Game of Thrones continues its stellar awards season with a win at the Costume Designer’s Guild Awards. Held each year to honor excellence in costume design, the CDG Awards were held yesterday in Beverly Hills. Hosted by Mandy Moore, Game of Thrones was nominated in but one category: Excellence in a Fantasy TV Series, going up against television stalwarts like AMC’s The Walking Dead. But GoT walked away with the win. (See what I did there?)
Excellence in a Fantasy TV Series
- Game of Thrones–Michele Clapton, April Ferry (WINNER)
- The Man in the High Castle–J.R. Hawbaker
- Once Upon a Time–Eduardo Castro
- Sleepy Hollow–Mairi Chisholm
- The Walking Dead–Eulyn C. Womble
You’ll note that Thrones is the only nominee with two costume designers in the running. The show’s longtime costumer Michele Clapton departed the series after season 5, and veteran designer April Ferry (Jurassic World, Elysium) was brought in to replace her. However, the show brought Clapton back for episodes 9 and 10, “Battle of the Bastards” and “The Winds of Winter.” Hence, the two shared the award.
This was Thrones’ third consecutive year winning the award. It was nominated for seasons 1 through 3 as well, but lost each of those years. Nice to see the ship righted.
Clapton designed such notable outfits as Margaery Tyrell’s subdued gown for Loras’ trial, and Cersei’s dark gothic coronation gown. Clapton is set to return for season 7.
