The Ultimate Comprehensive Breakdown of the Game of Thrones Season 7 Trailer!

The Game of Thrones season 7 trailer finally arrived earlier today, reminding us all that the Great War is on its way (if not actually here). And like last year, as a friend of ours pointed out, Davos gets the best line!

Now, for the breakdown: we have a ton of juicy material to work with, so we’re going to get to it and dissect this beautiful trailer to bits. A picture is worth a thousand words, and we have several dozen images to play with- a Game of Thrones nerd’s dream! We’ll be digging into every quick bit that flashes through the trailer, using all our knowledge, so get ready for it: the ultimate breakdown!

First off, we have Cersei (Lena Headey) leading the way onscreen and in the voiceover! The reigning Queen of the Seven Kingdoms is justifiably paranoid:

Enemies to the east…enemies to the west…enemies to the south…enemies to the north. Whatever stands in our way, we will defeat it. We’re the last Lannisters, the last ones who count.

And where is Cersei? Heading into her brand spanking new map room, based on that bit of blue sea showing on the bottom left. In the very beginning, out of focus, you can see she’s meeting with a group of men clad in the Lannister red and black armor.

Next up, we have Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson), looking fine in his Unsullied armor. Representing “enemies of the east,” check. As we saw in earlier released photos, the Unsullied leader now sports a silver dragon sigil like the other members of Team Dany.

Grey Worm

The camera rolls over the map shown on Dragonstone’s Painted Table-this segment shows a bit of Rosby and Duskendale, two places near King’s Landing. (For the uninitiated, Google the “Defiance of Duskendale” and read about what a mistake it is to mess with Mad King Aerys and Tywin Lannister.) The main point we can take from this is the confirmation that someone is occupying Dragonstone once again, since Stannis and his family is deceased.

map

But Duskendale and Rosby are no threat. So is the owner of this ship the “enemy in the west”? Euron (Pilou Asbæk), perhaps? You can see a bit of the Greyjoy sigil when there’s lightning!

Ship

Another location on the Painted Table, the Vale of Arryn, is passed over as Cersei mentions “enemies to the south.” The Vale is to the north and east of King’s Landing, but it’s poetic license, I guess.

map2

More logically, just after she mentions the south, we spy someone sharpening the spear. A daughter of Dorne and Sunspear, perhaps? Obara Sand (Keisha Castle-Hughes) in particular favors the spear.

The map now display Castle Black and Eastwatch-by-the-Sea- two castles belonging to the Night’s Watch. The rest of the trailer will confirm who is assessing the major cities and castles using Dragonstone’s lovely and strategic Painted Table.

North

Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), traveling alone in Westerosi territory, is seen as Cersei mentions “enemies to the north.” Clearly Arya is managing just fine, looking clean and healthy, with a horse and a satchel.

Arya

This is the same location as the first one we saw Cersei in- a new map room. Here we see Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and Cersei standing on and examining a large floor map of Westeros, not quite finished. You can see the smaller maps being used to create it, and the ladder the artist is probably using to view the work as needed. Nice to see Cersei decorating the Red Keep instead of blowing up joints…and I suspect she might use her new map in a strategic fashion, similar to Dragonstone’s Painted Table.

Cersei finishes off her mini-speech in the voiceover onscreen here, looking calm and icy.

Cersei

Here we spy the Lannister soldiers in formation and on the move:

In the throne room, Cersei and Jaime watch someone presented before them. That looks like the Mountain off to the left, and the person in front of them- we think that just might be Euron Greyjoy with his new short haircut.

Throne room

Jaime is not pleased. If that is Euron meeting with them, I can’t imagine the two of them hitting it off.

Jaime

Queen Cersei is not amused. But her new dress is fabulous, and I think that’s what’s really important here.

Cersei Iron Throne

The next scene takes us to a new location, Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) on Dragonstone, getting a close view of dragons. If the child Tyrion could see himself now!

With Tyrion on Dragonstone, of course Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) is too! The Targaryen queen has returned to her ancestral home and birthplace. This will be an incredible emotional moment for Daenerys as she finally comes home after a lifetime of wandering and searching.

Daenerys Targaryen: I was born to rule the Seven Kingdoms. And I will.

Trailer

Nice to see the show putting extra work into Dragonstone now that they’re using the location more.

By the way, those are the famous stairs of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe on Dragonstone, there.

Dany2

Here we see Daenerys on her throne inside Dragonstone. The stone creating the seat reflects the distinct flysch rock found on the Basque beaches where Game of Thrones filmed for season 7. For a closer look at the unique throne, click here.

The next segment is incredibly exciting and satisfying, as the action kicks into high gear. Unsullied soldiers pour into what seems to be Casterly Rock (the Lannister family seat).

