Filming in Spain begins, main characters collide & a forgotten character returns

These last few weeks, the Game of Thrones crew has worked hard to put the final touches on the new locations in the rockiest shorelines of the Basque Country, and just yesterday the cast appeared on set. All of this was merely the preparation for what was to come, and it has finally happened. Filming has begun in Spain, particularly in Barrika on Muriola Beach, in the Basque Country. Despite the tight security measures, plenty of curious onlookers have managed to sneak a peek at what was being filmed. It should go without saying, but there are major spoilers ahead. Just as Benioff and Weiss promised, characters that have never met before collide for the first time ever. Moreover, a character we have not seen for a long time returns to the fold.

As keen followers of recent spoilers might have surmised by now, there will be a major North-meets-South encounter in more than one of the Spanish locations. Our speculative minds can rest for a bit, however, as we now have a pretty clear view of what this first encounter may look like. The video shared by Basque newspaper EL CORREO shows us beyond a shadow of a doubt an encounter between Tyrion Lannister and Davos Seaworth on what very much looks like the shores of Dragonstone.

As you can see, in this beach scene next to a small boat we can see Tyrion dressed in black, following his queen’s lead from last season’s finale, and Davos, dressed exactly as we have seen him dress for the last five years, working hard on preparing the boat either for disembarking or embarking, while he has a conversation with Daenerys’ new Hand.

This meeting holds a particular interest for those of us who are invested in the inner lives of these characters. The political reasons for this meetup will surely breed hundreds of new theories, yet we should also pay attention to the shared history of Tyrion and Davos, however tenuous. The characters may have never met in the show, but Tyrion was responsible for the defense of King’s Landing during Stannis’ attack, and his wildfire trick resulted in Davos witnessing how his son Matthos disintegrated just before his eyes. Considering they have —as of very recently— fought in opposite sides of a war, it is worth wondering how well they will be able to work together, if that is indeed their aim as counselors for their respective leaders, King Jon and Queen Daenerys.

Now, if a meeting of two major characters such as these were not considered momentous enough, we have another piece of information from today’s filming that may blow your minds… and put an end to a tiresome meme, as well. Unfortunately, this one is not yet accompanied by any visual evidence of any kind, but Los Siete Reinos claims they have it in good authority that none other than Joe Dempsie was spotted on set. You read that right: Gendry is back in the story after a three season absence, and surprisingly he will return to the place we saw him last: Dragonstone. We already had some compelling evidence that Dempsie would return this coming season, but seeing him here is certainly a bit of a shock. What are the possible circumstances of Gendry ending up in Dragonstone again, after keeping on rowing for so many years? Did he circumnavigate the Earth in his little boat, and ended up where he started? I haven’t the slightest. And isn’t that part of the fun?
