately plotted lines that go through the drawing, and once you have got enough points measured out you can then do a join up the dots process.

And then he howled. Pretty impressive, Mr. Beck.

Speaking of fan tributes, a gentleman named Mikhail Selgis has uploaded some rather excellent photos of two models standing in in as Jon Snow and Ygritte. The models are Olga Bondarenko, who’s playing Ygritte, and Selgis himself as Jon Snow. Take a look:

JON YG 1

These two almost look like Kit Harington and Rose Leslie, the actors who portray these characters on the show. I love the vulnerability in this photo. One’s a man of the Night’s Watch sworn to defend the Wall against the wildlings, and one’s a wildling…it’s actually quite beautiful.

JON YG 2

This one’s for the romantics out there. I thought I’d add it just in case you needed a good look into what Jon and Ygritte were doing on those long cold nights before they reached the Wall.

Jon yg 3

I’m sure this is supposed to symbolize Ygritte’s death.

You can see the full album, which includes dozens of pictures, by visiting Selgis’ Facebook page. Photographers include Andrey Erastov, Maria Polynichko, and Alexey Alenchev. I always like it when fans take the things they love from Game of Throne and make them their own. To me, it’s not fanfiction or stealing the creator’s ideas—it’s actually the highest form of flattery.

Game of Thrones Season 6 premieres on April 24th, and it just can’t get here fast enough.
