Callback and Easter Eggs for Episode 605 “The Door”

This week on our weekly Game of Thrones Easter Egg hunt, we sift through the ruins of “The Door” to find all the callbacks left behind in the wake of Hodor’s heroic final moments. As has been the norm this season, there was a plethora of callbacks to previous seasons, intentional or not, and as always, the internet was there to catalogue it all.

First, we have a reference all the way back to the series premeire: Sansa doing her own brand of needle work in Winterfell. Some never change.

Next, we have a note about the weirwood tree face Bran sees during his trip to the Dawn Age, when he saw the creation of the first White Walker. It looks strikingly similar to the Three-Eyed Raven’s face. Coincidence?

Here, we have some insight into the macabre patterns the White Walkers have been making since Season 1. They’ve often arranged the bodies of the dead in a circular fashion, and after Sunday night’s episode, we can trace that habit back to the place the very first White Walker was created.

Reddit user benjamintillius put this next one together. It shows Arya watching and actor playing her father get beheaded, from the same vantage point where she actually viewed her father get beheaded by Ilyn Payne back in Season 1.

Remember when Tyrion talked to Cersei about Ned Stark’s execution? “That bit of theater will haunt our family for a generation.” Did he know that would literally be true?

Speaking of Tyrion, his little crack to Varys about the identity of a hero who can maintain peace in Meereen (“Who said anything about him?”) was an in-story callback to when Varys said the same thing to him about Daenerys in “The Wars to Come.”

Finally and fittingly, Reddit user Quite_Operational found that the first words said to Hodor on Game of Thrones—uttered by Theon Greyjoy—were “Help Bran down the hall.” Ouch, it still stings.

That’s it for this week. Was there something we missed? Tells us about it in the comments or on social media.
