Benioff and Weiss Reveal Their Key Scene From Battle of the Bastards

With the build up to the Emmys next month underway, entertainment columns are going through the mountains of categories step by step and interviewing the nominees to discuss the various and sundry nominations they’ve received this year. One such column is the The Los Angeles Times‘ The Envelope, dedicated to all of the different Hollywood industry awards. Yesterday, they focused on the writing nominations, both for scripts in the Comedy and the Drama category, the latter of which is one of the many, many categories that Game of Thrones is nominated in for this past season.

In focusing on the writers, they asked each of the nominees to tell them what they considered to be the key scene of the episode, and why. For Game of Thrones, that meant that writers David Benioff and Dan Weiss, who are nominated for Season 6 episode 9, “Battle of the Bastards” to pull out one moment they considered to be the most important. One would think that the answer to that question might be the opening scene, where, after weeks of faking us out that the entire hour would be set in Witnerfell, the show opened in Meereen, where Day conquers the Masters. One might think it would be the titular battle between Jon Snow and Ramsay Bolton for control of Winterfell. Certainly the filming of that battle was one that will stand as one of the most stunning things created for a TV audience.

But no. Instead they chose the very ending scene of the episode, where Sansa gets her revenge on Ramsay for all that he put her through in Season 5.

The show runners jointly say in an email: “Sansa has suffered greatly at this man’s hands, and watched others lose their lives trying to protect her from him. She has spent a good deal of time plotting her revenge, and Ramsay inadvertently provides her with the perfect method for his own execution. … She watches as Ramsay becomes a victim of his own brutality, and his ravenous dogs satisfy their hunger — and Sansa’s.”

Interesting. Sadly, HBO has made the clip of the final scene from episode 9 unembeddable, but here is what the writers had to say about it in the “Inside the Episode” segment.

As always, good luck to all the nominees.