Casterly Rock

Grey Worm dives into the action at Casterly Rock. He’s masked but you can see his unique dragon pin on his uniform.

We swing up to the northern storyline to find the new king Jon Snow with Sansa, Brienne and his roomful of followers.

There’s someone with long reddish hair pulled back in the middle right- could it be Alys Karstark?

But don’t enjoy the coronation for too long- Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen) is up to his usual tricks, sowing discord between the Starks, as we see in this bit between Petyr and Sansa (Sophie Turner).

A gate of the Wall rises- who will be passing beneath? We’ve received major spoilers over the past year giving us a hint- click only if you want to be extremely spoiled for season 7.

Wall

A shaking Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen) faces a fiery battle.

theon

Melisandre (Carice van Houten), last seen being exiled from Winterfell, stands on Dragonstone, watching a group of people walk up the stairs. Spoiler pics from last October will tell you exactly who was walking up the stairs if you want to go that far!

It makes absolute sense that Melisandre would go to Dragonstone once she was sent away from Winterfell since Dragonstone is the only home in Westeros that she knows. The big question now is, will she offer her services to Daenerys?

Melisandre

Heading back up north, we find some terrified souls running for their lives, most likely beyond the Wall.

ice run

Meanwhile, Arya is unbothered, camping her way through Westeros. You can see the snow on the ground, showing that winter has settled into the area but isn’t too heavy yet.

For the life of me, I couldn’t get the screencap I needed for this scene, but that fellow we’ve circled, check them out at 1:05 in the trailer. You’ll see that they appear to be using a war hammer. If we’re correct, that would confirm that a character reported to be returning last fall is definitely one of the people in this circle beyond the Wall. These are most likely the same group of people seen up above, running for their lives.

Back to the Dothraki action- amazing stunts as the Dothraki screamers take on Lannister-armored men.

Dothraki Lannister

There’s a terrific explosion on the water here, and the coloring of the image is the same as in the Theon scene up above, suggesting that Theon is present for this battle.

Here we have the Onion Knight talking sense as usual.

Davos: If we don’t put aside our enmities, and band together we will die. And then it doesn’t matter whose skeleton sits on the Iron Throne.

Finally, the complete reveal: Daenerys and Tyrion viewing the Painted Table in Dragonstone, with all the sigil markers in place. Plotting their next move? It seems likely.

The Mountain (Hafthor Bjornsson) in his new black armor, displaying Cersei’s personal crown sigil.

This is a quick action shot, easier to spot in video- it seems to be a few men running up a gangplank to a ship.

Now this is satisfying, but also really intriguing: Jon choke-slamming Littlefinger in the crypts of Winterfell. But why are they in the crypts to begin with? Could Littlefinger know more about Jon’s parentage than he lets on?

Back to the action at Casterly Rock- the Lannisters look like they’re getting their asses handed to them, and I’m not mad at that.

Unsullied Lannisters

Unsullied vs Lannister

Arya Stark- but where? Looking under something, likely a bed. Hard to glean much from this, but she looks clean and not miserable, so I like it!

Arya head to the ground

Oh Jorah.  This horrifying greyscaled arm could only belong to Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen). His arm is protruding from a cell door, as though he’s in quarantine.

The Dothraki are going to town on Lannister soldiers with their arakhs. This is officially the season of killing Lannister men.

We’re back to panicked men running beyond the Wall, only we finally have some faces for you: it’s Jon (Kit Harington) and Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju). When you’re running in the far North on Game of Thrones, there’s usually only one thing behind you: the dead.

GREY WORM AND MISSANDEI DOING THE SEX YESSSSSSSSS

Grey Worm Missandei sex

Also Grey Worm has some sexy scratches so I think he was perhaps wounded in that Casterly Rock fighting. But Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel) is going to make it all better. (And before the comments section gets ridiculous-you don’t need a penis to have sex. Please be more creative than that.)

This next bit is a little puzzling. Yara Greyjoy (Gemma Whelan) and Ellaria Sand (Indira Varma) are making out. I have no idea why. Aesthetically, it’s not displeasing…but I don’t get it. It’s Ellaria so I’m assuming she’s trying to kill someone.

Ellaria yara

Back to the Painted Table, Tyrion has fun with his new toys, and knocks down the Lannister lion. Symbolism: not subtle, but it works.

table lion

We’ve got two people falling into the water here, but it’s not clear who. I’ve seen countless names bandied about, but I think you just can’t see, so for now it’s a mystery. But that does look like blazing red dragonfire around them so I’m assuming these two aren’t Team Dany.

water explosion

What’s a battle without a dragon? The Dothraki ride with Drogon at their back, in an incredible, spine-tingling shot.

dragon

Jon Snow caps it offs by warning, “The Great War is here.”

It is, and my whole body is ready for it after this trailer.
