Now that the dust and blood has settled on Game of Thrones Season 6, we can begin to look back on what many are already calling the best season in the history of the series. Part of what made Season 6 so great was the resurgence of House Stark. Bran became the Three-Eyed Raven and saw Jon’s birth. Uncle Benjen finally returned as an amalgam of himself and book character Coldhands. Sansa grew into her role as the new Lady Stark, and Arya learned everything she needed from the Faceless Men and crossed another name off her list by killing old Walder Frey.
And last but not least, Jon Snow was brought back to life, killed the men who betrayed him, led an army to take back his ancestral home, and was named King in the North. Despite losing Rickon, Shaggydog, Summer, and Hodor, it was a great season for House Stark.
Speaking of Jon, many fans have taken to YouTube to pay homage to the White Wolf with pulse-pounding, heartfelt videos, set to rousing scores. First up, we have YouTuber TheGaroStudios with Jon Snow: King In The North:
This one already has over 1 million views. Jon’s a popular guy.
This is such a well put-together video. That ending is great: Jon is proclaimed King in the North, and we get the shot of the Night King, almost as if he’s saying, “Wait a minute, I’m the only king here.” But what really hits home are Catelyn’s lines at the end: “All this horror that’s come to my family, is all because I couldn’t love a motherless child.” Powerful stuff, that.
Next up, we have a video from YouTuber Zurik 23M. Check out Jon Snow: The White Wolf:
This video put’s Jon’s story on display. We see him leave Winterfell, fall in love with and tearfully say goodbye to Ygritte, become the Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, try to save the wildlings at Hardhome, get murdered, be reborn, and then become the King in the North.
I was struck by how Zurik 23M used Theon’s line from the pilot, about Jon being the runt of the litter, as well as Tyrion telling Jon to wear his bastardy like armor so it can’t be used to hurt him. Of course, the musical score ratchets the tension up a few notches. Audiomachine’s “Homecoming” really hit hard at the end of the video.
Finally, we have YouTuber Shahan Reviews, who contributes the most emotional video of the three: Brothers In The North:
We now know that Jon and Robb were actually cousins, but they were raised as brothers, and this video compares their respective rises to the position of King in the North. The musical score, “What Are You Going To Do When You’re Not Saving The World,” by Hans Zimmer, gives this video an emotional charge.
Robb was called the Young Wolf. Jon is now called the White Wolf. Robb’s legend grew with every battle—his enemies said he rode into battle on the back of a giant direwolf, while Jon’s skill with a sword reached even Ramsay Bolton’s ears. Both brothers made decisions very early to fight wars that were bigger than they were: Robb called his father’s banners, while Jon gathered allies from both sides of the Wall to fight the Boltons, and eventually the army of the dead.
It’s also interesting that both brothers committed beheadings that changed the course of their tenures as leaders: Robb beheaded Lord Karstark and lost the support of his house, while Jon beheaded Janos Slynt, earning the respect of Stannis and other men from the Night’s Watch. And when both brothers were proclaimed King in the North, they looked back at the current Lady of Winterfell: Robb at Catelyn and Jon at Sansa.
Both brothers were named King in the North by bannermen loyal to House Stark. Ironically, it was Lord Umber who crowed the loudest for Robb, while Jon had to fight the Greatjon’s son in the Battle of the Bastards. For Jon, 10-year-old Lyanna Mormont was his first supporter, and got the other lords in his corner.
These videos are great homages to the White Wolf and new King in the North, Jon Snow. Now, as to whether he’ll ever learn that he’s actually a Targaryen, we’ll just have to wait for Season 7, or for George R.R. Martin’s The Winds of Winter.
