Game of Thrones wins AFI Award, gets on Best-Of Lists, trends high on Google for 2015

Game of Thrones has already edged itself onto various Best-Of Lists for 2015, but with the end of the year rapidly approaching, there’s plenty of time to rack up s’more. Here are some of the latest:

  • Game of Thrones topped E! Online’s list of the 10 best shows of 2015, with critic Kristin Dos Santos likening it to “a freefall from a cliff with the most incredible landing,” and describing Jon Snow’s murder as “a TV moment we’ll never forget.”
  • The writeup on E! was the one of the few not to make mention on the criticisms the show received during its fifth season. Complex, which ranked the show 18th on its list of the 25 Best TV Shows of 2015, took a more pragmatic view. Critic Andrew Gruttadaro acknowledged that Season 5 was “an up and down year for David Benioff and D.B. Weiss,” but also saying that the show “finished strong—and from what I can tell, after getting through those tough moments this year, the show is ready to charge to its end, and blow our minds to oblivion in the process.”
  • The A.V. Club ranked the show 23rd on its list of 40 shows (they went wide), saying that “Game Of Thrones’ fifth season may not have been its strongest…but even this show’s weakest season is still better than other shows’ best. Nothing else on TV can so artfully embrace the epic scope that Game Of Thrones deals with weekly.” Like a lot of other publications, it acknowledged that the show scored a coup with its final scene, since “Jon Snow’s fate was all anyone could talk about.” Love it or hate it, that moment certainly did get people talking.
  • Kevin Fallon of the Daily Beast zoomed in on that buzzworthy quality on his 15 Best TV Shows of 2015 list, on which Game of Thrones placed 9th. He called the show “one of the last remaining drops at the water cooler, and, with the exception of one or two broad strokes too many this past year, [it] doesn’t take that status lightly. More sweeping than ever, but also with more intensity in its still moments, no series is as thrilling or as puzzling—in the way that we have come to demand our shows to challenge us.”

Elsewhere, Zap2It collected the best TV lines of 2015, based on Variety critic Maureen Ryan’s annual Twitter solicitations. Quite a few Game of Thrones lines made it into the roundup (and no, “You want a good girl, but you need the bad pussy” was not one of them). They include:

Game of Thrones was rewarded in a slightly more traditional fashion with a nod from the American Film Institute (AFI), which puts together a list of outstanding television programs and movies every year. On this year’s listThrones shared the honor with the likes of Master of NoneMr. RobotBetter Call Saul, and Fargo.

Finally, Google has released the Year in Search 2015, a compilation of the most-searched terms across the world. When it came to TV shows, Game of Thrones placed high. It was the sixth most searched-for TV show for both people in the United States and in the world overall. (Interesting side note: Big Brother Brazil was the most search-for TV show worldwide. Take that, Game of Thrones.)

So the show had a busy 2015. We’ll be on the lookout to see if it pops up on anymore lists before the year is out.
