Costume czar Michelle Clapton on Daenerys’ evolving look and Game of Thrones Season 7

Longtime Game of Thrones costume designer Michelle Clapton has a big presence at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. She oversaw the Hall of Faces installation located at 628 L Street, across from the Omni Hotel. Fans can have their picture taken and then have their face rendered on columns next to the dead of Westeros and Essos, check out costumes from the show, pose with Needle, Arya’s sword, and even sit the Iron Throne. Game of Thrones-themed accessories from Clapton’s new line, all of them based on Daenerys Targaryen, are also on display.

Hypable caught up with Clapton and chatted with her about a number of topics, including all that Daenerys-inspired bling. “[I] had this idea that it would be great to do a collection based around her stuff, because I think she really appeals to young, modern, contemporary women,” Clapton said. “There’s that feistiness and that strength, and I think it works well.”

[Daenerys] is one of the characters that actually appeals to both men and women, and I think that’s quite interesting.

Clapton also had some thing to say about how Daenerys’ look has changed over the course of the show. Remember the white gown she wore during the scene in Daznak’s Pit in Season 5, when Drogon swooped in and torched the Sons of the Harpy? She wore that “to show this purity and removal from the fighting pits, which she hated.”

In fact, Daenerys wore white throughout Season 5, which reflected her above-it-all attitude toward ruling Meereen. Things were different by the end of Season 6. Daenerys swapped her white duds for darker colors, a change that was intentional, according to Clapton.

It’s not quite black. It’s just sort of going that [Targaryen] direction a little bit. I just want this sort of strength… and I wanted the embroidery on her to become more metalic and stronger.

It seems like the costume change means that Daenerys is embracing her inner Targaryen, and getting comfortable with the idea of being a conqueror. That could be bad news for Cersei and her allies back in Westeros, but we’ll have to wait until Season 7 to see how that shakes down. “It’ll be interesting to see the direction she goes in next season,” Clapton said. Indeed it will.

Happily, Clapton says she’ll be involved with designing the costumes for the upcoming year. “I’ve just started prepping on 7,” she says. “We always do it the same, we read the storylines and we design accordingly, so everything should make sense to where they’re going. And sometimes it foretells things.” This is terrific news, since after Season 5 it looked like Clapton was leaving the show. Apparently, she just took off most of Season 6. (She came back to design costumes for “The Winds of Winter,” including Cersei’s striking coronation gown,” costumes that earned the show an Emmy nomination.)

Clapton doesn’t give away too much about what’s coming in Season 7, but can’t help but talk about one of her ideas.

I quite like jewelry that isn’t just too traditional. I like to take it further. I was looking at this wonderful cage that can sit on shoulders, and I was thinking I’ve got to do — I’ve got someone in mind, but I’m not sure if I’m going to do it or not… I’m going to see if I can work out a way to do this for this one character, but I can’t say!

So one character might wear a “wonderful cage that can sit on shoulders.” That already sounds awesome. It’s great to know that Clapton is sticking around.
