Game of Thrones-themed video game mods bring Westeros to your desktop

Set as it is in a world inspired by medieval times, Game of Thrones dovetails nicely with the settings of a good number of fantasy video games, where things like horses and swords and armies and battles are commonplace. To that end, it’s not uncommon to see Game of Thrones-themed mods that bring certain video games more in line with the life and times of people in Westeros.

A couple of big ones have been making the rounds lately. First, YouTuber Kilian Experience downloaded a Game of Thrones mod for a medieval action role-playing game called Mount & Blade, and then made a video of himself playing it:

That game actually looks pretty interesting, with its focus on the small-scale economies of war, and I enjoyed Kilian’s commentary. If you aren’t aware, there’s actually a huge demand for videos of people playing video games and talking, and if they’re all as entertaining as that, I can see why. I kind of fear that, if I started watching them, I’d only stop several days later having completely lost track of time, so let’s move on.

This next mod looks more elaborate. Made for Creative Assembly’s Total War series, the Seven Kingdoms: Total War mod lets fans play out several custom battles modeled off fights from Game of Thrones. Looking at the video below, it looks like a straight-up GoT video game, right down the sigils on the shields.

Per Eurogamer, “Seven Kingdoms: Total War already boasts 20 separate armies across eight Westeros factions, with 35 different generals to pick from,” and there could be more on the way. Looking at the video above, I even see faces that look like they were modeled after characters like Mance Rayder and Tormund Giantsbane, but that could just be coincidence.

And for those uninterested in mods, there are actual Game of Thrones video games out there, including an excellent series of adventure games from Telltale.
