Conleth Hill is best known to Game of Thrones fans as the all seeing master of spies, Lord Varys. Outside of the show, Hill has had a long and successful run in theater. Continuing that run with a London production of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Hill took time to speak to Newsweek about all things Game of Thrones. On whether or not the show’s approaching end has sunk in for the veteran actor, Hill was effusive,
No, not yet. I’ve always been aware from day one how lucky I was, how special it was. I’m also really proud that it’s made [in Northern Ireland] and shows off the beauty of where I come from. Our tourism has gone up because of it. It will be a big loss when it goes, for lots of different reasons—and not just as selfish as my own. I haven’t contemplated it yet. We’ve got another season to go.
Predictably mum on whether or not we would get a Daenerys vs. Cersei faceoff in season 7 “I really couldn’t say”, Hill did touch upon the show’s tendency to cast all of its characters in a morally gray light, including the new queen of the Seven Kingdoms,
I don’t [think about it], to be honest. I think Cersei’s a bad article [Irish slang for a person] sometimes. But what’s brilliant about it is that they’re all human. You could argue that Cersei did what she did and blew up the Great Sept [in Season 6] because she was being abused by the High Sparrow and his people. It’s not as easy to be black-and-white about it. Look at how people thought about Jaime [Lannister] at the beginning versus now. It’s always changing—that’s what is so brilliant about the books and the series.
We don’t quite agree wutg Hill’s point, because after all, Cersei did blow up quite a few innocent people in addition to those pesky Sparrows. But we do understand what Hill is getting at. Hill also commented on his propensity (or lack thereof) for being recognized out and about by fans of Thrones,
I don’t really get recognized that much. I don’t look like Varys, really—I’ve got hair. I generally get left alone, really. But any fans that do approach are usually well-mannered and kind.
Except that one fan who tried to check if Hill was in fact, a eunuch. That was well-mannered. And it’s a bit ironic that the Hill’s lack of hair on Thrones, provides both his character, as well as Hill himself, the opportunity to blend in with crowds.
Game of Thrones season 7 debuts July 16th.
