New Info on Game of Thrones Season 7 Spanish Filming Locales

New information is emerging about the areas of filming in Malpartida de Caceres and Trujillo in Spain for Game of Thrones Season 7. Our Spanish counterparts, Los Siete Reinos, recently took a field trip out to the filming locations to see what the lay of the land was like. The pictures and information they brought back gave hints of what the locations could be used for.

The major area the took photographs of is that in Malpartida de Caceres, where their guides took them around the Los Barruecos area. This location, according to reports, has been booked for almost a month by the production, from mid November to mid December, and is assumed to be where next season’s major battle scene will be filmed. As LSR notes, when this information originally broke, everyone concentrated on beachy areas, and wondered if this was going to be a Normandy invasion type sea to land battle. But their info says that’s incorrect, and though the battle will be filmed near the shore, it won’t be a water/naval battle.

Apparently the above picture is of the battlefield, and, like the area of Saintfield where Battle of the Bastards filmed, is a private estate, the better to be able to keep prying eyes away from what they are doing. According to their info, this is the same battle that we’ve heard the casting call for the 100 horses for as well. There are shots includes of the shoreline as well, not because they have information those areas are going to be used, but as a reminder they are available if the production decides they need them.

They also have shots of paths that look like they could easily pass for high roads of Westeros. Their information says that HBo will be filming characters being carryied in fancy litters down these paths, but not who. We’ve seen the Lannisters travel that was around King’s landing, as well as Olenna. It’s hard to image Dany would submit to being carried in a box though.

Moving on to Trujillo, the major information is that the initial reports of a one day shoot there are incorrect. Their new information says that the production will film three full days there, around November 18th. That rules out the idea that it was just being used for a background shot to be CGI’d to the hilt, like the bridge of Córdoba was to create Volantis. As for what it is standing in for, LSR is not sure, but by process of elimination, they’re thinking this is the area that the major casting call for women extras  was for. That casting all suggested that the large groups of female extras were slaves, which says it’s an area of Essos, not Westeros. So even though most of our major characters are now back across the Narrow Sea, it seems we’re not quite done with Essos (or slavery) yet. Dany’s going to be *very* disappointed when she finds out.
