During Robert Baratheon’s Rebellion, Jaime Lannister killed the Mad King Aerys Targaryen for trying to blow up King’s Landing. That decision has defined him ever since. Last week, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who plays Jaime on Game of Thrones, talked to Harper’s Bazaar about a popular fan theory: the idea that Jaime may now turn his sword on his twin sister Queen Cersei, who actually blew up several blocks of King’s Landing in the season 6 finale. “I heard that theory, and it absolutely makes sense,” he said. “I always thought maybe it’s too neat, but who knows.”
Coster-Waldau didn’t actually say whether the theory will come to pass, of course, but his hint was enough to get fans talking. Mashable, ever curious, followed up with Coster-Waldau and dug even more quotes out of him.
I mean I don’t think he — I’m just saying it’s a valid theory. I can see it makes sense, it has a beautiful — it’s a nice circle [that] they are born together in the womb and then he kills her at the end…It makes sense.
It would have a nice ironic ring to it…Just picture it: Jaime approaching the throne in silhouette and drawing his sword as Cersei, who was just about to order Qyburn to explode the rest of the city, slowly realizes that he’s no longer on his side. It’s the kind of thing that calls out to writers.
But would Jaime go that far? Coster-Waldau isn’t sure.
You could say that could — that the motivation for doing that would be the same for killing Cersei, but I haven’t seen anything yet before Season 7 that would make me believe that he was capable of doing that,” he added.
Yeah, but what about during or after season 7? “I don’t know. Well, I do, but you’ll have to watch the show.”
