Last week, we asked you all what you most wanted out of the first scene of Game of Thrones Season 6. In retrospect, the answer was obvious:
Of course people are most interested in seeing what happens to Jon Snow. Questions about his fate have dominated fan chatter since the end of Season 5, and viewers only seem more interested now that we’re a couple months away from the Season 6 premiere. Many commenters seem to think that there’s almost no other way the show could start—after leaving us with a monster cliffhanger at the end of Season 5 (the first time the show has left us in that big of a lurch, if you think about it), it feels like they owe us some kind of follow-up; just SOMETHING to acknowledge how much hand-wringing has gone on in the off-season.
Still, while I think there’s a solid chance that Season 6 will begin at Castle Black, I think it’s too much to hope that the show will jump immediately into Jon’s much-rumored resurrection. Commenter Gaia puts it nicely:
I think those holding out for a straight in Jon resurrection / Jon parentage solution will be disappointed. HBO will, I imagine, want to milk it a lil bit longer…Could be wrong ofc. Personally I’d like to experience it ‘warmed up’ rather than straight in cold from a 10 month series / 6 year book wait.
The notion that the season will open with Bran is another popular option. Commenter King Crow figures that the viewing public will need reminding about who Bran is after he sat last season out, while Inga Baranauskienė figures that the producers could hit two birds with one stone. “I think the two are going to be combined: we will see Jon through Bran’s vision.” That’s a clever idea, and the producers may have to think along those lines if they want to cram all the storylines they have into a ten-episode space.
And now, a survey of opening scenes that will never happen in a million years, but which would make for interesting TV.
Dan: “The morning after the red wedding …..flashback …brotherhood without banners coming across Cat’s body near the riverside.”
Tony: “Melisandre walking over to Jon Snow dead in the snow and simply stating, ‘I got this.'”
“How about a musical number with Roose and Ramsay in Winterfell, dancing and singing about the joy of flaying men and raping women. This would be quite powerful and unexpected, then Brienne comes in and just kills them.”
Sometimes a show will have the odd musical episode, but somehow I don’t think Game of Thrones will be one of them. We’ll find out for sure in April.
