Before Game of Thrones comes to an end in 2019, there is still about half a year of filming to be done for its final season, even though production started back in October of 2017. Indeed, the last season may just be composed of six episodes, and yet, whether it’s measured in their scale or their runtime or a little bit of both, they promise to be big.
How big? So big that King’s Landing has never been depicted by so many locations at once: they’re not only likely returning to Spain to recreate the dragonpit and building a big chunk of King’s Landing from scratch on a Belfast parking lot, but also going back to the city which defined the very particular look of the capital: Dubrovnik, Croatia.
The Dubrovnik Times reports that the HBO series will shoot part of its final season in their city. Filming may take place on February, which roughly coincides with the few days scheduled for Iceland. We don’t know much time was allocated for Croatia.
Reportedly, the showrunners were spotted with their scouting crew in Dubrovnik back in November, looking for new locations. This last time in Croatia will see the involvement of much of the main cast — Kit Harington is rumored to be among them, which would place Jon Snow back in the capital at some point in the eighth season.
These are exciting news, and a last hurrah in Dubrovnik seems entirely appropriate. Though Malta came first, Dubrovnik depicted King’s Landing from season two onward. Other cities have helped to give life to the capital, but Dubrovnik and King’s Landing have become so intertwined that the production always returns there, even if it’s only for a few shots of its more recognizable locations, such as the city walls. However, considering many cast members are expected to be involved this time, I’d say it’s fair to assume Dubrovnik will be involved in more than “a few shots” for the final season!
