The 2016 awards season is underway, and Game of Thrones Season 6 is already adding to its award pile. This past Monday night, TV Choice magazine (Britain’s self-proclaimed “biggest selling magazine) handed out the TV Choice awards. The outlet bestowed the Best International Show award on Game of Thrones.
The Best International Show category applies to shows of any genre. That means that Thrones beat out heavyweight like The Big Bang Theory and The Walking Dead. Michael McElhatton (Roose Bolton) accepted the award on Game of Thrones’ behalf. Does that make up for getting stabbed by his own son in the second episode of the year? You decide.

Think of the TV Choice Awards as a prelude the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards on September 16th. This year, Game of Thrones is nominated for a whopping 23 Emmys. If it manages a single win, it will have won more Emmys than any other drama in history, and will break the record for most awards won by a drama series. This gives it a nice running start.
Interestingly enough, TV Choice gave this same award to the show after its fourth season, but not to its fifth. At the Emmys, it was the reverse: the show didn’t win Best Drama after Season 4 (it lost to Breaking Bad), but won for Season 5. Hopefully, 2016 is the year both awards shows are on the same page.
