It’s hard to believe that on a show where someone loses at least a limb, if not a life, on just about every episode, there was a scene that was so violent it was left on the cutting room floor. But according to Trusted Reviews, which got the story from cast member Ben Crompton (Dolorous Edd), it happened.
The scene in question was an extended version of the sequence from Season 4’s “The Mountain and the Viper” where Gregor Clegane squeezes Oberyn Martell’s head til it pops. Now, if you’re thinking that scene was already violent enough, just wait until you read what Crompton had to say about what was originally filmed:
I went in one session and they were flicking through stuff and they showed the Red Viper Mountain fight and they showed an edit where he puts the fingers in and he just pulls his face apart, but instead of cutting like it does in the show he just pulls his face apart and I just said “Oh my god they are never going to be able to show that on telly” and they didn’t but the effects were brilliant.
I didn’t think that scene could get worse, but that would have made it worse. I can’t even fathom Clegane just ripping Oberyn’s head apart.
In other news, Game of Thrones producer and writer Bryan Cogman will be live-tweeting his top 10 favorite Game of Thrones episodes over the next month. He started with Season 1’s “Fire and Blood,” and has dropped some pretty interesting quotes.
With this ep, the goal was to make the audience feel the way we felt when we first read @GRRMspeaking‘s glorious novel. #FireandBlood

He’s right on the money here. When Dany emerged from the fire with her newborn dragons draped around her naked and unburnt body, I felt as if I were actually seeing the pages of the novel come to life.
This LF/Varys rivalry was born from the group of scenes we wrote late in production. Some episodes were running short, so we needed to

If not but for David and Dan’s economy of phrasing, we may never have gotten those great Littlefinger/Varys scenes.
Ah, the LF/Varys scenes! Some of my favorite days on set. #FireandBlood

I truly believe if Emilia/Jason weren’t great together we wouldn’t be talking about Season 6. Without Dany’s arc working, S1 doesn’t work.

I’ve never really thought of it that way, but he’s right. If Emilia Clarke didn’t sync up with Jason Momoa in Season 1, then fans could have lost interest really quickly, and there goes over half of Game of Thrones. You can tune into Cogman’s Twitter feed for more insight as he counts down through more episodes. A few more tweets:
This scene with Michelle and Rich mourning Ned is one of my faves. The day we shot this we knew we were going to expand Robb's role in S2.

Pretty sure Dan Weiss wrote all of Marillion's songs. His song about the Imp in 105 was even longer in the original script and very funny.

This Sansa/Joff 'mounted heads' scene was @SophieT's audition scene. And a star was born. #FireandBlood

I was scared shitless of Charles Dance. My "friend" Alan Taylor made ME give him a line note the first day I met him (this scene w/ Peter)

Finally, we have some sad news…well, sad depending on how you look at it. According to Newsweek, Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin may never make a cameo appearance on the show. Martin was asked about a potential Thrones cameo on his Not a Blog and had this to say:
As for a cameo… after Z NATION and SHARKNADO 3 I may be done with cameos.
Can we take this as a sign that the Bearded Bard is hunkering down and trying his best to finish the A Song of Ice and Fire series, or is a man just suffering from a case of wishful thinking?
Notably, in the unaired pilot episode of Game of Thrones, Martin did make a cameo appearance as a Pentoshi nobleman in the background of Dany’s wedding, and he wore a gigantic hat. He didn’t appear in the official pilot, though.
