David Benioff’s wife, Amanda Peet, is an actress and was once upon a time, more famous than her writer husband, before he got involved in Game of Thrones. She currently has her own series she’s starring in, the low rated but critically acclaimed Togetherness. Though she has never been on Thrones, and at first even admitted she thought the concept was silly and wanted nothing to do with this BBC/HBO boondoggle she thought her husband was getting into, nowadays she cannot make an appearance without being asked questions about her husband’s hit show. Let’s call it divine retribution.
Appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to promote Togetherness (the second season returned to HBO this past Sunday), she once again had to play the good sport on the subject. (She had a cold, so she was just being a good sport showing up at all.) Upon being asked if she would like to be on the show, she insisted of course she would.
This isn’t actually the first time she’s said that now that the show is a hit–though it should be noted that Benioff looked a bit ill at the idea. Perhaps having your own wife treated the way women are on Game of Thrones suddenly makes it seem less appealing? Ofr her part, Peet would like to be a swordswoman, like Brienne. perhaps she thinks being able to defend herself is the best way to survive in Westeros. Who is she kidding? As she and Stephen Colbert both agree, there is no surviving in Westeros.
For the record, I didn’t realize until this interview that Colbert is one of that elite group of uber-nerds who is waiting for Martin to finish writing the A Song of Ice and Fire books so he can read them all before he watches the TV show. I had wondered why the King of All Things Nerdy on Late Night, who is known for his encyclopedic knowledge on Star Wars, Star Trek and Lord of the Ring had ceded the subject of Game of Thrones to Kimmel and Conan. The more you know!
