The official Game of Thrones YouTube channel posted a new behind-the-scenes video focusing on the prosthetics. Lots of behind-the-scenes footage of White Walkers, wights, and others in makeup chairs. But they sneak in some footage of the Hardhome battle as well.
Speaking of battles, James Hibberd of Entertainment Weekly has posted some new quotes from Thrones writers on how season 6 will have their biggest battle yet.
“We wondered, ‘Why don’t you see more fully fleshed-out battles in movies and TV?’” said Dan Weiss, is a showrunner on the series along with David Benioff. “Then you get into the nitty-gritty of what it takes to actually shoot these things in a way that isn’t just helter-skelter chaos but actually gives you a sense of battle geography and the ebb and flow, and you realize why.”
The sequence is in an episode directed by Miguel Sapochnik, who won widespread praise last season for staging “Hardhome.” Shooting the battle took about a month of principal photography. “Miguel did such a fantastic job with ‘Hardhome’ we thought we should bring him back – this time with horses,” Benioff said. “Horses are not easy, at all. And certainly in terms of numbers – number of extras, number of stuntmen, number of shooting days – it’s the biggest we’ve done.”
WinterPhil: Interesting stuff. Looks like a lot of the footage from the vid may actually be from season 5. Certainly all of the Hardhome stuff at the end is from last season. But what about the Night’s King wielding an ice sword at the 1:20 mark? That didn’t appear to be from Hardhome as I don’t think he had a weapon in any of those shots. It looks like it could be the White Walkers and their zombie horde advancing towards some unknown foes in preparation for a battle. Notice Hibberd writes that the “big battle” will contain a host of humans on one side but goes out of his way to avoid calling the other side human. Hmm…
