Liam Cunningham shares his thoughts on Shireen’s death and Game of Thrones fan theories

Liam Cunningham chats about Davos’ role in Game of Thrones season 6 and the social relevance of Shireen’s sacrifice, and shares his thoughts on some ridiculous-maybe-not-so-ridiculous fan theories.

Cunningham spoke with IGN about season 6, particularly Davos’ “mic drop” line from the trailer, “I’ve never been much of a fighter. Apologies for what you’re about to see.” He hinted at its context.

“[Davos is] gonna be in the thick of it. You have to remember the enemies of Jon Snow did this, and he is there. Davos has nowhere else to go. Dragonstone is dead, Stannis is dead. Shireen’s gone. Jon Snow is gone. But he is where he is purely by matter of location … You have to place that particular moment in terms of timeframe when you last saw the end of Season 5.”

In an interview with Vulture, Cunningham discussed Melisandre’s character, denied any knowledge of Jon Snow’s future and shared his thoughts on Shireen’s sacrifice.

But it was really necessary for the story. Dan said it’s about religious fundamentalism, extremism, and what it can drive a human being to do. In this case, it was an intelligent man, Stannis, agreeing to do that to his own daughter, and finding an excuse to do it. And you saw his reasons for doing it, which is what makes it very, very dangerous. It has a resonance in a way, in the real world, when you look at ISIS, you know? It’s always wrong. The justification of it. The repercussions of doing something like that are never going to be good.

On a lighter note, Rolling Stone had Cunningham react to some fan theories ranging from “Jon Snow is Azor Ahai” to “Dragonglass is dragon feces.” He added his own personal theory that the final shot of Game of Thrones will be of the Night King chillin’ on the Iron Throne smoking a Cohiba. Make it so, David & Dan.
